Petition To Close Down Super Pet

close down super petTarget:super petsSponsored by: lesley young and citizens for animals

"Dear readers:

This is a petition to try to close down super pets in salisbury md. Recently a string of posts have been posted on craiglist about the condition of the animals in their care. Many of us have been inside this store and seen many animals with dirty and nasty cages little to no food and little or no water. Most of the time the animals are shoved in cages with many other animals. They never get a vets care and it seems they have no regaurd to ahve well they are taken care of. There have been many horror stories of many pet lovers buying animals from there only to have them die in a few short hours or days. Then upon returning to the store you get a lousy explination on to why they might of died and a new pet or a store credit. If you get a new pet and it dies then you get only get partial store credit. They sell most of the cats on a buy so much of cat merchandise then you get a cat free. Many people believe that super pets should be closed down or have some kind of investigation . Their store maybe mostly tidy but their animals are not in very good shape. Please help me and others like me to close this store or make them take every pet to a vet before they can be adopted out. Then provide proof when they get adopted out. If you're with me then please sign this petition and pass it on."

Your appeal would have more weight if you weren't borderline illiterate. When an adult can't compose a simple paragraph, and is just stringing random thoughts together you tend to question their overall intelligence and their ability to make rational evaluations.

My question would be have you contacted the owners of the place and given your views on this instead of trying to close a place of business down which you will have a very difficult task ahead of you to do...Everytime I have visited the store it is run by teenagers...never see an adult so to speak to oversee things...You might want to start there instead of an all out war to close it down...

Why are you trying to close down his business? Does he have to be nice to the cat food and flea collars? Getting someone to go in and stop his selling of pets is one thing, but to shut down his business entirely is way too far.

All this is true about Super Pet I do not enforce shutting it down but i would like some care for the animals. None of the animals there do not get basic vet care. Cats do NOT get the most important vaccine the FELV(Cat Leukemia) and FIV (Cat AIDS) (both are life threatening) which can be spread to other cats very easily especially if you have others at home. Same with Dogs too they do not get their Parvo Vaccine (Parvo is pretty much a death sentence for puppies - costs lots of money to treat and is hard to get cured from it. The animals do need to get some care... there should be a vet there for help stop this.

This place and all other "puppy-mill" pet stores should be shut down. I know a handful of people who bought pets from there and every one had problems. None died but all have some sort of problem that needed immediate attention. It is a shame this even happens. Just because you goto a breeder doesnt insure they are not running a "puppy-mill" either. I did my homework and found a breeder i wanted to go to and when i arrived it was a mess. Catch-22 here is if we keep patronizing these places they will stay in business, but it would have been tough for me to walk away after seeing the condition and I in fact wanted to take all the animals. I called several people to try to get her shut down including the Humane Society but unfortunately they seemed to have their hands tied. The sad fact is these places will continue to do what they do for money. Micheal Vick doesnt have squat on these types of puppy-mill owners...

My first question is who is the author and what is their agenda. Is it simply against this one business or all businesses selling pets? Second has anyone called the owner and discussed the post to get their response?

Not having an education does not mean you don't know how to properly care for an animal. The owner of the store is suppose to be a college grad! Pet stores are governed by the department of ag. Most repitable breeders do not sell their dogs to pet stores. Pet store dogs come from people breeding for the simple fact of making money on their dogs. No genetic health testing, no regard as to the standard for each breed, etc. Pet stores are always going to be pet stores....45 years ago I tried to close one in the Washington DC area, didn't happen. The best we can do is locate these puppy mills and let the Dept of Ag know. I have aided in the bust of a huge mill in So. Md years ago. Unfortunately for every one that is closed, three more will take its place! It is unfortunate that these stores can't even take care of a hamster or gerbil properly, but it does come down to dollars and cents...the bigger business with all their investors can afford a large staff, like PetsMart. Let's not try to close down the little guy, but help him figure out how you can assist him so big corp doesn't take over our little town! Salisbury Super Pet is a small locally owned business, lets not loose that! Is big corp business what we want to take over our town? Now I have to get some work done, by 10 minutes blog break is over! And please ease up on the grammer and spelling...like most people are minds are going faster than our fingers..not to mention the new age of text messaging with all the short cuts! Have a Nice Day!

my family has also gotten several pets from salisbury super pet. we always take them straight to the vet.so far so good. we have used our own but the pet store states it will handle bills if johnson mckee is used. i am 36 years old and we currently have 2 dogs from super pet. both are just fine and were when we got them. it is dirty and it does smell but they are animals in cages, you can only do so much. i agree that they can do better but they dont need to be shut down. as abrasive as the owner is i am sure there have been numerous complaints that have to be investigated and yet they are still here. as for the cats, they are pretty much strays that wouldnt have another chance, that is why they are free w a purchase, you should expect vet bills for any "rescued" animal. i read the petition and i dont know what people in australia and canada could possibly know first hand about the business. what a joke. sorry for sentence fragments, i have alot to say and am trying not to take up too much space.

