Americans Rising Up Against Government: Column

Three examples of pushback against the ruling class.

America's ruling class has been experiencing more pushback than usual lately. It just might be a harbinger of things to come.

First, in response to widespread protests last week, the Department of Homeland Security canceled plans to build a nationwide license plate database. Many local police departments already use license-plate readers that track every car as it passes traffic signals or pole-mounted cameras. Specially equipped police cars even track cars parked on the street or even in driveways.

The DHS put out a bid request for a system that would have gone national, letting the federal government track millions of people's comings and goings just as it tracks data about every phone call we make. But the proposal was suddenly withdrawnlast week, with the unconvincing explanation that it was all a mistake. I'm inclined to agree withTechDirt's Tim Cushing, who wrote: "The most plausible explanation is that someone up top at the DHS or ICE suddenly realized that publicly calling for bids on a nationwide surveillance system while nationwide surveillance systems are being hotly debated was ... a horrible idea."

Purchase of U.S. election-results company stirred controversy
Scytl, the Spanish-based electronic elections firm, has partnered with a leading online security and access provider to state and federal government clients.

The partnership could help safeguard the election programs of Scytl’s U.S. division.

In January 2012, Scytl acquired 100 percent of SOE Software, the leading software provider of election management solutions in the United States. The sale garnered national attention after it was spotlighted by the popular Drudge Report.

Reads an SOE press release: “SOE is now partnering with VASTEC, a leading accessibility access provider to state and federal government clients. VASTEC currently provides Section 508 compliance services at the highest government levels, including the Social Security Administration, U.S. Department of Defense, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.”

MARYLAND REQUESTS ESEA WAIVER EXTENSION FOR TEACHER-PRINCIPAL EVALUATIONS

MSDE Asking U.S. Department of Education for More Time to Implement New Initiatives Well

Annapolis, Md. (February 25, 2014)
– Maryland is moving forward with new education initiatives to further strengthen teaching and learning statewide in the nation’s top school system – implementing higher standards, better assessments and new teacher and principal evaluation systems. To ensure these important new education initiatives are successful, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) presented a plan to the State Board of Education today to request an extension of its implementation timeline from the U.S. Department of Education.

“Over the last seven years, we made the better choice to invest in Maryland’s top-ranked schools, and today, we continue our support of educators and children by giving them the time they need to get this transition right,“ said Governor O’Malley. “This waiver extension would allow Maryland to complete three important transitions – new standards, assessments and evaluations while being respectful of the demands on students, teachers and school leaders.”

(HANOVER, MD) – Maryland State Police have charged two people from Virginia and are seeking two others in connection with their use of fraudulent casino chips in unrelated incidents at an Anne Arundel County casino last month.

Those charged are identified as Rosa A. Nguyen, 36, and her husband, Vuong Q. Truong, 37, both of Annandale, VA. Nguyen is charged with one count of theft between $1,000 and $10,000, and two counts of conspiracy to commit theft between $1,000 and $10,000. Both signed the summonses, which is not an admission of guilt, but indicates their consent to appear in court.

To Mayor Williams and the citizens of Berlin,

Ted Cruz And The Lesson Of Dunkirk

In politics, as in war, you can’t afford to fight the battles you know you’ll lose.

Politics is often like war. Unfortunately, politicians, the media, and the voting public seldom have the same degree of realism and discipline with which professional soldiers fight wars. You can indulge your emotions and base your decisions on wishful thinking in politics in a way that you are not likely to when your own life is on the line in battle.

One of the most dramatic and heartening events of World War II was the miraculous evacuation of British troops trapped on the beaches of France in 1940, at Dunkirk. And its lesson is still relevant today.

The British troops were in France to help the French fight off the invading army from Nazi Germany. But the sudden collapse of the French army left the Brits stranded on the beaches, with the German army closing in on them.

Punitive Economics

The Democrats now seek only to punish.

Barack Obama is working overtime to secure his legacy — a legacy of debt. In his new budget proposal, the president is reneging on an earlier offer to slightly change the formula under which Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) are made, which would have shaved around a quarter-trillion dollars or so off the mounting national debt and added a few tens of billions in new spending to boot.

Which is to say, President Obama is working to secure a gigantic tax increase on your children.

