A March 19 federal court decision requiring taxpayers in Tennessee to fund the federal government’s refugee program ignores a 2012 Supreme Court decision, says Richard Thompson, president of the Thomas More Law Center.
The judge’s 43-page decision on the refugee program “is filled with appealable issues,” Thompson told a Tuesday event hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies. “Our view is that we should appeal it” at no cost to state taxpayers, said Roberts, who is the lead pro-bono lawyer in the case.
“We would relish that … this case could very well end up in the Supreme Court,” he said.
A Supreme Court majority ruled in 2012 that the federal government cannot force states to fund federal programs, so “the judge basically backed off because it was too controversial and ruled on the basis of standing,” Thompson added.
The case is important for many states because the federal refugee program forces state taxpayers and governments to fund most of the welfare, aid, and education costs of federal government’s policy of dropping refugees and their children in the states, he said. If states balk at paying the costs, the federal government can threaten to cut their share of federal funding for the Medicare program, he said.
In Tennessee, the federal Medicare program funds one-fifth of the state budget, or $7 billion per year.

Former Employee: ‘Horrifying’ Misuse of User Data Was Routine at Facebook
Sandy Parakilas, a former Facebook platform operations manager, claimed the company’s “horrifying” misuse of user data was routine, and that Facebook preferred to have “no idea” what third parties were doing with the freely available data.
In their report, the Guardian noted that “hundreds of millions of Facebook users are likely to have had their private information harvested by companies that exploited the same terms as the firm that collected data and passed it on to Cambridge Analytica.”
“My concerns were that all of the data that left Facebook servers to developers could not be monitored by Facebook, so we had no idea what developers were doing with the data,” claimed Parakilas. “It has been painful watching… Because I know that they could have prevented it.”
“Once the data left Facebook servers there was not any control, and there was no insight into what was going on,” he continued, adding, “Facebook was in a stronger legal position if it didn’t know about the abuse that was happening.”

Google Launches $300 Million 'News Initiative' to Combat Fake News
Alphabet Inc.'s Google is launching the Google News Initiative, to weed out fake news online and during breaking news situations, it said in a blog post on Tuesday.
Google said it plans to spend $300 million over the next three years to improve the accuracy and quality of news appearing on its platforms.
The changes come as Google, Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. face a backlash over their role during the U.S. presidential election by allowing the spread of false and often malicious information that might have swayed voters toward Republican candidate Donald Trump.
In a separate blog post, Google said it was launching a tool to help subscribe to news publications.

Ocean City Police Release 2017 Annual Report Highlighting 13% Decrease in Crime
In 2017, the OCPD experienced an average decrease of 13 percent in serious crime in comparison to the previous five years, and a 2.5 percent decrease from 2016. The report also shows that there were significant decreases in burglaries, thefts, and simple assaults. Additionally, officer-initiated calls for service increased by over 10,000 calls. This is due in large part to the heightened number of seasonal police officers, the expansion of the public safety aide position, and the proactive nature of the Patrol Division.
“In 2017, we continued to see the lowest crime rates we’ve seen in over a quarter century,” commented Chief Ross Buzzuro. “This is a true testament to the hard work of the men and women of this department. Our personnel are dedicated to the safety of everyone in this city and that is proven by the stories and statistics within this report.”
In addition to crime and enforcement statistics, the Annual Report highlights the OCPD’s renewed focus on community engagement in 2017, such as the Coffee with Cops events, an opiate addiction awareness event, and the first edition of trading cards featuring the OCPD Mounted Unit. The accomplishments of each of the three divisions of the OCPD are also highlighted in the report.

