Crisfield Chief of Police
"Hey Joe...
I had gotten some information about the Chief of Police in Crisfield..Michael Tort...I received information that he was stopped by a Maryland State Trooper a month or two back for DWI....My question is how come this never made it to the press...How come the Wicomico Co. State's Att. makes it and the Crisfield Chief doesn't....I can't believe it has been so hush hush...But this is Somerset we are talking about...Apparently this is his second time being stopped for DWI....I did a District Court Case search..I didn't see anything...So maybe you or someone could do a little investigation....This incident SHOULD NOT be kept quiet and should be brought to light....No Law Official is above the law and should never get away with such crime...Hope to hear from ya later..thanks.."

There was some reference to this at the time on this site but nothing has ever become of it. It is true and the cheif had an accident on the American Legion parking lot while intoxicated as well. Oh well, this is Somerset where the public officials get away with murder.. What about the Sheriff, any new info on that or is he going to get off scott free as well?
Remember the picture of chief Tabor with his are around the States Attorney? Maybe she covered for him the way she covered for James Henderson.
yeah come on you know the police are above the law. just keep your eye on the next cop you see he will probably be a) talking on his cell phone while b) speeding and c) changing lanes without signaling. All in a day of being a cop
Police departments have a very effective way of policing themselves through civilian complaints. But you have to lodge a complaint before it gets looked in to. If you see a cop speeding while using the cell phone-make a formal complaint with that officers police dept. If the cop was wrong his PD will charge him. But you cannot cry foul anonymously and expect things to change
well how about one of the witnesses against the somerset sheriff being found with an unexplained head injury and being in ICU? That is why nothing gets done about rogue law officers in somerset county
More B.S. This moron doesn't even know his name.
DWI? If he did I'm sure it was a mistake just like the rest of the elected officials who get caught. Right Joe?
The real POS in the Crisfield Police Department is Lonnie Luedtke. If MSP did a sobriety checkpoint from the American Legion any night of the week, they'd have a winner with this guy. This is same guy that wants to harass regular law abiding citizens with petty crap and he's driving under the influence all the time. Just another Baltimore City reject that's found solitude in Somerset County.
What was just said about Lonnie is true but you also must include the city manager and the chief. Nothing will ever come of this because the transplants from Baltimore think this is a hick town with no leadership and sorry to say this is true. There is one statement that is true the chief is a drunk and using the city shield to protect him.

I don't think it is a fair statement to refer to Crisfield as a 'hick town'. Making generalizations about a group of people is never the appropriate response; It elicits negativity and arguments. It is unfortunate that Somerset County has such poor leadership and representation when it comes to the Police Department. I am sure that it is not the case for every single hard working somerset county officer or Crisfield Police officer. I do agree with statements above, that some local police officers (not specific only to somerset county)may appear to be above the law. It is disheartening and discouraging for us law abiding citizens
Lonnie should at least visit a dentist. He's really sexy with his two teeth dangling like chicklets.
It's undeniable that the Cheif and several Crisfield Police leave the Legion most every night intoxicated and driving. My question would be, have the state police boys been told to look the other way and not get involved? Is the States Attorney providing cover for this bunch of out of control police officers? The other question that is screeming for an answer is why there has been no information about the witness to the Sheriff Jones incident that was found beaten and almost dead. This should be headline news anywhere except Somerset County. I first heard this news about 2 weeks ago but haven't seen any reference to it in any news media.
Legion members are well aware of the night Chief Tabor destroyed a parked corvette with his vehicle while leaving in a drunken stupor. No police were called to the scene and the Chief paid for the damages out of his pocket.
To make matters even worse, Mayor Purnell and the city council are well aware of the problem and do nothing about it. They should be held responsible when one of these out of control cops kill someone while driving while intoxicated.
Obviously the chief was not charged in this incident. Maybe the State Police should explain what occured in this situation. It is widely known in this community that Chief Tabor has a drinking problem. In my opinion, most cops cover for each other, maybe this is why he has never been charged with DWI.
I also heard about the beating of the witness to the Sheriff Jones incident. I heard from a very good source that man was severely beaten with a blunt object. I ask, who would posibly have a motive to do such a thing? If the prosecutors have a brain in there head they will certainly be looking into this situation very carefully. Sort of answers the question, why people like to remain anonymous.
Wow it will never change down there. They will run anyone out that goes against the standard corruption. It will only change when the good people are sick and tired and start contacting the A.G.s Office. It is the 60s and no one there seems to care that it is 2009. A Sheriff with a set of balls is all that is needed. The state police could give a crap. They are half of the problem. To think the Barrack Commander thinks he should be the Chief of S.P.D. That is the least thing they need. I am sorry he is a great guy, but if he will not clean up his own back yard, then I have little faith he can fix the problems he will face in an actual city. Show us something by cleaning up the mess there and I know you can win the support of those who are watching and hoping. Do what you are sworn to do. I know you have the skills, but do you have the heart it takes to clean up what has be stated in this blog ? Clean house and make your father proud. I know he paid his dues many times over.
The Barrack Commander cannot buck the States Attorney Kristy Hickman. If you remember Hickman and Sheriff Jones had the last Commander replaced because they didn't approved of the way she ran the barracks. The real problem in the county is Kristy Hickman. She allows this type of activity to continue and will not prosecute one of her own. The Detention center abuse case with James Henderson is another example of her inability to prosecute legitimate crimes. If I were a cop I probably would not bother to charge another cop since I would know the case would be disposed of by the states attorneys office. It's really sad and the folks should really be looking forward to the next election. Hopefully some attorney will step up and run for this important office.
Me and my husband joke that Crisfield PD has a "stand-down list" of certain people who they are encouraged NOT to pull over, because there are so many drunks and criminals openly driving around town, especially those with the "right" last name.Don't even get me started on the dealers, who visibly flash wads of cash even though everyone knows they do not have a job.I have alot of respect for the cops but laws have to be equal for everyone.Black and white, there are people who do what the hell they want and get away with it and nothing is done.
Any organization becomes disfunctional when their main focus is to protect themselfs. Unfortunately that is what is happening with law enforcement in Somerset County all the way from the Crisfield PD to the prosecutors office. Forget about notifying the AG's office. They haven't even acknowledged that they are investigating Sheriff Jones and of coarse everyone remembers that they ignored the Princess Anne jail restoration project, misuse of funds case. Now that we have a witness to the Jones case having been beaten, I wounder if the AG will make the connection?
Well at least they will protecting the town this weekend from the craziness of the crisfield pride lodge every year they have a shooting and still its on going. What about James East wasnt he just elected as county commissoner or something? Its not just the law enforcement agencies with a drinking problem. If I had to be married to his wife Id be drunk 24/7 to.
There has been speculation here about the witness being beaten, but I believe that this witness died from his injuries and that seems not to have been mentioned. If in fact this is true, I would certainly hope that this matter is being investigated from some outside agency.
The dead witness fell in his home and hit his head according to all the reports.Where are people getting he was beaten with bats?
Where pray tell are the reports that the witness fell in his home? I haven't seen any mention of it at all on this site or in the Daily Times. I think someone should report if in fact a witness to the Shriff incident did in fact die, no matter how it happend. How many people fall in there home and die from the injury? Very few I would suspect! How do you know this to be true blutojthetotmon?
When you live in Somerset County you DO hear things but thats what the State Police said on a Channel 16 news report.
And no offense but you cant be a witness to something that didnt happen....The Sheriff is not squeaky clean but running down civilians????No disrespect to anyone but I never believed that.
Something happened! If it didn't, how incompetent is the AG's office in investigating something that didn't happen? I'm sure the Sheriff didn't intentionally run down a civilian but again something happened and no one denies that fact. The deceased witnessed something and now he is dead. Common sense would dictate that this is very unusual. If we had a decent newspaper in our area they would do some investigative reporting and find out the status of this investigation. However we have strayed off of the subject of Chief Tabor driving drunk. Maybe he will have to run over a civilian before we here any more about him.
Anon 1141, you got me thinking so I googled the answer, seems fairly common, One report showed a rate of 1 / 1000 of over 65.
Falls, Often Due to Poor Health, Are Leading Cause of Accidental Death at Home