Under current practice, Social Security benefits are raised in proportion to the Consumer Price Index; under the “chained CPI” model, they would still rise, albeit at a slower rate, one that arguably more accurately represents actual changes in the cost of living. (Chained CPI assumes some substitution on the part of consumers as prices change — e.g., if orange juice prices rise, people switch to grapefruit juice.) Even the AARP, which opposes COLA reform as doggedly as it opposes most sensible fiscal reforms, calculates that the change would amount to about $3 on every $1,000 in benefits Social Security recipients enjoy — a trivial amount of money for the individual but one that adds up overall: Changing to chained CPI would knock some $230 billion, possibly more, off the debt the country is expected to accrue in coming years.

More Youths Crossing U.S.-Mexico Border Alone

HARLINGEN, Texas — They come from Central America with slips of paper sewn into their pockets bearing names they are sometimes too young to spell. Parents send them with Bibles, rosaries and small wooden crosses in their backpacks.

The flood of undocumented immigrants has slowed compared to five years ago — likely due to tighter border enforcement and the economic downturn in the U.S. — but in its place is a new immigration surge even more confounding: children and teenagers traveling through the rugged border lands into south Texas, lured by the promise of safety. Up to 120 unaccompanied youths are arriving each day, officials say, a number that has tripled over the last five years and that by some estimates could soon reach 60,000 a year.

The southeastern edge of Texas has become the busiest border crossing in the country for these wandering youths, most of whom are adolescents, though some are as young as 5 or 6. Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents apprehended more than 21,000 minors traveling without families on a roughly 315-mile stretch of the Rio Grande that runs west from Harlingen to the south of Laredo. That was more than half the total of 38,833 detained nationwide.

Club For Growth Releases 2013 Scorecard

Senators Cruz (TX) and Lee (UT) receive perfect scores in 2013; Nine Current Senators Named “Defenders of Economic Freedom”

Washington, DC – Today, the Club for Growth released its 2013 Congressional Scorecard, which ranks the voting behavior of members of Congress based on issues relating to limited government and economic growth.

To view the Club for Growth's 2013 Congressional Scorecard and all prior Scorecards, click here, or go to: www.ClubForGrowth.org/Projects

“2013 saw the emergence of several new defenders of economic freedom as well as continued excellence among old allies,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “Some members have seen their voting records improve and will be honored this year with recognition of their efforts for the first time. While there are more champions of pro-economic growth policy serving in Congress than at any time before, it’s clear that our fight against the big spenders in both parties has a long way to go.”

This year, 31 members of Congress will receive the Club for Growth’s Defender of Economic Freedom Award. Starting in 2011, The Club for Growth required Representatives and Senators to not only score 90 or better on votes cast in a year, but to also have a lifetime score or “LifeScore” of at least 90.

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES $20 MILLION IN COLD WEATHER ENERGY BILL ASSISTANCE

Assistance Will Help Low-Income Consumers with Higher Than Normal Energy Bills

Annapolis, Md.
— Governor Martin O’Malley announced the release of an additional $20 million to help lower-income Marylanders pay high utility bills resulting from recent extreme winter weather.

Working together, the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA), the Department of Human Resources (DHR) and the Public Service Commission (PSC) will administer the benefit. The $20 million in supplemental benefits will be made available to all income eligible households who apply for the Electric Universal Service Program in FY2014.

“Families should not have to choose between staying warm and providing for their families,” said Governor O’Malley. “The efforts we are announcing today will help over 100,000 lower-income Marylanders stay warm and safe during this unusually cold winter.”

The Myth Of ‘Settled Science’

Computer models of climate change have been dead wrong, yet alarmists aim to quell debate.

I repeat: I’m not a global-warming believer. I’m not a global-warming denier. I’ve long believed that it cannot be good for humanity to be spewing tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. I also believe that those scientists who pretend to know exactly what this will cause in 20, 30, or 50 years are white-coated propagandists.

“The debate is settled,” asserted propagandist-in-chief Barack Obama in his latest State of the Union address. “Climate change is a fact.” Really? There is nothing more anti-scientific than the very idea that science is settled, static, impervious to challenge. Take a non-climate example. It was long assumed that mammograms help reduce breast cancer deaths. This fact was so settled that Obamacare requires every insurance plan to offer mammograms (for free, no less).

Now we learn from a massive randomized study — 90,000 women followed for 25 years — that mammograms may have no effect on breast-cancer deaths. Indeed, one out of five of those diagnosed by mammogram receives unnecessary radiation, chemo, or surgery.