Dems Defend Rather Than Denounce Farrakhan
Louis Farrakhan, leader of the famously anti-Semitic Nation of Islam, is a repulsive figure on the fringes of American politics. But he’s not as much on the fringes as he should be. Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN) introduced a resolution in the House formally condemning Farrakhan for “promoting ideas that create animosity and anger” aimed at Jewish Americans and Judaism, and condemning “all manifestations of expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, and ethnic or religious intolerance.” It was a politically shrewd move, because so many Democrats just can’t bring themselves to denounce Farrakhan. Indeed, as our Arnold Ahlert wrote last week, the entire Democrat Party is slouching towards anti-Semitism.
That became even more clear Monday when Black Lives Matter, the New Black Panther Party and Al Sharpton’s National Action Network led a lobbying effort on Capitol Hill not about denouncing Farrakhan’s racism but to block Rokita’s resolution condemning it. Instead, these rabble rousers want a resolution condemning President Donald Trump for his perceived racism.
Gary Bauer noted the sad truth in the form of some questions: “Did they lobby for criminal justice reform? Better school safety measures in the inner cities? Expanding enterprise zones to boost economic opportunity in black communities? The issue of rules that allow law-enforcement agencies to confiscate cash or other property during an investigation has drawn attention recently.
Such confiscations are often allowed even if no criminal charges are ever filed, and those losing the property must go to court to get their property.
For lawmakers in one state, however, those laws have gone too far.
The Institute for Justice is reporting lawmakers in Wyoming have banned the practice by officers of “badgering” drivers stopped on traffic infractions to sign pre-written waivers transferring title to property, including cash.
The bill, “Roadside waiver of property rights prohibited,” was signed recently by Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead.

Benitez blew a blood-alcohol level two times the legal limit in a police sobriety test, it added, but eventually was acquitted in the case due to flaws in the investigation.

Disabled Veterans Waited Up to Seven Months for VA to Fix Their Wheelchairs
Disabled veterans had to wait more than two months for the government to fix their wheelchairs, leading to some veterans confined to beds because of mismanagement at the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to a new audit.
The inspector general for Veterans Affairsreported this week on problems at VA medical facilities in its southeast network with its repair system for scooters and wheelchairs. One vet waited as long as 210 days—roughly 7 months—for his power wheelchair to be fixed.

Two-time failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton posted on Facebook Saturday to try and explain her widely-criticized comments made in India about Donald Trump voters and his presidential campaign.
Clinton wrote that during the interview, she was asked whether Trump is a virus or a symptom of something deeper going on in American society.
"My first instinct was to defend Americans and explain how Donald Trump could have been elected," Clinton said.
During her comments in India, which were criticized by both the right and left, Clinton said in 2016 she was successful in parts of the country that are "optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving-forward" while Trump won more "backward" regions. "His whole campaign, ‘Make America Great Again,’ was looking backward," she said. "You know, ‘you didn’t like black people getting rights, you don’t like women getting jobs, you don’t want to see that Indian-American succeeding more than you are, whatever your problem is, I’m going to solve it.'"

People Who Enjoy Cleaning The House Are Happier, More Relaxed, Survey Finds
A household name in the cleaning industry recently released findings from a multi-faceted study it conducted in which the findings suggest that keeping a neat living space promotes empathy.
The study’s first component consisted of an online survey of 2,000 American adults which found that those who enjoyed the act of cleaning were 25% happier that those who did not.
Furthermore, those who frequently spruced up the house didn’t seem to experience diminishing returns: for each extra hour of cleaning a week, the average respondent’s happiness increased by 53%.
Regular cleaning was also associated with other positive health outcomes, including improved relaxation (indicated by 80% of respondents), heightened focus (77%), better sleep (72%), and increased productivity (72%), the researchers found.

School resource officer credited with stopping Maryland school shooter
ST. MARY'S COUNTY, Md. - A school resource officer is being credited with stopping the gunman in a shooting that injured two students at a St. Mary’s County high school Tuesday morning.
Authorities say a 17-year-old student fired shots inside a hallway at Great Mills High School at about 7:55 a.m. Deputies said the shooter, identified as Austin Rollins, shot a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, both of whom are also students.
School Resource Officer Deputy 1st Class Blaine Gaskill was alerted to the shooting and according to Sheriff Tim Cameron, he immediately responded and engaged Rollins. Sheriff Cameron said Deputy Gaskill fired at the shooter, and almost simultaneously, the shooter also fired. It’s not clear yet whether Deputy Gaskill’s round hit the shooter.

