I hate those rusty things. Look like crap.
It is art created by local vocational students. While it does depict something more "ocean-like" maybe we should accept it for the art that it is and the spirit in which it was offered and be proud of the local students who produced it. Maybe if readers came up with some nice suggestions about future subjects for sculptures they would be willing to produce some pieces that your readers think will be nice illustrations of the area. Come on folks, it's Christmas. Make some nice suggstions her, not mean-spirited things that are offensive.

How about one of the GOB Door hitting Mayor Tilghman in the axx on her way out? I'd bet you'd get all kinds of donations to make that one.
perhaps a good ole 12' johnboat and a small mouth bass would be more appropriate instead of a 60' viking and a white marlin...
While it seems inappropriate for a
"city sign" as a piece of art is is nice, so, we could have an art display in some of the vacant buildings store fronts in the mall, and it would be cool. Call it Ocean Art, one month, Woodland Art, River Art, Farming Art, City Art, different themes each month, the Arts Council could choose the pieces and display them, so the stores do not look so empty.
I hate the rusty look. It reminds me of an old abandoned item that no one wants to maintain. They would be better looking painted.

I am a nice guy. Absolutely love children and encourage them to reach for the stars. That being said this is a terribly idiotic thing. There are no salt-water game fish downtown, and even the crappie in the river have three eyes due to pollution/contamination. What is next a nice sign pointing out nearby alpine trails (in Colorado)? I will also go on record saying screw art/performing art pet projects right now. We haven't even covered basic health and safety needs in the city. Fix the roads, pick up the trash and hire some more police officers. Just a dysfunctional governing body-absolutely no excuses....for ANY of you.

Have them make one of Mike Lewis escorting Barrie Tilghman out of the GOB in handcuffs. Now THAT would bring in the donations.
My understanding is this is a project under the jurisdiction of Urban Salisbury. It's goal is to enhance the Downtown area. It is a shame that people don't appreciate that this is art.
All have been paid for with private funds I believe.
I believe the one in question is being paid for by the Hearne family in memory of their son who enjoyed deep sea fishing. I think the goal is to put it near the Marina.
It is a shame that every post ends up bringing in Barry Tilghman or Mike Lewis.
12:42. With respect; you don't revive or enhance the downtown area with a sign or a statue. You must start at the very foundation first and provide safety, hygiene (i.e. say "no" to all the mold), and jobs. Familiarize yourself with Maslow's hierarchy of needs...art for art's sake is wonderful-but this town needs to really start thinking about more fundamental needs first. If you want to provide a proper tribute to a loved, lost soul; think outside the box. Do not waste money on a soon-to-be rusty sign/statue that will be "tagged" anyway; donate your time and money to local programs like the Salvation Army (is there still a fishing derby in Salisbury?) who can actually maybe organize a program to take kids fishing and such (Pemberton Park, etc.). Otherwise that sign is "giving a kid a fish", but wasting a wonderful opportunity to mentor that kid about the benfits of "learning to fish for himself", and his future family, forever. I would bet your loved one would agree if he truly knew the simple pleasure of taking a young girl or boy into nature to see benefits way beyond that of their Playstation console.
Again, folks, these are donations, not a penny out of your pocket.
While we need the foundations of downtown to be be fixed, the young people making this art cannot fix that.
Open your hearts and just say "thank you" like your mamas told you to do when you got that uncool gift from Uncle Ed.
If it is a local person doing this, then it should be placed on Rt 50 heading east or on Rt 13 headed toward Crisfield.
The art is sponsered by Bill and Judy Hearne in memory of their son as is the one down by the Library showing a dog and young man. The Material is core ten a copper steel alloy that developes a surface of rust and protects the underlying steel. The art is designed by SSU students and cut and fabricated by the welding class at Parkside HS. However Ma_Tech has now taken over the cutting and RD Grier the welding and fabrication.
6:35. OK...Here goes-"Gee, a lime green sweater. Uncle Ed-you just SHOULDN'T have...really" With all due respect, donate something the community NEEDS!! Obviously my feedback about actually spending a little time teaching kids to respect animals/nature and stay off drugs and the streets didn't hit home. Enjoy your "art".
Joe this most certainly does have a connection with Salisbury. One day I went off shore and we caught a fish just like this one. When we got to the dock there was another person that went fishing on that very same day and drove there from where of all places,,Salisbury, Coincidence? I think not. After doing some research I found out that a number of people have driven from Salisbury to Ocean City and acually gone out to catch fish that look like that. Connection enough? We also went to a rodeo in Texas so I hope a Bullriding statue is next.