Don't Let The IRS Silence You

President Obama’s Internal Revenue Service has quietly announced new rules that strictly limit the ability of 501(c)(4), tax-exempt organizations from carrying out their core missions in the months leading up to federal, state, and local elections. These new rules are seemingly designed to silence the growing conservative grassroots and Tea Party movement in America. Our First Amendment rights are in jeopardy. Please join us in fighting back now!

These new IRS rules will:
Keep citizens from holding their public officials accountable
Silence citizens and chill the very purpose of grassroots groups

Debt-Ceiling Surrender

‘It’s a sad day in the history of the Senate,” Mitch McConnell bitterly announced. The minority leader wanted Americans to know, or at least to believe, that Republicans were outraged by what he called the Democratic majority’s “power grab” — detonation of the so-called nuclear option, exploding the minority’s ability to block presidential nominees.

In truth, the GOP had not done much of anything to oppose Obama picks. Eric Holder, to take just one example, was confirmed by a whopping 75–21 margin — with 19 Republican yeas — despite the Mark Rich scandal, the FALN terrorist pardons, and a history of misleading Congress. The GOP similarly rolled over for one after another of the radical lefties now serving as ministers of Obama’s imperial presidency on the bench and throughout the bureaucracy.

Indeed, in positing their case to preserve the filibuster, Republicans argued that they had approved fully 99 percent of the president’s judicial nominees. How telling that they should see this as a point in their favor. The filibuster was crucial, they inveighed, because it acts as a brake against radical transformation by a slim but zealous majority. Its 60-vote supermajority hurdle enables the minority to force the majority to act responsibly, to push only nominees and policies that enjoy consensus public support. And here, the GOP said, is the clincher: 99 percent of the time, Obama could rest assured that Republicans would not use it.

Rascovar: Is O’Malley’s Presidential Bid For Real?

Yes, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is running for president, but his target isn’t 2016. It’s 2024.

O’Malley’s evolving presidential bid amounts to preliminary maneuvering aimed at securing his future in the next Democratic administration.

Running for president between now and 2016 makes sense if you’re O’Malley. It’s the best way to impress Hillary Clinton and position himself so he gets a high-visibility job in her government.

Look at the situation from O’Malley’s perspective. He loves life as an elected official. He excels at full-time campaigning. He’s shown himself to be an effective government executive.

The Federal Reserve Is Not “Independent” Or “Apolitical”

The Federal Reserve likes to pretend that it is “independent” and “apolitical”.

The Fed offered to bail out Mexico, if it would agree to join the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Free trade deals have nothing to do with the Fed’s mandate

A study published in the Southern Economic Journal shows that Fed policy tends to create a better economy in the 3 years before presidential elections than right afterwards … to help the incumbent get re-elected

According to Robert D. Auerbach – an economist with the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee for eleven years, assisting with oversight of the Federal Reserve, and subsequently Professor of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin – the Fed had a hand in Watergate and arming Saddam Hussein. See this and this

The Fed is not independent … it is owned by the big banks

Colburn Files Own 'Fair Share Act'

ANNAPOLIS — A bill introduced Friday, Feb. 21, by Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Mid-Shore, seeks to establish a sewage and sludge remediation charge for Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission ratepayers.

For the years 2010 through 2013, WSSC reported 42.2 million gallons of sewage spills, which is an average of 10.5 million gallons per year or 28,800 gallons per day.

Colburn’s bill would create a $1 billion remediation fund to address the sewage spills, the charge for which would be created yearly by the Montgomery and Prince George’s county councils.

The bill is called Montgomery County and Prince George’s County Fair Share Act of 2014.

“It’s everybody’s Bay and we all want to clean up the Bay,” Colburn said.

Welfare Payout Statistics That Will Make You Really Angry

Now, don’t tell me that welfare recipients aren’t innovative! No reason to stand on your feet waiting to get your check. Just put your flip-flops next in line and go back and sit on your ass. What a great country!

With all the talk about unemployment benefits and welfare, it’s important to understand just how much money we’re talking about.

In 35 states, welfare, housing assistance and other benefits pays more than a minimum wage job, according to a new study by the Cato Institute. The study also found that in 13 states, the payout is more than $15 per hour.

Of course, this study doesn’t take into account that not everyone on public assistance receives all of the programs. But if they did, their payout would be significantly higher than even a starting teacher’s salary in 11 states or a computer programmer in 3 states.

The states with the highest welfare payouts – more than $20 per hour – are Hawaii, with payments equaling $29.13 per hour, DC at $24.43 per hour, Massachusetts at $24.30 , Connecticut at $21.33, New York at $21.01 per hour, New Jersey at $20.89 per hour, Rhode Island at $20.83 per hour and Vermont at $20.36 per hour.

