The County Is Busting Out At The Seams

A special Office Space study was supposed to be discussed at the County Council Work Session Meeting Tuesday but was removed from the Agenda at the last minute.

OK, I'm going to stick my neck out on this one folks, call it instinct or a hunch.

Over the last couple of years Mayor Barrie Tilghman has been quietly looking around for their very own Government Office Building. I personally believe County Executive Rick Pollitt and Mayor Barrie Tilghman have been working together in making sure this dream becomes a reality.

Remember back when, I asked the City through a PIA request if the City ever paid that $1.00 for their 50% of the GOB? Their was a contract in which the City was supposed to fulfill many years ago and the City never gave up the $1.00 nor signed the agreement.

Well, don't be fooled Ladies & Gentlemen because the States Attorney's Office now has 42 Lawyers on Staff. That's right, I said 42! They are absolutely out of space and they are desperately trying to figure out ways to make everyone comfortable and this seems to be an impossible task.

While the States Attorney's Office has their own issues to deal with, the Judge's are also completely out of room and they too need additional space. You know, crime is obviously on the rise in Wicomico County and downsizing is not going to happen.

The County Government is already out of space and the one key answer to fixing their immediate problems and needs would simply be to send the City packing and nothing would be greater to Mayor Barrie tilghman than to be forced into a position whereas the City MUST relocate and find their own space.

Are you following me now? The Mayor refuses to do anything with the Old Station 16, that's not good enough and to be fair, it's certainly not big enough. Maybe the old Library? Hmmmmmmm? All of a sudden they're too big for their britches, is that where she's planning to place her name on a building?

They refuse to sign the agreement for 1/2 of the GOB, something is up. I don't care what anyone says, I'm telling you, the Taxpayers are about to get slammed with an easy $20,000,000.00 Building, you mark my words.

Tighten your belts Ladies & Gentlemen because I have been around watching these guys work for years and I'm telling you, it's inevitable. The Zoo wants money in the mega millions, the Fire Department will be slamming you for a brand new Fire Station on the North end of Salisbury VERY soon. The City of Salisbury needs to be absorbed by the County and that's all there is to it. The County also needs to absorb the Police Department as well!

It's only a matter of time, you wait and see.

Joe:

Are you telling us that the City has still not paid the $1 needed to buy half of the GOB. Has it not yet been deeded to the City? Are you sure?

The City paid the $1.00 AFTER I asked for this information. HOWEVER, they refused to sign any contract, period. It was enough to take every one's attention away from the agreement. NO CONTRACT has been signed. The deal is already dead as they were supposed to sign the contract 5 or 10 years ago and they didn't.

let them use motel 6....i mean movie 6...it's just an eye sore anyway and should be taken down.
as far as old station 16 goes, you can use it as a satelite station for E.M.S. or you can classifiy it as city surplus and put it up for sale. just don't give the damn thing away......

Joe,Are you sure about that 42 number? That's really a shocker!

42 lawyers - unbelieveable. Sounds like way to many for a county the size of Wicomico even if crime is up. It would be very interesting to know how that compares to other local counties.

Well Joe what is one to think when Rick and Barrie grew up together in Allen?School buddies and all. They are both in the same building now.You have to wonder what goes on behind their closed doors.I think R.P. is just full of chit.We are just beginning to see the other side.I will not vote for him again.

Does seem to be one thing said and another thing done.

The state tax records on the Internet indicate that the County has not deeded any interest in the property -- it's 821 on map 107 -- to the City of Salisbury. The City Council (are you listening Debbie and Terry-?) should take the appropriate action to protect the City's interest ASAP. We can't count on Barrie to do the right thing.

Please check your info on the State's Attorney's office -- it may not be correct. Perhaps it's 42 total personnel, including attorneys

I've heard the County, not the City, has been inquiring around about additional office space. There are a number of possibilities to move the State's Attorney's Office or parts of it to relieve the pressure.

I can't believe there are 42 lawyeres in the
State Attorney's office. Something fishy there. If so, we should be getting a lot more cases tried and a lot more convictions. It has not been too many years ago when there was only one State's Attorney.

They need more office space. Well the County should build a new Civic Ctr. WOW, why not put the money towards a new Civic Ctr and give the old Civic Ctr to the City for office space. It would solve both problems.
They won't even consider that.

If the County simply absorbed the City, all problems would then be resolved.

The current lawyers in the SAO are Ruark, Vincent, Catlin, Ireland, Montemuro, Coletta, Disharoon, Rothschild, Martz,Starkey, Dougherty,Chernoff, Marsh, Bloxom, Harden and Ross. 14 are full-time and 2 are part-time, for a total of 16. A 17th will start on Oct. 1.

How about the city building a big office building on the old Mall site, and make part of the building or a second building for the States Attorneys offices. That would seem like a good use for this defunct site and put it to good use. Then R. P. would have the whole County office building to himself. A plus would be plenty of parking avilable too.

Maybe with a new lawyer on staff, Ruark can devote more of his time handling the Somerset County Detention Center fiasco that he created. He willingly accepted the title of special prosecutor in that case, but failed miserably in the handling of such. It really doesn't matter where these people have an office, it's how they handle the job that counts.

The county cant simply absorb the city, it's far more complicated than that, the same with the police department.

Barrie Tilghman just wants her name on a building, any building. An outhouse comes to mind. They need to better utilize the space they have and do like everyone else, MAKE DO.

she can put her name on any building and when she's gone we can simply take it down and hang her name over the shit plant.