74% Of Americans Believe The "Deep State" Is Running The Country
For the past two years, the long-running narrative, at least that promulgated by the mainstream media which continues to "explain away" Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump, is that Americans had fallen for a massive, long-running fake news scam (in part aided and abetted by the likes of Facebook), which boosted Trump's popularity at the expense of Hillary's as part of some giant "Russian collusion" conspiracy theory between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin (which Mueller was supposed to uncover, but has instead shifted toinvestigating obstruction, seemingly unable to find anything).
But what if that entire narrative is dead wrong: what if Americans have become so skeptical in the government process and structure, they never needed a "fake news" boost to vote for an establishment outsider?
According to a new poll, that's precisely the case because a supermajority of Americans believes the faction of unelected officials, known as the deep state, is orchestrating policy in Washington, D.C. and effectively running the nation.
The Monmouth University Polling Institute found that no less than 74% of Americans believe in a "deep state" when it is described as a collection of unelected officials running policy. Only 21% do not believe this kind of group exists.
As a result of countless "conspiracy theories" being proven as facts in recent years, chief among which the Edwards Snowden revelations which exposed the NSA as nothing short of "big brother", and the Wikileaks disclosures which revealed how the Democratic Party colluded against Bernie Sanders to promote Clinton's candidacy and countless more such examples, fully 8-in-10 believe that the U.S. government currently monitors or spies on the activities of American citizens, including a majority (53%) who say this activity is widespread and another 29% who say such monitoring happens but is not widespread. Just 14% say this monitoring does not happen at all. Shockinly, there were no substantial partisan differences in these results.

Raleigh police are asking Google to provide user data for all people near crime scenes
Police in Raleigh, North Carolina, have presented Google with warrants to obtain data from mobile phones from not just specific suspects who were in a crime scene area, but from the mobile phones of all people in the area, reports Raleigh television affiliate WRAL. The request will trouble Fourth Amendment advocates as it could be seen that police are carrying out unreasonable searches on people who just happened to be in the area at the time the crimes were committed. And the area sizes the police requesting the data on are not small. In one instance, police requested user data from Google for anyone within a 17-acre area. For its part, Google has not revealed whether it has complied with the police request.

Georgia couple begins hard time for cold food attack
The Georgia couple convicted of attacking a restaurant owner and her teenage daughter over cold takeout chicken have been shipped off to state prison to begin serving lengthy sentences for the beatdown, video of which was recorded by a surveillance camera and subsequently went viral.
State records show that Nathaniel Smith, 45, and LaTasha Smith, 29, were transferred in the past two weeks from a county jail to the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Press Release
On March 17, 2018 Deputies from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Deputies participated in a Sobriety Check Point with the Pocomoke City Police in the area of Ocean Highway and Brantley Road, Pocomoke Worcester Maryland 21851.
A Deputy smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from one of the vehicles that came through the check point. A search of the vehicle was conducted. The Deputy located a loaded 40 caliber handgun in the glove box of the vehicle. Deputies also recovered a small amount of raw marijuana from the driver, who was identified as Camiri Custis, 31 of Melfa Virginia. Mr. Custis was placed under arrest for illegal transport of a handgun in vehicle. Mr. Custis was released pending trial from the District Court Commissioner.

