Oh Boy, another chance to be selected as an All American CityTeach everyone at Walmart how to operate a chain saw and keep one at the counter, and that will break up some of that crap. Bring on your knives you dirtbags and loose a damn arm or leg. Walmart sells firearms, the manager working that department should be permited to carry a weapon after proper training. If you ever went into old Dave's Sport Shop, everyone of those guys were armed all the times. If nothing else they all should have pepper spray on hand. Sooner or later you have to take out the trash, if not it just stinks worse. Walmart paying hazard duty?

Got this information from a family member who was in the store working:

It was north Salisbury Walmart and there were two separate incidents.

1) An employee workplace injury - large staple to hand (laceration)

2) A thief stole some electronics by cutting them out of the package and an employee caught them at it. An argument and chase ensued and the thief stabbed or cut the employee in the hand.

I was told one of the guys that likes to chase ambulances around ran off the road responding up there.
With the economy the way it is why are the fire engines and all these "ems cars " chasing the ambulances? The fuel budget wouldnt be spent already if they stopped putting so many peices on the road. In Salibury they can do what they want.

My heart goes out to those affected. I was 'strabbed' once and had a hell of a time getting over it. Infection was terrible and cold sweats to chill a twelve-pack.

I just kid, but I just could not resist.

"Clean up in lawn and garden..." Now that's funny shit.

Yep-a revolver under the counter would make a crook think twice-but who am I kidding? We are in Maryland, where only criminals & cops freely carry guns.I sure wouldn't endanger myself chasing someone trying to steal.

2)...the thief stabbed or cut the employee in the hand.

7:53 PM

What is it a stabbing or a cut? Big difference there.

Dispatch to Station 2 by Wicomico 911.

An ambulance and a fire engine is dispatched to a "reported" stabbing. Can someone tell me what in the world a fire truck is needed on a stabbing or laceration to the hand? Was it a hot knife and they were worried about the patient catching on fire so the fire truck would put them out?

Apparatus Responding to the first call - Engine 210
Paramedic 161
EMS 1 (crown vic)
Assistant Chief 1 (SUV)

Crown vic wrecks going to the stabbing call and creates another incident on Naylor Mill. Now Station 2 is dispatched for an accident on Naylor Mill Road. An engine from station 2 responds and the paid crew from station 16 who wasn't dispatched responds as well as an ambulance.

Now we have 8 pieces of emergency apparatus on the street responding full code for a bullshit cut to the hand. Someone could have been killed on that call and the city and county should be held responsible.

Why are all of those cars and fire trucks responding on ambulance calls anyway?

David See and Richard Hoppes should be terminated immediately before someone is killed because of their negligence, stupidity and poor leadership.

If it was you that was stabbed or your house on fire you'd be whining that they cut fuel costs and didn't send enough pieces out to help YOU.
They're the professionals and they do their job the best they know how, you're an armchair quarterback so take a step back and let them do their job.
In the Fire/EMS world it's always better to send too much and for the worst case scenario, than yo get there and not have enough to get the job done.

Okay.. I agree with you that they sent to many vehicles to a stabbing! Why do they call five
deputies from Dunkin Donuts for a bullshit riot call? hmmmmm!

Someone who obviously doesn't pay his bills or taxes.

To much is overkill you stupid moron! That is why we are having these stupid accidents and killing people.

I hope the idiot driving carelessly and wrecklessly was ticketed. If not the investigation officer should be reprimanded.

Um, uh, 814 AM, I know who you are and I better not catch you doing anything wrong. You are the reason people hate firefighters. Get a real job moron.

There is a simple reason why a fire truck is dispatched to a stabbing. Its called an exta set of hands.

These ambulances go out with 2 on board. Usually an EMT and a Paramedic. Sometimes two EMTS or two Paramedics.

Now lets say that said ambulance shows up and the person is your family member who is mortally stabbed in the abdomen. Your gonna need someone to hold the knife to stabilize it manually. You know so it doesn't move and cause more damage to your family member and bettering their chance of survival.

After manually stabilizing the knife you need to stabilize it by other means. Rolled up trauma pads, cling, pretty much anything that will do the job.

After the knife is stabilized the patient would need to be moved on to a backboard. This is in case the person goes into cardiac arrest and chest compressions need to be started. You need the support of the backboard to do effective chest compressions.

Once loaded into the back of the ambulance, the Paramedic needs to start an IV to replace the vital fluids that the person has lost in the blood.

Now comes the transport. In a serious stabbing situation it will not just be the Paramedic in the back. The Paramedic needs a little help. The Paramedic needs to do an online consult with the recieving facility, monitor vital signs, control bleeding, start CPR in case of cardiac arrest, intubate the patient to maintain an airway.

Also, during massive amount of bloodloss the patient could experience altered mental status and become violent. Therefore injuring himself even further, or someone else.

Do you think one person can do all this in the back of an ambulance? If you think so, I would like you to do our job by yourself. Let's see how that turns out for you and your family member.

ALSO lets take a look at the area of the incident. Walmart. 100's of people. Crowds. Crowds become unruly. If you don't think so, go to the mall and watch a Friday night fight. The extra help is there for the safety of the medics and the patient, including the crowd. Yes this is what the Police are for too. How you seen city Police staffing? Just look at some of Joe's other articles on this.

So there is a need for a fire truck to respond on stabbings. Ambulances usually get there first and if the fire crew is not needed, they are turned around. The assistant chief is a commanding officer who is trained in litigating emergencies.

Accidents happen people. O'Barsky had an accident. He was going to help someone. In this case, two people. The offender and the employee.

The reason why the duty crew responded to the accident was because 911 dispatched them first, in error. They corrected their error. Now why they did not turn around is anybodies guess.

Read 5:17-- He's completely right.

To 7:27: "Someone who obviously doesn't pay his bills or taxes."

I very much do, thank you. I also happen to be one of those "stupid" firefighters who respond to your so-called "stupid" stabbings and "stupid" fires, just not in Salisbury. And fuel costs? Oh please. You even bought gas lately?

"To much is overkill you stupid moron! That is why we are having these stupid accidents and killing people."
Too much is NOT overkill. If it's dispatched as a stabbing, it is the responding company's obligation to assume the worst until told otherwise, because if it is the worst they need to be prepared. If it was dispatched as a small laceration to the hand, I'm sure things would have been much different. People like you just have no appreciation for the hard work it takes to do this stuff until it's you dialing 911. Fire alarm activations are always treated as if it's a real fire because if you get there and the place is really on fire you better have the equipment necessary there, and not five or ten minutes away otherwise people like you would be asking "Why weren't they prepared? What do our tax dollars pay for?"
It costs money to do these things to a level that the public expects. Unfortunately, accidents do happen, but due caution is always taken. We live in a world where you can't afford to be unprepared in Fire/EMS in any situation.
