Brew River Sucks!

Look, I can't put it any more different than that. We went there for dinner last night, (4 of us) and if it wasn't for the company, I would have raised hell like you've never seen before!

We ordered our drinks and I swear to you, they came back with lemons in them that had green mold/fungi, (hairy too) on them. The Waiter was fantastic, none of this was his fault. He was very professional and was truly in shock when he saw this on almost every drink.

Then came the ordering of the food. I was told the Prime Rib there was fantastic, so I ordered it. I made very sure that I expressed I wanted a PINK piece of meat, (RARE) yet warm. Do you know what I mean, I said to the Waiter? He replied, I certainly do.

Our food arrived and the exterior of the meat was dark. I simply thought, OK, Pittsburgh Style? NOPE! I cut a piece off and took a bite of it and honest to God, it was colder than room temperature. When the Waiter came back I told him is wasn't even warm, yet it was cooked and I asked for a rare piece. He said, I can take care of that immediately. Within two minutes he was back with a new piece, warmer, yet not at all rare and within 2 minutes it was obvious, the meat was so tough I couldn't stick my fork into it, it had been NUKED!!!!

My Bride ordered BLACKENED Scallops, OK, blackened means what? NOT IN THAT JOINT! Look at the photo above, the actual scallops. Does that look blackened to you? More like, pour on the Tabasco Sauce!

The Prime Rib is pre cooked from Sysco, would be my guess. I used to be in the restaurant business and one reason restaurants throw black pepper and sauce all over it is to make it LOOK like they cooked it themselves. Nope, my guess, pre bought, not much different from the crap you can buy at Sam's Club, yet in this case, my case, NUKED!

It was a HORRIBLE experience and I'll close with this. At 3:00 AM this morning I was in the bathroom, NOT a happy camper, if you get my drift! Hence the finally getting out of bed at 10:15 AM, which you know NEVER happens with me.

So for what it's worth, Brew River Sucks and they'll never see me in there again.

Joe not to make you sicker but have you ever watched the movie "Waiting". Wouldn't suprise me if that didn't happen there. Get a chance rent it. It will change your oppinion about restaurants period.

Thought that was a picture of polyps from a colonoscopy! The food has always been just prettied up frozen Sysco food-people mainly go there to drink and "be seen"

Old West, Cactus Tavera, Hunan Palace, all have excellent food. (there has been an off night at old west, but generally)

Zia's, Fratelli's, Brew River, Greene Turtle, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, are all WAY overrated and food is horrible. Sysco food (sorry Mr. Lankford) is horrible, I hate restaurants that are lazy and simply microwave Sysco food. It's like going to Applebee's or Chili's or something.

Two places I have eaten exactly once and the food was so bad I swore I'd never give them a second chance was Bay Country Meals and Saladworks. The food at either would have been fresher/better out of the dumpster.

In the case of Zia's and Fratelli's, do yourself a favor go to Olive Garden, much better, at least you are expecting chain restaurant crap there.

ANON 11:24 AM, OLIVE GARDEN HAS IT.THE WIFE AND I AGREE WITH U 100%. HARDHEAD

I gave them up yeas ago after we went there for Thanksgiving. What a joke! They sat us in the bar beside the pool table. We had kids running all around us and climbing all over the pool table. They did nothing to correct this. Then we had to stalk the waitress for bread. After dinner we ordered 4 coffees and were brought 1 spoon for all of us!!! The last straw was the FROZEN pumpkin pie we ordered for desert! It was frozen solid. After complaining they offered a small gift certificate which we laughed at and left.

you don't even know what you are talking about. zias and fratellis have just about the best food around here in the salisbury area. EVERYTHING on there menu is excellent. olive garden...thats MICROWAVED.....DRIED UP....P.O.S food. the cooks there don't even have a clue about what good food is or even how to cook.

That is freaking disgusting. I went to BR once for dinner when they first opened up. I had a bad headache and asked the waitress for some water straightaway so I could take an Advil. I waited about 10 minutes and asked again. She said "oh I'm so sorry I'll get it right now!". So I swallowed the two pills thinking that I had water on the way. NOT. I had to actually go up to the bar and get my own water. Horrible service. The food also sucked big time.

Never ever again. Oh, and their landscaping sucks so the entrance isn't even inviting.

Try La Roma -- Vinny has the best food in Sprawlsbury.

Surprised that the bad reputation of "Screw River" hasn't reached Delmar yet!

Anonymous said...

Our card group went for lunch one day last year, and the smell when you walk into the place was enough for us to never go there again.

Our card group went to Vinny's this week for our lunch. It was FANTASTIC! The aroma as you enter if of fresh baked bread and garlic...really, really good!

We went few times for their Sunday brunch...what a joke! EVERYTHING was awful about it....except for the orange juice - which we paid extra for. Not sure how it gets so much hype - maybe its the boat crowd and the bar crowd that love it!
I certainly would not go there anymore. The floors are always dirty around the eating areas and it just is dark.
Not warm and inviting at all.

