I think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion - just like showing the inauguration to students. Would people be so upset if this was Reagan or Kennedy addressing the students? Some people will complain about anything!

I dont remember the people having this right when george bush was in office.
Is this racist or what is it .
Obama is the president of the united states and the children should have the right to hear the president.
The parents should not have the right to keep there children from hearing the presidents speech due to there parents political views.'
as they said it is educational and if you dont want your children in public schools you should pay yourself for private school , i pay taxes and if you dont like the real world go pay for your richass kids education somewhere else. These are public schools and they should see the world as it is , not as you richass parents want to paint it.

I find it sad that "we" as the parental public must sign a permission slip to allow our children to listen to the President of the United States. I myself am not a fan of this President, but feel strong that we as priviledged Americans should be aware of his speeches. No permission slip should be signed it should be a privilege to hear.

My child has never been required to watch a President give a speech. So for 9:44 a.m., the schools did not show a speech given by President Bush or any other President. Racial? This is not us, it must be your way of thinking, because I have to sign a permission slip as to whether my child is to watch it or not. If my child watches the speech all is well? If not, my child will be one of those kids that the parents' political views are being enforced being they are richa** kids? Get real, why do the kids have to watch President Obama when they have not had to watch a President's speech before now? And we are definitely not rich, so don't want this political Sh** shoved down my child's throat when they are supposed to hear and grow and eventually make up their own opinions, not what the Liberals want us to teach and show our kids in school.

I have just as much RIGHT not to have my children indoctrinated by and with the most hypocritical, lying a$$ Hitler want a be, ever to be elected as President of this Country. NO other person has tried so hard to destroy our Constitution as much as this current congress and Pres {I dont give a rats a$$ what color you paint them!!} Keep treading on my rights, I'll give you racist....like white on rice!

I think it shows the level of distrust of politicians among americans in general.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with a generalized 'stay in school, work hard' speech from any president BUT Obama's own radical agenda should make people start to question things. And I think they are.

All politicians should look at this and the tea party protests and start re-thinking their positions on big government and capitilism.

Anonymous said...

Why is it a privilege? He can't give a speech without a teleprompter. At least when President Bush talked, stuttered and stammered, he talked from his heart. This current president, Uh, Oh, UGH, UGH. But it will be a terrific speech because, there will NOT be another teleprompter failure. Oh, to be in power and make sure the teleprompters are in working order.

Anonymous said...

Is no one ever happy? People threw a fit when they discovered that schools planned on showing the Inaugural address. hat was racist then because people claimed it had not been shown when Bush was sworn in. The BOE is just trying to prevent the same response as last time. Geez people, get over it!

A "privilege" to hear a communist and/or socialist try to indoctrinate?

I don't care who he is, elected or not, I don't want me or my children to hear anything he says.

He is trying to change this country from one of Capitalist design to that of one more socialist.

All of you idiots that don't know or see what's coming should be ashamed of yourselves.

I am buying ammo, guns and gold.

Keep watching the dollar you fools.

What a joke. These concservatives will stop at nothing to destroy freedoms in our country. This is purely race and hate driven. The conservative agenda was soundly defeated during the election and now they will stop at nothing to short circuit what most, judgning by the past election, want. Perhaps if they spent there time listening to what the citizens of this country wnat and not ENTERTAINERS like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O Reilly they would finally, FINALLY get it. Bullocks.

So, you are all advocating censorship now? You are the ones taking rights away. How very ironic and you aren't even aware of it as you allow the likes of idiots like Beck, Hannity, and Rush use you for their own corporate financial gain. Because that is exactly what is behind their outrage - money and ratings. As long as they can keep you fired up they can keep sponsor dollars coming in and you don't even see it. You are being used big time!

You people are ridiculous. How nutty have we become if you need a permission slip to hear an 18 minute speech by the president? Are you worrried that he is going to hypnotize your kids? Get a grip, nut jobs.

Anonymous said...

You young libs better open your eyes and read your history. "Your" president and congress are taking away your freedoms. You can not find unbiased information in the mainstream media, the obama-machine has taken care of that. Do some research, on the government websites after you look up the definition of capitalism, socialism and communism in your Webster's dictionary. Research in your encyclopedias what happened in the past. These resources have not yet been biased. Then, THINK FOR YOURSELF about what you have read. Not what you are hearing pumped out of the media propaganda machine.

