Political Question

"Maryland currently has a Black Lieutenant Governor and the U.S. is facing the fact that we may have the first Black (albeit 1/2) President or woman Vice-President. So, how can Maryland still offer minority contracts which guarantee a percentage of work to minorities, either of color or gender (women) in the State of Maryland? If a black man can rise unfettered to the highest office in the country or a woman can rise to second-highest, why do we still need these government grants?

To clarify my question: my husband and I (both white) own a small dump-trucking company. We have friends that are black who are guaranteed jobs through this program. Honestly, on the Eastern Shore, white-owned hauling companies are not the majority. So realistically, should we, as the white "minority" be able to sign up for these contracts that we have been denied?"

Currently lower income whites are the people the media and liberal elites love to hate, along with Israel and middle age white women.

well you and you husband could qualify if you were the majority or sole owner.
the laws are written to allow any minority (anyone but a white male) to have access to minority business contracts

Equal Rights? How about equal rights for all with no discrimination. Do you really think the liberals would put up with any of that nonsense? If it ever did happen the liberals would loose all of the political power.

This woman obviously doesn't know what she is talking about when it comes to MDOT contracts. If she owned 51% of the business and had a working knowledge of the business they could become certified as a MBE. Secondly, only on the east side of the Vienna bridge are white dump truck owners in the minority.

If you are in the dump truck business why don't you ask Debbie Flaig why it's so hard for white women to become certified. They know all about minority contract fraud.

You can try to qualify for anything
if you are white , you just ain't gonna get it. These laws are old and out-dated , they need to write new ones eliminating the minority clauses. They award some of the contracts and the people don't know their ass from a hole in the grouhd.

Affirmative action, can you say reverse discrimination?

Employers should be able to hire the most qualifed, not be forced to hire any certain race when they are less qualifed.

A wise employer would hire the person who is going to make them the most money regardless of race. Affirmative action is a perfect example of too much government, they need to clean up their own houses before the facists dictate who a business can hire.

As the author of the question, I understand that a female could own 51% of the business and file minority. The problem is that when the other 49% is owned by her husband, it is much harder to get the minority paperwork to go through, especially if both are white.

My point is not that I could have applied if I owned 51%, it is that it is an outdated policy that should be repealed because there is, now, obviously equal opportunity for the groups it originally was designed for. Once again, if a minority is on the verge of becoming President or V.P., a minority is not held back from opportunity.

Thank you, Joe, for withholding my name in the original piece to avoid repercussions in our line of work.

Affirmative action is soo outdated but on the Eastern Shore I could see a potential problem if it were eliminated-the "good ole boy buddies" of politicians would get the contracts.Other than that issue,I can see where the whole AA thing is unfair to all business owners.

You make it sound like all the work goes to minorities. NOT TRUE. There is a maximum of 14% minority participation required on STATE projects, city and county have no set aside for minorities in their contracts. Not every SHA contract carries the maximum, it depends on the dollar amount. When the new part of the bypass was built there were very few local dump truckers working on that job, most of them came from across the bridge. You tell me why an out of town contractor would bring a hauler from across the bridge in to do local work?

maybe she should shack up with a brother until she gets the minority funds ext....sounds like she being a baby.