South Africa’s White Farmers
Violent attacks against South Africa’s white farmers are on the rise, according to Paul Toohey, a reporter from Australia’s Daily Telegraph, who traveled to the country.
Last month, South Africa’s parliament voted to allow white-owned land expropriation without compensation. That followed South Africa’s new President Cyril Ramaphosa’s pledge to return the lands owned by white farmers since the 1600s to the black citizens of the country. He claimed the land was “taken under colonialism and apartheid.”
“This is normal in South Africa to be attacked on a farm,” a 39-year old farmer Berdus Henrico told the reporter.
Berdus and his 51-year old partner Estelle Nieuwenhuys have been raided in the Limpopo province. The farmer has three bullet wounds – two through his shoulder and one through his face that came out the back of his neck.
“They took my hunting gun, my shotgun, two cell phones, our DVD player, our TV,” said Berdus, adding that Estelle was praying, out loud, begging them to stop.
“They want money and they want guns. They want the people off the land so as they can go on like they want to. They want it here like it was in Zimbabwe a few years ago when they chased all the whites out and let it go to the ground.”
According to AfriForum, a group that was set up to draw attention to the farmers’ plight, there were a record 404 farm attacks in 2017, four times the number recorded in the country a decade ago. The 2018 figures are expected to easily top last year’s numbers.

Rosenstein, instead, put the cart before the horse: Mueller was invited to conduct a fishing expedition, a boundless quest to hunt for undiscovered crimes, rather than an investigation and prosecution of known crimes.
That deviation, it turns out, is not the half of it. With Rosenstein’s passive approval, Mueller is shredding Justice Department charging policy by alleging earth-shattering crimes, then cutting a sweetheart deal that shields the defendant from liability for those crimes and from the penalties prescribed by Congress. The special counsel, moreover, has become a legislature unto himself, promulgating the new, grandiose crime of “conspiracy against the United States” by distorting the concept of “fraud.”

It all started around midnight in Memphis, Tennessee, on early Friday morning. Police responded to a cry for help around 12:40 a.m., where they say a manager asked a “rowdy party of five” to leave the premises before a fight broke out.

DC lawmaker blames Jews for bad weather
A DC lawmaker blamed a late-winter snowfall on a family of Jewish bankers — accusing them of controlling the climate and orchestrating natural disasters.
Council member Trayon White Sr. apologized for the comments he made in a since-deleted video on his official Facebook page posted Friday morning as snow fell over the capital.
“Man it just started snowing out of nowhere this morning, man. Y’all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation,” White can be heard saying in the video, the Washington Post reported.

Maryland State Police Arrest Suspect In Wicomico County Homicide
The suspect, identified as Zamere Purnell, 18, is charged with first- and second-degree murder, home invasion and robbery. Purnell is also charged with multiple counts of burglary and attempted burglary in connection to other cases not related to the homicide. He was arrested Monday and taken to the Wicomico County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
The victim is identified as Pierre Louis, 67, of Salisbury. EMS personnel pronounced Louis deceased at the scene. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy. The Medical Examiner determined the manner of death to be homicide, and the cause of death to be injuries sustained from stab wounds.
Shortly before 11 a.m. on March 17, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by the Salisbury City Police Department to investigate the apparent murder of Louis. Louis was found unresponsive inside a residence in the 500 block of Priscilla Street in Salisbury.
The preliminary investigation reveals a friend of Louis’ went to the home on Priscilla Street to check on Louis after he did not show up for church earlier on Saturday. The friend called 911 after finding Louis unresponsive inside the home.
Investigators from the Homicide Unit arrived to take the lead in the investigation. Through their investigation, detectives identified Purnell as a suspect. It is believed that robbery was the motive in this case.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was assisted by the Salisbury Police Department, the Maryland State Apprehension Team, the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division, the Wicomico County Drug Task Force and the MSP Gang Unit. The investigation is ongoing.

