SALISBURY FIRE DEPARTMENT TO GO ON RECONNAISSANCE MISSION IN NORTH PRONG
Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr., announces that the Salisbury Fire Department will be operating a reconnaissance dive mission in the North Prong of the Wicomico River, at the City of Salisbury Public Works location at 404 W. Isabella Street, on Monday, October 5, 2009, at 12:30pm. The purpose of this dive operation is to locate and identify a partially submerged barge which is impeding the waterways.
The Salisbury Fire Department Special Operations Team, Marine Division, will be diving to look for the markings on the barge in an effort to determine the owner so arrangements can be made to have the abandoned vessel removed immediately and safely. They will also ascertain if there are any environmental hazards associated with the barge.
This dive event is a partnership between the Salisbury Fire Department, the City of Salisbury Public Works Department, and the Neighborhood Services & Code Compliance Department.
"Our commitment to the Wicomico River takes another step next Monday,” said Mayor Ireton. “The combined efforts of the Salisbury Fire Department, Salisbury Public Works, and Neighborhood Services to determine the exact location of the barge, the possible environmental impact of its location, and determining options for its removal are our goals. I am proud of the commitment of all our employees in the goal of cleaning up the Wicomico River."
The media and the public are invited to attend the dive operation. For more information, contact the Salisbury Fire Department’s Public Information Officer at 410-548-3120 extension 111.

Wouldnt fixing the w.w.t.p. help the river more?
I'm glad they are doing the clean up but they need to do better than the Salisbury Navy with crab nets. If they are really interested the trash skimmer the city sold has re-emerged and is at the boat ramp on Riverside Drive and is owned by Atlantic Marine now. It can be operated by one person. It may be cheaper to run it than paying 4 city employees to putz around the river in a pontoon boat.
i bet it is dolby's
It states in the Slime that they are unsure whether there are hazardous materials on board. Why wasn't this mission scheduled sooner given that question?
Hope they have their turd-proof wet suits on!
Uh, it's partially submerged. Partially. That means you can see part of it. Tell you what. I drive by it every day. I can identify it for you. Yup, it's a barge.
Just another mess from the Barrie daze to clean up, yup.
Yeah, that's it, Mayor Ireton. You want so bad to name something after her. Name that barge after her.
They are just practicing so that they can find the $900,000 fire boat they are requesting when it sinks after a late night beer cruise...er training session.
No need to recon to locate the barge. It is partly submerged at the head of the river by Isabella st. You can see it driving by, behind the place that cuts grave stones. That is where a company was cutting barges up for scrap metal. Does the city really believe the divers can see through all the poop in the water? Do barges have markings on them?
Is it safe for people to be in that nasty river?

American Stimulus Money being used to stimulate the Canadian Economy. Only in American. Only with Obama.
They know who it belongs to. If they don't they must have been blind for atleast ten years. Just pull it up and send Charlie a bill.
the barge was being scrapped by a salvage company from Bear. DE. they left it after Arial crane tried to lift it and they couldn't. there is no environmental impact to the river except iron. I saw the barge before it sank and went on it. The only thing on this barge was about 18" of mud in the bottom. The dive will be for nothing. The barge does not have any markings on it.
It would have been done sooner but the fire dept was out fishing on your dime. Sorry for the delay.
I ahve not laughed so hard all week thanks Joe.
Everytime i hear of these guys doing snything I just laugh. My family have been paid Fire Fighters in Baltimore and Phila. for three generations.
This bunch of hose beaters is an embarassment to the job. I hold the Mayor and Council at fault.
Clean the river shit, clean out the SFD. Hire someone who can be held accountable