For great food, casual style, never a disappointing meal....
Delmar Pizza. You know what to expect and are never let down.
Great value, too.
As for BR, my grown son spent an evening there with some out of town friends last summer, spent $200., and then was told he had to leave because he had on a shirt with a team logo on it. Only after they'd had dinner and moved out to the tiki bar area. Four yuppies.
He'll NEVER go back. He said he could have had a better meal at Arby's (gotten more respect, too.)

Joe:

I had a similar experience over lunch one day.

It was one of the worse experiences I've had.

I would not recommend anyone going to Brew River . . . for at least food anyway.

It's got to be the worst restuarant on the Eastern Shore. The food, if you want to call it "food" is terrible. You'll never see me eat there again, ever.

Anonymous said...

Same goes for Goin' Nuts Cafe! The owner there used to work for the Hanna minions. You can add this restauraut to your list of undesirables.

Anonymous said...

I used to be a waitress, and when people would complain about the coffee not being hot enough, we'd nuke it till it boiled. Joe you have made so many enenmies you should risk dining out. You never know what goes on in the kitchen.

Anon at 12:30:

WRONG! Nut's is the second best deal in the "Bury" -- just behind Vinny's.

Here's a hidden gem for Japanese cuisine -- Ichibana(/) -- it's across from the Toy's R' Us. Very nice atmosphere (inside), too.

PS - has Namiste (was in the Golith monstrosity) relocate to the 13 North strip yet?

I totally agree with you about the food at Brew River. I can think of only one restaurant that is worse and that is Harpon Hanna in Fenwick.

Anonymous said...

I agree that Brew River is highly overrated. At times the food is ok, but at other times it leaves much to be desired. I must disagree, however, with "12:34p.m." I have never been disappointed with Going Nuts. The food and service have always been exemplary. And Fratelli's is a favorite of mine.

Another bad restaurant is Watermens in ocean city. YUCK absolutely the worst food ever. As far as your waiter joe and it not being his fault? How come he didn't notice the lemons BEFORE they made it to the table, His job is to check each item for accuracy before it leaves the kitchen/service area

the movie "Waiting" made me not want to ever go out to a restaurant again!

I took my husband to Watermens for his birthday and had shrimp and chicken the shrimp suck. I call and talk to the manager he said he was sorry and would send me a gift card to go again.I have never receive that gift card yet(4 weeks ago)I will never go there again.

Anonymous said...

Goin' Nuts suck! The service was bad and the food horrible! I will never go there again! Too overpriced for what you get!

Anonymous said...

Im glad you wont be coming back. When I saw you there we starting talking, look at the shit-stirer, asshole there! Hell we might have even spit in your meal..lol..

DONT COME BACK!

Joe...I'm glad you exposed this terrible restaraunt. Almost a year ago, my wife and I went to Brew River for dinner. We ordered steamed clams for an appetizer and had eaten almost half of them when a roach crawled out on the plate from under the shells of uneaten clams. My wife killed it and we summonsed the waitress. I SWEAR TO GOD...she looked at it, laughed and said "we won't charge you for the extra food". I looked at her not understanding what she was saying and she said "the roach..we won't charge you for it". Needless to say our appetite was gone. She never apologized or addressed it again. I asked for my bill (why do people call it a "check" it's a BILL). She brought it and walked away. When she came back to get the money, I asked if this is normal to which she replied "nothing is normal". Haven't been back since and will NEVER return. I tell everyone I can about this experience.

Nice restaurant- Red Door. Good Food always. I have never been disappointed, but I get carry out. I hate to eat those big portions in public. Messy but "Oh, so good"

joe albero said...

You don't think that anonymous 4:33 is the Owner of the Red Door, do you????????

Anonymous said...

Joe, U R paranoid. I'm not the owner. There's just not very many places to post restaurant reviews. The Times wouldn't say anything bad, they'd lose ad dollars.

I hope you don't believe the name Frank Hannah scares me personally? You could be responding to another comment here but I can assure you, IF you're speaking to me, he does not scare me.

The Good Old Boy BS is over with in Salisbury.

Gross and double gross!Brew River strikes me as being kinda "hoity-toity"not my style.Yuppie hell,in other words.
LaRoma has AWESOME authentic Italian food and the Cannolis they have are heavenly!
In OC,I LOVE Philips on 21st St.The all you can eat buffet is grand and we go at least twice a season!

I think fraellis is one of he best places in salisbury to eat hands. I would also have to agree on la roma and delmar pizza also.

I love Cactus Taverna. Great food, staff, and the owner is always in to do whatever needs to be done and stops at the tables to see how your doing. You don't always see that anymore and that is a major benchmark for a sucessful establishment.