Defense Secretary Hagel Plans Pentagon Cuts That Would Take Army To Pre-WWII Levels

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Monday that the Army must shrink to pre-World War II troop levels to preserve funding for elite counterterrorism operations and maintain the cybersecurity programs needed to counter threats by emerging rivals such as China.

In the first major strategy proposal put forth by Mr. Hagel since he took over as the Obama administration’s defense boss a year ago, the former Republican senator outlined a wide-ranging restructuring of the Pentagon budget over the coming five years.

Comments Worthy Of A Post At Election Time 2-24-14

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "County Executive Rick Pollitt Filed TODAY For Re-E...":

10:51...well, answer my questions then. How do you supply services....schools, more police, roads etc. to a county with a growing population with a restrictive measure like the cap to keep from having the money to supply the services. How do you attract businesses with roads and schools in shambles. How???? I am NOT a democrat, I am a republican but I also am smart enough that it takes money to do the things that government is supposed to do. Where is all the fat that VOICE talked about??? Find another county around with the population that we have that has a budget as low as ours. Stop the name calling and be part of the solution. You can't do it. You all have your worn out phrases but have no real solutions to the problem. The county doesn't have a spending problem, it has a revenue problem.....2:32....look at the total operating budget and look at the population. Look at how many schools we have to maintain, students that will fill them and the number of miles of roads. Tell us how to keep our house in order to attract the businesses that we all need to come here. Why don't you all start putting forth some real solutions instead of bantering and name calling. It speaks a lot to your character.

ANOTHER:

We all know that the Council at that time mad a very bad decision to raise taxes that much. What got the county into trouble was the unwillingness for previous councils to realize and act to raise taxes, which got the county to a point that a large increase was needed. When in the previous years of that bad decision did the county ever raise taxes measurably? Voice made a knee jerk reaction and we are living with the results. How are the things that you...yes you as a main proponent of VOICE, working out? We have a county that has schools that are falling apart and roads that are doing the same. The cuts that the state passed down made the perfect storm. My your own admission, income taxes are not a large part of the budget because of low incomes. Does that mean that we all don't still need the services that we expect local governments to provide? Super right wingers like Joe Holloway and Bob Culver that are NO people are like the councils leading up to the one that made the bad decision for failure to act responsibly. Acting responsibly is realizing what government is supposed to provide and making sure that they do it. What are Joe and Bobs great ideas to get business here? Do they realize that business looks at the community before deciding to invest in it? If the community is unwilling to invest in itself, why should a business? Let's hear ideas...let's hear about all the fat....let's hear how well both of your ideas are working for you. Our County is in such good shape thanks to a revenue cap and executive form of government. That is what is pissing you off. Truth hurts don't it?

What the Austin Police Chief Said In the Wake of the Viral Jogger Arrest That Had Him Apologizing the Next Day

Austin police chief Art Acevedo apologized Saturday for a controversial remark he made earlier while defending the controversial actions his officers took against a jaywalker Thursday.

In a widely-circulated video, Austin police were seen detaining and ultimately arresting Amanda Jo Stephen, 24, after she crossed an intersection at a red light while jogging. Wearing headphones and sporting a pair of toe shoes, the 24-year-old initially failed to obey orders from an officer after he saw her jaywalking.

Acevedo appeared to trivialize the viral arrest Friday, defending his officers for their actions and contending that what they did wasn’t too bad, considering the things other officers from different departments allegedly do while on duty.

An early draft of state-appointed Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's plan called for city pensioners to receive $4.3 billion in payments and bondholders about $1.1 billion during the next 40 years. That draft also detailed plans to help pensioners keep more of what they are owed by using state and private funds to protect against the sale of city-owned art at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

"My advisers and I have now expended many months in negotiations, including within Bankruptcy Court-mandated mediations, with all classes of creditors to get to this point, and we are satisfied with the progress made thus far," Orr said in a statement. "However, there is still much work in front of all of us to continue the recovery from a decades-long downward spiral. We must move swiftly to emerge from bankruptcy so that the financial distress harming the City can end.

JUST IN: Holder Says State Attorneys General Don’t Have to Defend Gay Marriage Bans

Washington — Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Monday that state attorneys general who believe that laws in their states banning same-sex marriage are discriminatory are not obligated to defend them.

Mr. Holder was careful not to encourage his state counterparts to disavow their own laws, but his position, which he described in an interview with The New York Times, injects the Obama administration into the debate over gay marriage playing out in court cases in many states.

