As an accountant in MD, working in both public and private sectors, the wasted fat and over taxation of it's citizens has become unbearable.
We're not just talking about the recent sales tax increase. Excise taxes in MD are high. The cost of being a MD based company is remarkably higher than most states. If the state of MD could find a way to fee you for farting, they would. I swear they create divisions, commissions and departments, just to keep Baltimore city residents employed.
For example, one time I was at the Department of Assessments and Taxation filing some papers for a client. There were 10 queues (actually numbered) with 10 employees under their respective numbers. Oh, I forgot about the receptionist employee who told you what numbered queue to file your papers. Well, everyone in there that day was in the same line. Literally, 6 customers, 10 employees, 1 person doing work. No lie, the others were just sitting around talking about what was on TV the prior night. So I say to them all, why aren't any of you cross trained to help? They all looked at me like I had 12 heads. Does a MD employee know what that word means? I wanted to make a comment that if they were cross trained, they could serve customers faster and require less manpower, and maybe corporations in MD wouldn't have to pay $300 per year, just to tell MD how much to tax them on their business personal property. Well I kept my mouth shut about that part, I wanted to get out of there relatively quick so I stopped making comments.
At least I live in Worcester County. My county piggy back tax is only 20% compared to the other counties. (it's made up for in my property tax) Sussex county is looking real appealing these days.
Thanks for the rant, I could go on and on and bore you all with stats, comparisons and the such. Just be glad you don't have to deal with the unemployables within the state taxing agencies on a regular basis. It's brutal.
I have thoght for some time now that Maryland should go the way DC has gone in expressing themselves on the state liscence plates.
Washington D.C has the phrase, "taxation without representations" on the liscense plates of its vehicles. Maryland either needs, "bring your wallet," as indicated in the post, or "if it moves, we'll tax it" added to the bottom of the plates, in place of the web address.
We pay enough for those things, can't we have a say in how they look?
the taxes in wicomico county are in my opinion "shere robbery". we are taxed and RE-taxed on our money again and again. with the recent sales tax increase in maryland to a rediculous 6% it is insanity. it truly makes me want to move after 20 years here. guess it will be worth the nearing $4 a gal gas to drive to de when i go to wallyworld.
im becoming ashamed of living here and not fighting back. thank you joe for all you do to keep us informed.

Sounds like Delaware is in a bad budget crisis. Majir cuts to every department. Look for 40 kids in a classroom and a sales tax to be in place soon.
ha ha ha ha I love it!
What I love better is that I bought a home in Sussex county just last year. No more money to MD anymore!! hee hee

Washington D.C has the phrase, "taxation without representations" on the liscense plates of its vehicles. Maryland either needs, "bring your wallet," as indicated in the post, or "if it moves, we'll tax it" added to the bottom of the plates, in place of the web address.
