Council Majority vs Mayor and Citizens of Salisbury

Those who would continue to keep this city in turmoil demand to know Mayor Ireton's schedule when school reopens. Had these instigating obstructionists been paying attention they would know the mayor negotiated a part time position with the WCBOE. He was elected to fill a part time position as mayor. Unlike the former leader of the Reich, this mayor has to work for a living. Everyone casting their votes knew this in advance. I believe Mr. Ireton said he would be teaching in the mornings and be available in the GOB until late in the evening, long after city employees had gone home.

What's the problem? Barrie Tilghman spent her days at the gym, playing bridge down at High Banks, shopping at Kuhns, scheming to cover up the fiasco at the WWTP, manipulating to acquire the bog that the fire palace is built on, twisting and turning to cover up the fact that Mike Dunn and his father owned the property now known as Sassafras Meadows, let us not forget the controversial pipestem annexation, and this was during her last term as mayor. The underhanded deeds from her first days in office are too long to list. She was not in the GOB 5 days a week, 8-10 hours per day, during her 12 year reign of terror, EVER.

During his campaign, Mayor Ireton and his campaign staff knew nothing would change if the District 1 seat didn't change. So, we got what we have, all for 1 vote. Everyone in this city knew he would be fighting an uphill battle every day, with every decision. The council majority are not, I repeat, ARE NOT, team players. The only team they play for is the team of Barrie Tilghman and special interest groups.

Mayor Ireton and the city are stuck with Barrie Tilghman's budget. Although Louise Smith is listed as council president, it is without a doubt Gary Comegys is running that sideshow. Comegys is still smarting from his loss of the mayor's seat, and what a loss it was, don't expect him to work with the mayor on anything. Louise Smith has her marching orders, continue to lie to the public, as she has since she started knocking on doors during her campaign, and vote with Gary Comegys. Same old Louise. Shanie Shields, admits she has done absolutely nothing since 2005 until Mayor Ireton vetoed the donation of the Lake Street property. Why would she stand out for something that would in no way, shape or form benefit her constituents in District 1? She stood out because Gary Comegys told her to, that's why.

The council majority is destroying this city. They knew Mayor Ireton did not and would not support their action to accept a "donation" of the Lake St. property. Mayor Ireton made them aware of his position in advance of the meeting. His veto is no surprise to them, and should not have been a surprise to anyone, no matter how they spin it. Remember, all three of these people are Tilghman puppets. Comegys and Smith have been caught in enough lies to bury them. Shields has made enough stupid statements to keep everyone laughing, she has not offered an original thought since her first day on council. The only thing Shanie has to offer the council majority and their special interest groups, is the race card. Shanie has misplayed her race card on the Lake Street properties, and she knows it.

What is their game plan, you might ask? Their plan is to apply as much pressure on the mayors office with the expectation that Jim will throw his hands up and quit. NEWSFLASH: IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK THIS TIME AROUND BARRIE.

Mayor Ireton is saddled with Barrie Tilghmans administration, none of whom can be trusted. John Pick has done more backpedaling than a unicyclist in the Barnum and Bailey circus. Paul Wilber, should retire his shingle. A sitting judge has opined that Wilber works for special interests (landlords) and not the citizens. How can anyone expect Jim Ireton to perform as promised during his campaign, when the city administrator and city solicitor can not be trusted? I won't even get into his department heads that think they still work for Barrie.

So what can we expect from our new mayor? We can expect him to have to fight for everything. We can expect the council majority to fight against him at every turn. We can expect nothing to get done, no matter how hard he works or how loud the citizens scream. Is Mayor Ireton's term in office going to be a term of vetoes? If necessary, I hope so.

Until the administration, council majority, department heads and others get the message, THE WITCH IS DEAD, I predict a long 4 years for the mayor and citizens of Salisbury.

Thanks for sending out that info. As said it was told to the public what Mayor Ireton would be doing.
He took over a "hornets nest", & changes will come, but don't expect them to come overnight----just doesn't work that way. Give the man a fair chance!

Horse sh)t he could fire people.

I pray the hand of God is on Mayor Ireton.

Remember, many of Shields constituents are of the same mind-set as she.

This "gift" would cost the city $50,000 up front (a non-negotiable requirement) to pay off the current owner's mortgage, a bunch of legal fees, and then up to a million and a half to remediate the petroleum-contaminated soil and remove the above ground structures. The "gifter" would walk away with $50K plus a tax deduction of the $300,000 the property was last assessed at. Sounds a lot like the fire palace property deal, doesn't it?
Ireton exercised due diligence and protected the city from some outrageous spending and liability.
Kudos to him.

Yes, Mayor Ireton has a HUGE job in front of him trying to fix what the former administration messed up. It will take time, and unfortunately more time than necessary because of all the "soreheads" trying to thwart his attempts to make things right. I hope he continues to have the strength to fight them - Mayor Ireton is a good and honest man who truly cares about this city. I'd love to see what he could do without the losers making it difficult for him!

Good post. Let's keep our eyes on who are the real problem here: Louweasel, Bubba and Shanie. Much as I want Ireton to give some of those people the book, reality says he can't. And why not? See above.

You should try working for these morons!

Wow, Joe, is all I can say! What a slam-dunk you have written!

The headline on this says it all!

"I won't even get into his department heads that think they still work for Barrie.

So what can we expect from our new mayor?"

Here is a start, he has the perfect opportunity by placing the right person in as a new department head. We have a position open for Fire Chief and he needs to get rid of Hoppes and Gordy. If he doesn't those two will continue to bankrupt the city. Mayor Ireton please do what you promised.

The fire chief is only one department head, there are quite a few others that think they are still working for the old regime. I believe if Mayor Ireton was able to do it, he would clean house. Not going to happen with the Motley Trio.

5:43 pm is right, though. See retired. He doesn't need to get council approval to get rid of him.

The council might stand by Hoppes, BUT, if they are conducting a search and find a great fire chief, the council bozos are going to look like the obstructionist clowns that they are by rejecting a qualified candidate just because he's not their personal pick.

People should write the mayor and council and encourage a fresh start for the spend-happy fire department.

This is a great place to start since Ireton is limited on his house cleaning due to the three power hungry dunces.

Sure hope Albero reads this article by Ghanima, than maybe he will stop all his ranting and telling the Mayor "he don't got no balls". Ghanima your posting is very well stated, quite unlike all that babbling Joe does.

A Great Post!

But it may not be 4 years for Ireton's term -- at the work session today they are going to discuss moving the election date, which could mean shortening the term of the mayor and council members we elected this year. And the next election could be next year rether than 2011.

Anon 716 an election to rid us of the council pres and vice pres can't come soon enough. If they move the date good for them the sooner the better. Ridding the city of the scumsuckers we have will be a plus for all. Then the mayor can do his job without all the tension, backstabbing and viscious game playing. We might also get lucky with them gone that other blogger won't have anything to blog about.