A House of Representatives fund paid $1 million to secretly settle complaints by staffers. Here are the largest.
The House has disclosed settling 41 complaints of workplace mistreatment for a total of some $1 million since 1997. The list published by the House does not include names, but The Daily Caller News Foundation used court documents to reveal the offices behind some settlements and then cross-referenced with news articles to rank them. The list also omits the largest settlement the settlement office ever handled, involving Rep. Alcee Hastings.
TheDCNF’s analysis found that a seldom-mentioned settlement involving the office of Rep. Gregory Meeks appears to be one of the largest settlements in decades while also involving some of the most serious allegations — including not just sexual harassment, but firing a staffer who said she was physically sexually assaulted by someone connected to a campaign donor.
The data is entirely based on Office of Compliance (OOC) payouts, and so omits some of the most notable settlements, such as one by Rep. John Conyers. The omission is because the Committee on House Administration disclosed only payments that came out of the OOC’s special settlement fund, whereas numerous members hid settlements in their office budgets. TheDCNF analysis of the list of OOC settlements found that much of the $1 million comes from a handful of large settlements, while others are for only a few thousand dollars.

People who fly on airplanes while contagious can indeed get other people sick, but the risk is mainly to those seated next to them or in the adjacent row, US researchers said Monday.
The study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) is the first to quantify the odds of getting sick based on a passenger's proximity to an infectious person.
Researchers studied 10 transcontinental flights and meticulously tracked passenger movements to estimate the likelihood of common respiratory infections like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and influenza, which are spread by tiny droplets in the air and on surfaces.
"Passengers seated within one row and within two seats laterally of the infected passenger had an 80 percent or greater probability of becoming infected," said the study.
"For all other passengers, the probability of infection was less than three percent."

Al Sharpton’s Group And Black Lives Matter Team Up For Pro-Farrakhan Protest
Several black activist groups are holding a protest on Monday in defense of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a notorious anti-Semite and racist revealed to have close ties to prominent Democratic politicians and activists.
Black Lives Matter, the New Black Panther Party and the National Action Network are among the groups spearheading the protest, the organizers said in a press release.

NJ.com reports that photo showed “four rifles, ammunition [magazines], and a gun duffel bag.” One of the students captioned the photo with “Fun day at the range.”
The photo was passed among students and eventually caught the attention of the Lacey Township High School administration. The two students subsequently received in-school suspension for five days, for allegedly violating the school’s weapons policy.
The school immediately faced a backlash over the suspensions, with the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) sending a cease and desist letter to the school district.

Uber driver charged raping passenger after cops stopped their car
An Uber driver from Boston has appeared in court on charges he raped a passenger.
Ranjan Thapa, 26, of Everett, was arrested in the South End of the city shortly after 1am on Sunday.
Boston police were met by Northeastern University police officers who had stopped Thapa after noticing that a female passenger in the rear of his car, who hired him to drive her home, appeared to be distressed.

Feds expand probe into Wells Fargo sales practices
Wells Fargo’s regulatory problems are getting worse — while its CEO’s pay is getting fatter.
The Department of Justice has expanded its probe of the bank into its sales practices, according to a report on Friday — increasing the chances its reputation will take another hit.
The widening probe, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, comes one day after the bank’s CEO defended a proposed 35 percent pay raise for his work last year.
The DOJ, as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission, has interviewed managers in the Phoenix area from the bank’s wealth management division, which typically caters to wealthier clients, the Journal reported.

Residents Of This State Pay The Highest Taxes In The US
Last week we reported that residents of New Jersey were about to enter the 9th circle of financial hell as the state, fast approaching a fiscal, economic and budgetary catastrophe, was preparing to raise taxes on "almost everything."
But if New Jerseyans are approaching a tax inferno, residents of Illinois are already there.
According to a recent analysis by WalletHub, Illinoisans pay $8,300 per home in various state and local taxes, more than any other state in the nation. In the annual ranking of taxpayer burden by state, WalletHub found that Illinois households give up just under 15% of their annual earnings to pay state and local taxes, over 1 percent more than residents of the second highest taxed state, Connecticut with 13.85%. Of course, they also pay federal taxes on top of that.