Hypnotize, No Way!! Shove the Liberal viewpoints down one's throat, of course.

As to Hannity, Rush and O'Reilly, one can turn off the radio or television. As to showing an 18 minute speech from Obama, no turning off. Of course it is not mandatory today, but what it is a lesson plan that has not been expected of past Presidents.

I don't know if my child should be a spectator or not. And I use this word, because Obama has found another way of having a platform and not be responsible. I want my children to grow and make up their own minds, not be taught in school that if you don't agree with the current president and his administration and their ideas that you will be called a racist.

So many small minded people just to push their own agenda.

10:53 - please list the freedoms that you think the president and congress have taken away since January 20. I am well aware of the definitions of capitalism, socialism, and communism - so I wonder if you are planning to use Social Security when you retire? What about medicare? Both would be considered socialist under the definition - perhaps we should get rid of them now? You can be the one to tell all the retirees. I suggest you take your own advice and THINK FOR YOURELF and turn off Rush, Hannity, and Beck - you might want to be a little more discriminating about what you read on this sight as well.

I dont like Obama, did not vote for Obama and dont feel as though young children should be subjected to his lame and liberal speeches. He has not done one thing good for our country since January 2009.
And besides, school is where you go to learn and be taught -His inauguration was already shoved down the students throats. I never recall having twice in one year to listen to a President in a classroom ever!

As said , you parents are taking away the rights not the president.

What you say is common sense. It is mind numbing that any one of us, much less thousands of us, feel somehow distubed or scared at the thought of our President speaking to our children. We feel the undescribable need to protect our children - but from what?
We cannot verbalize our concerns without appearing to be nut jobs. We realize how ridiculous we sound - trust me, we do understand. Yet we find ourselves at the unlikely position of fearing our own government. Never in our lives did we think this would happen. It happened quite gradually so that we never noticed it. But one thing we know, it is real. We fear our government.
Does this make sense?

It's stupid to say "if you don't like what the President has to say, move". I am not the one who voted for him. He may be President (because people are pathetic), but that does not mean I support a thing he stands for. His "change" will be the downfall of the US, and I can not wait until the next election, and his sorry butt is voted out.

My three children will be taken out of school tomorrow during this ridiculous televised "show". They may as well show some cult leader trying to sway innocent children over to the dark side.

Good for them allowing parents the right to judge what is good for their own children.

Compare that to Broward County Schools in Florida where the Superintendent of Schools says, "providing for a separation from this Address does not align with our practices and responsibility to provide a well rounded, quality education for all students." And I'll add, " . . . parents' choices for their kids be damned!"

Later he says(*) that schools can "record or obtain a copy of the Address for later educational use, . . . such as tests"

That sounds to me that if a parent opts their child out of viewing it, that eventually he or she will either have to view it, or be penalized with a failing test score if they continue to opt out.

Yet another reason to homeschool.

You make many assumptions. All incorrect. I do not listen or watch any of those that you list. I actually don't even know where they broadcast from..tv radio??? No idea. I am not in anyway wishing censorship on anyone. What I am saying is that if you or anyone else thinks that the right wing heavy talk radio media is out for anything but themselves think again. You seem to be advocating censorship by not allowing the President of the United Statees to speak. I do believe he has much more to say thats a Rush Limbaugh ever has. If you don't like what the President has to say, dont listen. If you don't want your kids to listen, don't send them to school that day. To insinuate that the President is a cul;t leader that is going to take our children transends all borders of rational thought. If you do not agree, can't help you.

Anonymous said...

It's not like the left isn't always trying to get at other peoples children. My kids my decision period .If you choose to believe this administration is on the up and up have some more kool-aid.

Anonymous said...

For all of you saying that this smacks of censorship - how does not allowing a child to watch the president give a speech rise to that level? Is he still giving the speech? Yes. Is it still being broadcast? Yes.

For all of you who have no problem with showing an 18 minute speech in the school, ask yourself - with the all the problems in our schools, do I really need to show a political speech during math class? If I am of the mindset that this is something that my child needs to see, I can TiVo it, or tape it, or transcribe it, or have the news on at dinnertime (since they will be replaying it, ad nauseum).