Six state attorneys general – all Democrats – have refused to defend bans on same-sex marriage, prompting criticism from Republicans who say they have a duty to defend their state laws, not just the ones they agree with.

Apple’s Security Breach Should Scare You More Than Target’s Did

Apple’s security protocol breach is nearly as bad as handing your credit card straight to a hacker rather than making them steal the information through the magnetic stripe readers.

The flaw in Apple’s iOs and OS X platforms essentially allows a hacker to get in between the initial verification “handshake” connection between the user and the destination server, enabling the adversary to masquerade as a trusted endpoint. This means the connection which is supposed to be encrypted between you and your bank, email server, healthcare provider and more is open to attack.

Cancer Victim Silenced By Rep. Gary Peters Speaks Out

Democrats attack Michigan cancer victim after being featured in political ad

Julie Boonstra, a cancer patient who was kicked of off her health plan due to Obamacare, lashed out at Rep. Gary Peters (D., Mich.) on Saturday after lawyers for his campaign demanded that Michigan broadcasters cease airing ads featuring her story.

Boonstra, a Michigan resident, was diagnosed with leukemia five years ago. She was recently kicked off of her healthcare plan due to regulations passed as part of President Barack Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which Peters voted in favor of.

After relating her story publicly in an ad produced by the advocacy group Americans for Prosperity (AFP), Peters dispatched lawyers to prevent the spot from running on local television stations.

Gives New Meaning To "Built Ram Tough"!

Now here's a hard core drinker and one tough Dodge truck. The driver hit and sheared off the light post, and then kept driving about 2 miles to a bar, where he stopped for more
Beer!

How impaired do you have to be to NOT notice that you are carrying a stop light?
(I wonder if the light was green?)
The truck was towed about 2.5 miles to the towing yard,
With the light still pinched between the two tow hooks and the bumper bent around it.
It took several good hard pulls with a backhoe to get the pole free.

MICHAEL MANN FACES BANKRUPTCY AS HIS COURTROOM CLIMATE CAPERS COLLAPSE

Massive counterclaims, in excess of $10 million, have just been filed against climate scientist Michael Mann after lawyers affirmed that the former golden boy of global warming alarmism had sensationally failed in his exasperating three-year bid to sue skeptic Canadian climatologist, Tim Ball. Door now wide open for criminal investigation into Climategate conspiracy.
Mann arrest photo
Buoyed by Dr Ball's successes, journalist and free-speech defender,Mark Steyn has promptly decided to likewise countersue Michael Mann for $10 million in response to a similar SLAPP suit filed by the litigious professor from Penn. State University against not just Steyn, but also the National Review, the Competitive Enterprise Institute and Rand Simberg. Ball's countersuit against Mann seeks "exemplary and punitive damages. " Bishop Hill blog is running extracts of Steyn's counterclaim, plus link.

Mann’s chief undoing in all such lawsuits is highlighted in a quote in Steyn’s latest counterclaim:

“Plaintiff continues to evade the one action that might definitively establish its [his science’s] respectability - by objecting, in the courts of Virginia, British Columbia and elsewhere, to the release of his research in this field. Rice Says No Regrets On Benghazi, Leaving McCain ‘Almost Speechless’

National Security Adviser Susan Rice insisted Sunday she used “the best information we had at the time” when she described the deadly Benghazi attack as a spontaneous protest in 2012 — but Sen. John McCain wasn’t buying it.

The Arizona Republican said he was “almost speechless” after learning of Ms. Rice’s comments on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” which marked her first interview on a Sunday talk show since her disastrous September 2012 appearances to discuss Benghazi.

“I’m almost speechless, because it’s patently obvious, first of all, that Susan Rice had no reason to be on the program, she had no involvement in it [Benghazi],” said Mr. McCain on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

Dash-Cam Video Reveals What Really Happened When Cops Arrested Man During Traffic Stop

New Jersey prosecutors have dropped all charges against a man accused of assault, eluding police and resisting arrest following the release of new dash-cam video that proved his innocence.

Marcus Jeter, 30, was facing years in prison and says he would have been convicted had the video not surfaced. Now, it’s the officers seen in the video striking Jeter — clearly not resisting and with his hands up — who are facing face charges.