Carrabbas Italian Grill up on rt 50 by ocean city is money too. The manager that night asked us to move down just a hair while waiting at the bar for our table to make room so an extra chair could be put in. It was no inconvience to us and yet he still comped us an app. He even checked up on us twice at the table as well as making his rounds to the other tables. The staff was great and our waitress was outgoing. Def try it out!

Another great restaurant is Watermans Cove in Salisbury. The people are friendly, the atmosphere is great and the food is always exceptional. I have never had a bad meal there and the wait staff goes above and beyond to make your dining experience an unforgettable one.

There is not a real Italian made cannoli on the eastern shore, they ALL are made with Syscos filling. They are OK if this is all you've ever had, but they are definitely not heavenly, not even close.

For 2 cents I'd open a real Italian bakery but no one would appreciate it due to all the sysco crap passed off as authentic Italian food.

Anonymous said...

I love Cactus Taverna, great astmosphere and terrific food. Fratelli's is ok, but La Roma's is the best. brew river has sucked for years and always will. It has reaked of booze and cigarettes since it opened and the staff, food, and service all suck.

Your right, No one would, because Delvecchio's In fenwick has been open for quite some time and you've never heard of it. John and his son Anthony do a great job. Try their pizza bread (stuffed with pepperoni) and thier Apple Bread. they've been stuggling lately, so give them a try so we won't lose this treasure.

No, I don't Work there. But I count Anthony among my very best friends.

last time I went to Brew River, I had french onion soup and caesar salad. my wife had chicken stuffed with crab imperial. my soup was bitter and tasted like it came from the bottom of the pot and looked like it had been reheated over and over again. my wife's chicken was halfway done and the crab imperial had been placed on the chicken right before they brought it out to us-ICE COLD. not to mention that her meal was around 16 or 17 dollars, they only took about 5 bucks off of our bill when both of our meals were not edible. i think it's pretty obvious that Brew focuses more on the "bar" crowd more than they do their dining customers, and the food quality is proof.

Thank you sooo much for exposing the crap at Brew River. They have a fun bar atmosphere, but the food is horrible. It goes hand and hand with how terrible Harpoon Hannah's in DE is too. We went there one weekend for lunch and there were mice inside, hairs and dirt on the condiment dispensors and the food was horrible.

Reading through the posts I have some agreements and disagreements. Goin' Nuts has alwasy been fairly good in my opinion. Cactus Taverna is awesome. La Roma is good and fresh, plus Vinny is cool... and back to Taverna, the ownwer there is absolutely wonderful.

Good service coupled with good food (yes to La Roma & Taverna), but I have found to be exceptional at all of the places owned locally by Asian folks. When you go into places like Sushi De Kanpai, Ichibana, Shogun, the old Fuji in the Clairmont Shopping Center, and the new Japanese restaurant in the Giant shopping center - the staff is very friendly, the food is excellent and they seem to really appreciate your business... Hunan has been in the game a long time, their servers are nice, but they've fallen a little.

I also agree that Red Door is very good when you want a sub... Fratelli's was horrible when we went and haven't gone back since...

Back to Sushi De Kanpai... the best sushi I've ever had and the owner is the sweetest lady in Salisbury....

I know how Zia's prepares their food and it's not a gourmet restaurant, but I've never been disappointed there... the Bubas family has their system down pact...

I try to throw business to the local folks and try new places, but it's hard to get into the groove of always going back...

Market Street is typically excellent... most chains are usually disappointing and the service is never special, but I've actually had decent food at AppleBee's....

I haven't tried 213 yet, but the Chef's credentials appear untouchable for this area...

Jimmy's Grille was fair... ooooh, the Greek Pita Place was surprisingly good (been there a handful of times)... Megan's Noodles has some some good food, but I can't vouch for what goes on behind closed doors, but he Vietnamese people area very friendly...

Oh yeh, I was just reminded about SoBo's - I love the ambiance, but the food has been quite disappointing... Chicken Quesadilla is to die for though... everything else sounds so creative, but never satisfies... wine selection is fantastic for this area though... it has a very feel good vibe there...

Someone mentioned Delmar Pizza and agree their food is pretty good... AND I also went to Bistro 54 today (across the highway from Delmar Pizza) and their food is certainly worth the trip and the ambiance is surprisingly nice given the location....

Panera Bread is always very crowded and we had a poor experience recently... not bad though...

Green Turtle sucked the first time I went, but they actually stepped up their game the last few times... very fun if there's a game on you want to see... and the diet cokes are good there (yes, I can tell the difference in diet cokes and different locations)...

Joe, let me know if I missed anyone :-)

I believe one of the most under rated and most over looked restaurants in Salisbury is Bay Country Meals. They serve English's Fried Chicken and sweet potato biscuits and all of their sides are made from scratch. No frozen packaged sysco products and no precooked micro wave crap like these italian restaurants serve. And you can get their chicken for $1 a piece during the week. Also they switched over to waitress service ( I did not like their old service format) And I agree Brew River does suck! I also like Cactus Taverna.