Anonymous said...

11:59 AM,

Not sure where you went to school, but I count 9 writing errors in your short post.

As far as "conservativism [sic] has been in effect for the last 8 years" goes, you are highly mistaken. First, for a majority of that time we had a Democrat congress. They spend the money, not the president. Second, in many ways of fiscal responsibility JFK was more conservative than GW. I voted for Bush both times only because he was the lesser of two evils, but had a real conservative been on my ballot then Bush would have never seen my vote.

"[conservatism] has been in effect for the last 8 years" -- Not even close.

Anonymous said...

If there was an intelligence test before people could have kids, none of this would be an issue. You people need to quit freaking out, unless your hold on reality is so slim that you really do think an 18 minute speech by the president is going to destroy your precious little angels. I really hate to think what you talk about over dinner at your houses. Nothing but Glen Beck paranoia would be my guess.

Anonymous said...

Dubya was not conservative. The Republican Party base has not been represented for many many years now.

Most Liberals do not want communism either! Yet that is exactly what they are getting.

Both parties are controlled by the money elite. Wake up and smell the facism.

Anonymous said...

The text of the president's speech is available right now on Whitehouse.gov I urge you to read it and then tell me what exactly you are afraid of? Perhaps you are just afraid your children will like the president? Surely you can't be afraid that they would take his advice and work hard.

Anonymous said...

Hey nutters, you can read the text of Obama's speech online right now. Maybe then you'll feel stupid for feaking out--there is NOTHING wrong with this speech!!

Anonymous said...

All you parents who are keeping your kids home from school--what explanation are you giving your kids for this? You don't want your kids to have an open mind or listen to a speech by the president(OH, the horror), so your kids will probably figure out how paranoid and close minded you are. That's a recipe for rebellion.

My daughter will be in private school tomorrow learning what we pay for her to learn, not listening to the propaganda b.s. Obama will offer. He is very transparent targeting children during the daytime when they are in school - of course the liberal teachers in our public schools are all for allowing this. He's bankrupting our country, trying to steal our freedoms one by one, trying to control our every move - just a few reasons why we don't respect the man in my household.

Anonymous said...

my child will definatly not be involved in this.

I would like some of you Liberals to chew on something for a few minutes. Schoolchildren were made to watch the Inauguration. There was no choice. At least there is a choice this time. Now, children are being placed in a position to watch this speech or be labled racist. What a choice. Never in my 12 years of public schoolin was I EVER made to watch a political speech by a sitting president. At no time was a speech on education by Reagan, Bush I or Clinton part of my education. I managed to stay in school, get a diploma, go to college, and get both a BA and a MA. I grew up to think for myself and, with the guidance of my parents, make my own political choices. If it were my child, I would use the speech as a teachable moment, and talk with my child both before and after the speech, and look at the text online. My child should be exposed to different political beliefs, even those I don't agree with, and I would make sure that I let my child know that while the President's intentions are good, there are parts of his speech that don't mesh with our ideas of a successful America.

For those who were likely educated in public schools and didn't learn what censorship is (10:34 I'm looking at you) censorship is when the GOVERNMENT silences individual civilians, NOT the other way around.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. — The first article of the Bill of Rights

Melanie said...

Just as I expoected--the nutters still want to keep their kids out rather than listen to what turns out to be a very positive speech. Read it and please point out where it will damage your children. I canot wait to see what you come up with! Oh, that's right--you would have to take the time to READ it rather than just freak out needlessly. I guess that is too much to expect.

Anonymous said...

For all those planning to keep your kids home from school, please do. Missing one day of school is not going to hurt them. With ignorant parents like you they never had a chance anyway.

Anonymous said...

@2:30 - YOU read the speech and tell me how that helps children learn to derive? Or help children understand the processes learned in climatology? Or maybe how to find the root of the term "expatiate"?

Or maybe you'd rather just rail about how we're racist or "nutters" for wanting our children to learn in school, as opposed to listening to King Teleprompter?

2:39,

I am sorry about that but Reagan and Bush I did the exact same thing.