Shut that nasty place down!! I got a kitten from there and she was fine for a while. Then she ended up getting really sick. Had to rush her to Emergency Pet Place on by K-Mart on Thanksgiving Day. This happened 4 years ago. Have to give the Emergency Pet Place a lot of credit. They tried everything this could to save her. Unfortunately my kitten ended up dying. I spent $1200 that day trying to do everything I could to save her. Of course I would have spent $12,000 if they could have saved her. I was completely destroyed. They were not sure, but they think it was feline leukemia. I will never forget how much my little girl suffered that day. Every breath was a struggle. Of course the owner would do nothing for me. I will be signing the petition. I have heard from many vets as well as some volunteers at the Humane Society not to get animals there. They unusually end up at the Humane Society because the owners don't have the money for the expensive treatments they need. It's crap. I have since adopted 2 animals from the Humane Society. Both are happy and healthy. I will never go back there. So be warned. Good luck if you did adopt an animal from there.

I have several friends who have bought puppies (one recently) from Super Pet and have found that their dogs carry kennel cough. Now, I agree as business owners the pets in their care should be properly maintained. However, WE as consumers make or break a business. I, personally, would not buy a pet store puppy. However, if consumers as a whole educated themselves on buying animals from reputable breeders or adopting/rescuing animals in need, then these types of businesses would not exist.

Maybe a better fight would be to educate people on the negative effects of buying pet store, puppy mill and "backyard breeder" animals as well as inform them of the many positive aspects of adoption/rescue.

I personally would not sign a petition to end someone's business, but as a consumer I can certainly decide not to buy their products.

In addition to a previous post:

I checked out the petition. What I find interesting is the amount of responsibility some of these signers put on the store employee's. Let's think about this for a minute. You want to buy your child a lizard. On a whim, you buy the animal and all the supplies. A month later your animal dies and you want to blame it on the pet store employee (aka - most likely a teenager with NO educational background in the field). Why didn't you research all you needed to know PRIOR to buying the animal?

It's very unfortunate that animals are dying. I don't condone that at all. But, you have to admit that there needs to be some consumer responsibility as well.

Recently the laws have changed in our county with the dog laws as well as Pet Shop regulation. I think that before this gets out of hand, the Humane Society should step in and see what can be done to make the place better. Understand, I am NOT FOR pet shops, but they do serve a purpose for the most part. Maybe with a little constructive help from the Humane Society we can co-exist. JMO.

I have a shih tzu that I bought there about a year ago who hasn't had any major health problems thus far. Upsetting to read this, cause I love the little guy to death. Some of their larger breed puppies don't sell for awhile and begin growing and are stuck in cages that seem way too small. Knowing what I know about pet store pets now, I will definitely go the humane society route next time around.

For what it's worth, the teenage girl that helped us when we bought the dog was a huge help, and genuinely seemed to care about the dog. I definitely agree with one of the earlier commenters who said the store seems to be run by teenagers, I have literally never seen an older adult in there and have gone in 6 or 7 times.

I havent been there in ages-got tired of seeing all the dead fish in the tanks

My wife and I were just in there yesterday. The stench immediately hit me and I walked back out. My wire was braver and continued in. I would think an effort to keep the cages cleaner would help with both the smell and overall health of the animals.

It's a shame to see so many failed businesses in that Centre.

I couldn't get past the smell when I went in for fish food and never went back. there is no excuse for it smelling sooo bad. They need a good filtration airing system and good elbow grease to clean it up...