Chapter 3 -- Leading Causes of Unintentional Home Injury Death
Falls, poisonings, fires and burns, choking and suffocation injury, and drowning and submersions are
the leading causes of unintentional home injury death in the United States. These causes account for
nearly 90 percent of all unintentional home injury deaths. This chapter describes the demographics of
those affected by these types of injuries.
Deaths — More than half (53.7%) of all unintentional falls resulting in death occur in the home (Table
3.1). Another 35.4 percent of all fall deaths occur in a location other than the home, and the remaining
(10.9%) occur in an unknown location. The annual average rate of residential fall deaths is 2.25 per
100,000 persons (Figure 3.1

He may have been beaten. Who knows. Due to the situation everyone assumes it happened because he was a witness. Do you ever think to add up the facts. Where did it happen? Where did he live? Who were his "friends?" What extra activities was he involved in? Maybe drug related and it just so happened that they could get away with it. It will just be put on the law enforcement so lets just kick his butt and they wont look at us. Really who knows. But thats not what this is about. If people have an addiction they need to be helped not judged. Eating is and addiction. How many people are faulted for being fat. It not only hurts themselves but other people. We should not be so quick to condem but we need to embarck on the fact that they need help and support. Anyone can fall into the web of addiction.
I don't know any of the answers 10:06 but I would certainly hope that the police are finding out exactly what happened. 2.25 per 100,000 persons fall deaths is a pretty small number. Any where but Somerset we would probably already know if this were an accident or unusual circumstances. However in this county with our law enforcement personel, we may never know anything.
4:51 Are those percentages from the over 65 category or under 65. This witness was certainly under 65and I guess the speculation comes in because family members have told that physician's in Baltimore said that the injuries were more consistent with blunt force trauma, like those from a baseball bat, or such.
Seems to be many unanswered questions here. Is the autopsy available to the press or is there an active investigation going on into this matter. I would think the States Attorney would have some comment on this situation. If fox news wanted to report on this they would have all of the information provided to them. To bad our newspapers and other media do not demand answers to these very important questions.
WOW...Not one person could find out the answer to this persons email to Joe....Does anyone do any good news follow up investigations...I am sure someone out there can find an answer to the email...Did the cheif of crisfield get popped by MSP for DWI..and why wasnt it posted???...ANYONE???
10:06 you make a valid point about the witness. He was involved in "extra-curricular activities" with many shady "friends".
Tabor is definitely a liability for Crisfield and should be removed soon. He thinks he's come to a town where he can't be touched, but I think his end is in sight.

Michael Tabor is from Baltimore and there are a lot of cases in the surrounding areas; but none in Somerset County