You can actually look that one up yourself. Did people complain then? No it was fine then.

It is not the speech that people object to as much as the memorandum from the Dept of education. Obamas speech on its face does not seem to be a problem. But when his dept of ed. puts ou statements like discuss how you can support Obama there is a problem. Obama is too slick to put anything like that in his speech, so he has others do that for him. He is a very deceitful and dangerous man. Remember he said to judge him by the people around him. I think with people around him like the now resigned Van Jone, a man who talked about forced sterilization the like, people are beginnig to do as he asked and judge him by the nuts he appointed as his czars.
And you people that love the term racist so much, what term would you have used if Hillary would have won, because the criticism would have been worse for her.

Anonymous said...

Where are the follow up questions and suggestions given to the students after his speech?I haven't found them posted.

Anonymous said...

@3:29 - you'll want to find the lesson plans that Reagan and Bush sent out to make the comparison...I'll wait...

Right Coast - not too surprising that such a narrow mind would only know one way to define censorship. Perhaps a dictionary would help you there? Might try looking in one.

* Main Entry:censor
* Function: transitive verb
* Inflected Form(s): cen·sored; cen·sor·ing \ˈsen(t)-sÉ™-riÅ‹, ˈsen(t)s-riÅ‹\
* Date: 1882

: to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable (censor the news); also : to suppress or delete as objectionable (censor out indecent passages)

* Main Entry: cen·sor·ship
* Pronunciation: \ˈsen(t)-sər-ˌship\
* Function: noun
* Date: circa 1591

1 a : the institution, system, or practice of censoring b : the actions or practices of censors; especially : censorial control exercised repressively

Show the 6 minute Thomas Paine speech (scroll down several posts)
now on YouTube!!!!!
That is more motivating for students to be successful than Obama's 18 minutes.

Or schools could follow the Pres with Paine's speech.

Anyway, a wonderful resource for civics and social study classes.

@4:23 - thank you for providing an example of not understanding how to use a dictionary.

You posted the definition of censor, but ignored the primary definition censorship: the institution, system, or practice. None of those fit what she was discussing. I get that you can't read for context, but try to find a literate person to do so for you, please.

Funny that Pemberton didn't bother to send the form home. I believe some parents got calls on the automated system, I did not. Will my child be watching? No, indeed she will NOT. Will that condemn her to a life in the drive thru? Indeed NOT.

What a shame that the extreme left communists have to resort to blindly ignorant insults, most of which seem to have been directed at children. I suppose that's what happens when you have no real facts or honest figures to back up your extremist views.

The really sad thing? Even the lefty nuts will suffer before long, and they'll have only themselves to blame. You keep drinking that Kool Aid and waiting for the big hand out you think is coming...that's right, go ahead.

My child will continue on with her education (and I do mean EDUCATION, not watered down, dumbed down, feel good edumacashun) and we'll see who fares best in the end, shall we?

Back to regularly scheduled programming...continue to bicker and sling mud in your very best misspelled manner, atrocious grammar and all.

My child goes to Delmar and we got the permission letter. I'm glad they gave out the letter and not just showed this crap w/o asking parents. The REAL point to this is that it IS NOT THE PRESIDENTS JOB!!!! Let the teachers educate, let the parents be responsible for following up and be involved in their child's schooling. The economy is in the pot and he's wasting time talking to our kids, what a joke and waste of time. If we had a re-election right now I would win over this clown. I'd feel this way about any president, past or future. It's simple, do your job and I'll do mine as a parent. The fact that people are ok with this shows just how far we as Americans have fallen.

Anonymous said...

Parents have a right to instill their own values and beliefs on a child. Originally, correct me if I am wrong, there was also a part where Obama was asking the students to write an essay on how they could help him. The white house has since decided not to do the other activities besides the speech, which does sound harmless enough. But the point is that there are people who totally disagree with the decisions and direction that obama is going. These parents should have a right for their child to not listen to a speech by someone whose philosophical ideas are inherently different than theres. I personally think we are at a pivotal point in this country, not just because Rush said so, but because of what I see. I think we are on the verge of socialism. That is my opinion, I do not agree with socialism, and do not want my child to watch a speech from someone who will make history in a bad way. (in my opinion)
