Question of the Day, Wed 8/20

Today's topic is the Olympics:

Do you watch the Olympics? Do you think it's important in today's world and it's short-comings, for athletes to be "playing games?" How important is the Olympics to you? If you watch, what's the most impressive to watch? Were you surprised by any of the sports? (I hadn't a clue "fencing" was one of the Olympic games)

i have watched the olympics this year...
i never thought of it from the perspective of "playing games"...this has been the first year my kids (ages 8 and 9) have really been interested and we have enjoyed watching together...that has made it important to watch for me...our favorites have been diving, gymnastics and volleyball for my daughter and track for my son and both of them enjoyed the fencing (they have played that on wii so they thought it was cool)...the most surprising sport...BMX racing and trampolining*

and if you watched last night....exactly how fast are those athletes running? 40mph???

the divers aren't rinsing off after their dives they are standing under warm water to keep their muscles loose for the next dive.

all i can say is when that romanian runner left the crowd and never looked back at 38 years old it was unbelievable. more unbelievable was when she entered the stadium at the end of the race and all the chinese people stood up and cheered,(thats the opposite of war) it showed me there is hope amongst the everyday people of the world. no goverments, no politics, no armies. it gave me hope for the future.

The Olympics have been great this year. Way too many commercials though considering a lot of the events are tape delayed and the results are already available online. Just cut to the action in my opinion.

I have watched as much as possible. I am pleased at the way the athletes from all the countries are interacting with each other, especially in gymnastics. Why can't our leaders learn to get along like that? It is just sad about the attack on the Bachmans (in-laws of the men's volleyball coach. He died, and she was air-lifted back to the States after several days in stable condition). It was not directly related to the Olympics, but sad nonetheless.
