Chesapeake Bay Report

In response to the release of Environmental Working Group’s new report, Bay out of Balance, Environment Maryland Policy Advocate Tommy Landers issued this statement:

“Our approach to Chesapeake Bay restoration is fatally flawed, and it’s past time for us to get it right.  Today’s report by the Environmental Working Group shines a bright light on the problem: we are seriously undercounting the pollution entering the bay from animal manure, and we will never heal our waters until we appropriately limit how much manure farmers apply to our lands.

“In the clean-up plan Maryland recently submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Gov. O’Malley has given Maryland an opportunity to take the lead in solving this problem of excess manure application to farm fields.

“One of the primary sources of the bay’s annual dead zones is phosphorus from animal manure and sludge.  After years of applying too much manure and sludge to our land, this report shows that about one in five bay area counties’ lands have excessive phosphorus.  In these cases the soil gets soaked up with nutrients, like a wet sponge, and phosphorus from any more applied manure easily finds its way into nearby waters and eventually into the bay.

“The critical question is how to design the tests farmers use to determine whether or not to apply more manure or sludge.  States now use inconsistent methods, and Maryland’s approach, the ‘phosphorus site index’ or ‘P-Index,’ is broken.  The P-Index doesn’t adequately address existing phosphorus in the soil and therefore too often advises farmers to apply more manure.

“In Maryland’s clean-up plan, Gov. O’Malley proposed revising the P-Index to better address existing soil saturation levels.  The bay would benefit the most from replacing, not simply revising, the P-Index with a simple test based on crops’ nutrient needs.  Today’s plan moves in the right direction, however, and sets the stage for Maryland to lead the way in correcting this inherent problem.

“I thank and applaud the Environmental Working Group for issuing this timely report about such an urgent problem affecting the entire Chesapeake Bay region.”

The incident happened at approximately 1:55 a.m. on December 3, 2010 as a trooper on routine patrol observed a 2010 Dodge caravan traveling on southbound I-95 at a high rate of speed. DREAM Act Likely Going Down In Flames

Conservatives who oppose the DREAM Act likely don’t have much to worry over it. The bill, which the White House and Democratic congressional leadership have made a top priority, looks like it’s headed down in flames during the lame-duck session.

Republicans and moderate Democrats are uniting against the bill, which sets a path to citizenship for illegal immigrant students. That represents a strong opposition as liberal Democrats mount an effort to push the bill forward this week.

The anti-Dream bill forces are particularly powerful in the Senate, given the GOP’s filibuster power.

Latino Leaders Meet to Oppose DREAM Act

Tuesday morning Latino leaders will join on Capitol Hill to oppose passage of the controversial measure, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2010 (DREAM Act).  The DREAM Act would provide certain minors who are illegal immigrants a path to citizenship if they attend college for two years or join the military.  There are an estimated 12-20 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States.  Proponents and Democratic leaders have pushed hard for the bill's passage and a House vote is expected later this week.

According to Carmen Morales, Latino activist and a leader of the coalition, "Latino leaders are gathered today in solidarity.  We are here to send a strong message to Congress that as Latinos, we stand staunchly opposed to any measure that puts Americans at a disadvantage and rewards illegal behavior."
According to congressional statements and the Migration Policy Institute, if passed, the bill could potentially grant amnesty to as many as 2.1 million illegal immigrants.

With unemployment officially at 9.8% this is a huge mistake.  "I think progressives and conservatives alike can agree on the need to support working and middle-class citizens during a depressed economy," said Leah Durant, Executive Director of Progressives for Immigration Reform.  "This bill would provide in-state tuition rates and residency benefits to illegal immigrant students when many Americans are hurting the most.  What makes sense is for America's jobs and tuition benefits to be reserved for people who are legally entitled to compete for them."

Key provisions of the DREAM Act would:

  • Waive numerical limitations on green cards, and prohibit any numerical limitation on the number of persons eligible for citizenship under the bill's provisions.
  • Allow certain aliens to qualify for in-state tuition rates, even while this benefit is denied to U.S. citizens and legally present aliens residing in other states.

A Michigan woman whose hand was broken while she was reaching for toilet paper can sue a restaurant over her injury.
The case is dividing the Michigan Supreme Court. The court's liberal majority says a jury should decide whether the dispenser created an unreasonable risk of harm at Texas Roadhouse in Taylor.
The court's three conservative justices say there should be no liability for ordinary accidents.

Pat Gillick Makes The Hall Of Fame; George Steinbrenner, Marvin Miller Denied!

The Veteran’s Committee has spoken and Pat Gillick is the only person who was elected to the Hall of Fame.
In addition to holding many other jobs in baseball, Pat Gillick built the Blue Jays from an expansion team into a World Series champ and did an excellent job in both Seattle — building the team that won 116 games in 2001 — and Philly, where he built the team that won the 2008 World Series and continues to dominate today.
But taking nothing away from Gillick, this vote is more notable for who was left off: George Steinbrenner and Marvin Miller. Each of whom belong in the Hall of Fame.

Drunk Driving Will Land You On The Naughty List

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office reminds you to be safe and use a Designated Driver when you go out this Holiday Season.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and other allied agencies will be conducting “Operation Santa’s Sleigh”, a countywide Impaired Driving Enforcement Initiative to keep drunk and drugged drivers off the road.

After hearing about the dangers of drinking and driving time after time, most people have gotten the message that if they’re planning on drinking, they should always plan a safe way home,” said Sheriff Mike Lewis.  “But sadly, millions of Americans still think they are invincible and regularly choose to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink.”

 Sheriff Lewis said parents should take note that young males were at particularly high risk, with nearly one-quarter admitting to riding with someone who should not have been behind the wheel in the past year.

“We know that the holiday season can be one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on America’s roadways due to an increase in drunk driving,” said Sheriff Lewis. “Don’t let your 2010 end in an arrest or worse, death.  Remember, whether you’ve had way too many or just one too many, it’s not worth the risk!”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the month of December 2009, 753 people were killed in crashes that involved a driver or motorcycle rider (operator) with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office recommends these simple tips for a safe holiday season:
Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin;

Before drinking, designate a sober driver;
If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation;
If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement;

And remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk.  If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