Go on line & look up Puppy Mills. Those of you who arent' aware of how they operate will be in for a shock, believe me!!
At present, I am fostering a dog that came from a Puppy Mill! They extimate she is 8 yrs of age, was kept in a cage all her life & bred up untill the rescue. Tomorrow she goes in for 3 different types of surgery. All a result of no proper care her entire life!! The problem is GREED. These places care nothing about the animal & they are raised indeploring conditions. The breeders only care about the money! You will find through research that most Pet Store dogs come from Puppy Mills.!!!!!! Inbreeding is rampid & defects in the animals are passed on & on & on!! At present Maryland has NO regulations or Inspectors, and No license required for them to operate. You go through the AG. Dept. to report. The Humane Society is allowed to step in --only if it warrents cruelty, is what I understand. You will need to look at State & County Laws to find out what cruelty laws would allow the Humane Society to come in. Although County Laws were somewhat changed they are still not as helpful to the animals as could be! We need to contact our representative to let them know THEY NEED TO MAKE CHANGES IN THE LAWS TO STOP THIS! The more puppy mills are allowed to exist----the more dogs in shelters will be killed!!
"Pet Smart" no longer carry dogs for sale. I would like to thank them personally for doing that & am taking my business to them.
When you buy without seeing the dogs mother/father /where the puppy is raised or the breeder --- you are asking for trouble ! E.Walls

I use to go to the Super Pet in Salisbury every week for years, to get supplies and food for my animals. As of now I will never step foot back in that place again. Over the past 3 years I have found 5 dead animals in cages there; one green anole, one bearded dragon, two reticulated pythons and one ball python. The anole was in the cage so long it was just a skeleton!! As an avid reptile fan I was completely outraged!! I told the employees the animals were dead and they seemed to care less. One response from an employee was, "Oh, well that one has been sick for a while". Then take if off display and stop trying to sell it for $200! I asked to speak to the owner and I was told he was very busy. On the last two occasions I called Animal Control. They told me they had to send out a letter first to the pet store to notify them they would be by to inspect the place (which to me defeats the whole purpose of an inspection because of a complaint) and for reptiles, pet stores actually have no regulations of standards of keeping. I have also seen puppies from there come out with Kennel cough and the Parvo virus! Two very contagious things, if one has it they all will likely have it. I have seen kittens in there with conjunctivitis and Iguanas with rubber jaw due to dietary deficiencies!! I have had reptiles for 8 yrs and would never even dream of keeping them in the conditions I have witnessed at Super Pet!! I totally agree with the idea that that place needs to be shut down, it's not fair to the animals that are being kept in such horrible conditions. Who wants to buy a sick animal that has not had proper medical attention when needed?!

Anonymous said...

SuperPet has always sold puppy mill puppies, don't believe they are from a local breeder. The kittens they get from people walking in and dropping off litters, and they DO NOT get any basic vet care before adoption. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS!!! We need to shut puppy mills down! Adopt from a shelter, save a life! And don't forget, ALWAYS SPAY AND NEUTER! All animals that are born should have a home; they should not be born only to die.

I can say that the animals do get to the vets, because I have been at the vets office and the employees have dropped off puppies to be checked out. I know the offices that takes care of my animals is not cheap office for animals to be seen, but the care is great. I have been going to the same office for years with all my animals. So if there is a problem I recomend that you demand to speak to the owner instead of trying to shut it down. Also one other note all the times I have been in the store the animals were being taken back to be cleaned, watered, and fed. So I have never seen anything off the wall in this store.

This petition isn't worth crap. Do as I do and refuse to patronize the business and inform others of the same. I'm no friend of this business as I too have had problems there before. The easiest way to shut them down is to dwindle their cash flow.

Many families across the country own at least one pet. Regardless of what type of pet it is the pet in a way becomes a member of the family.

Good luck trying to talk to the owner. He couldn't care less what you think. Try to complain and he calls the police on you.

Please notice that I have nothing to do with this petition.

This store is not only horrible in the care/knowledge of their animals, but their customer service is too. The manager, a young woman, not a teenager, needs to work on her customer service skills. Her way of dealing with a unhappy customer is to make inmature personal comments regarding the customer and not dealing with the situation in a professional manner. I have called numerous times trying to get the name of the owner to contact him directly only to be told that they will not release his name. I have even written to the landlords regarding the store with no reply. So, for those of you who think that SuperPet isn't that bad or they only need to work on their treatment of animals, it goes much deeper.

I don't think people understand the point of the kittens. People donate them to the store because the store won't put them to sleep like many of the local shelters. The $20 of stuff you are buying is for the cat and the vet care is your responsibility. If they gave the cats away free people with bad intentions could take them. The $20 seems to more of a safety than anything else.