No, Jeannie Haddaway Is Not Dropping Out As David Craig’s Running Mate

There have been rumors online this weekend, most of them spread by supporters of a specific gubernatorial candidate and an anonymous smear merchant masquerading as a blog (allegedly not affiliated with any supporter of that same campaign), which have been spreading a falsehood. The falsehood, spread in hushed tones as if it’s a conspiracy theory, is that because campaign emails, press releases, and the campaign website all feature banners with just David Craig and not Jeannie Haddaway that Haddaway is dropping out as Craig’s running mate. The truth is much more innocuous.

If you’ve actually read anything about the way the campaign has been going this year on both sides of the aisle, you know there have been a lot of news stories, and even a lawsuit on the Democratic side of things, related to fundraising prohibitions for candidates who happen to be Maryland General Assembly members while the House and Senate are in session.

That’s exactly what is going on here. The Craig campaign is acting out of an abundance of caution to avoid getting hung up by those laws.

Here’s what a Craig campaign spokesman told me tonight:

It’s because of State Board of Elections requirements on delegates participating in fundraising during session. We will put on the Craig-Haddaway banner for press releases after sine die. If the press releases have the joint banner, someone else in the campaign might use that for e-mail blasts that have a donation link.

Another source close to the Craig campaign points out that the Brown-Ulman campaign is doing the exact same thing. It has to be done because it would be considered coordination.

There’s no conspiracy – just people talking out of their ass with no facts to back up – something that’s all too common from those involved. Maybe instead of spreading lies and libel about people, they should just shut up and get right with God and their personal liability carrier.

Maryland Has Achieved Its Health Insurance Enrollment Goal, Thanks To A Research Error

For months, it looked like Maryland would barely meet, or even miss, the first enrollment goal for its new health insurance exchange. But it turns out the goal was based on flawed data, and the state’s new goal is one that it has already beat.

Instead of signing up 260,000 Marylanders for private plans or Medicaid during the first enrollment period, as was the original goal, the state is only expected to get 160,000, according to a letter the exchange’s interim executive director received from researchers Friday. So far, sign-ups tally nearly 190,000.

It’s a convenient correction for a state that’s home to one of the lowest performing exchanges in the country, one that is so technically flawed that state officials say they might soon abandon all or part of a system that cost tens of millions dollars to build.

US Killer In Israeli Prison Shot Dead In Gunbattle

SHARON PRISON, Israel (AP) -- Israeli special forces raided a prison in central Israel Sunday after an inmate stole a gun, shot several guards and barricaded himself inside the compound, killing the notorious prisoner who was serving time for a gruesome murder carried out in the U.S.

Police identified the inmate as Samuel Sheinbein, an American who fled to Israel after murdering and dismembering another man in Maryland in 1997 and whose case sparked a high-profile row between the two allies.

Police special forces rushed to this prison in central Israel after Sheinbein stole a weapon and shot three guards, wounding two of them seriously. He then barricaded himself inside the compound where a standoff ensued, with counter-terrorism units dispatched to the scene. The inmate then opened fire again, wounding three more guards, before the forces shot him dead, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Worcester County Sheriff's Office Press Release 2-24-14

FROM: Sheriff Reggie Mason

WHO: Maryland Chiefs of Police and Maryland Sheriff’s Association

WHAT: Police Chiefs and Sheriff’s opposing legalization and decriminalization of marijuana

WHEN: February 25, 2014 - 11AM

WHERE: Lawyers’ Mall, Annapolis

Senate Bills 364 and 658 Opposed by MCPA and MSA

Senate Bill 658, “The Marijuana Taxation and Regulation Act,” would essentially legalize marijuana which is now a controlled dangerous substance. Senate Bill 364 would decriminalize the possession and use of marijuana changing Maryland law to enable the possession of 10 grams or less and alter the penalty to a civil offense punishable by a fine not exceeding $100. Chiefs and Sheriffs, representing the Maryland law enforcement community, understand the basis of the legislation but nevertheless are adamantly opposed. Maryland law enforcement executives believe, if enacted, this legislation will have a potentially crippling effect on public safety, highway safety and, most troubling, will negatively impact children.

A wide range of studies and verifiable facts clearly show that the recreational use of marijuana is not only controversial but produces psychological and physical problems particularly injurious to the health of adolescents. Traffic accidents, particularly fatalities, are often caused by drivers under the influence of illegal drugs. Marijuana is notably responsible for an increase in such accidents in states where decriminalization has occurred. The detect ability of marijuana in drivers presents troubling difficulty for law enforcement and prosecution. Legalization or decriminalization of marijuana will also negatively impact our police officers’ ability to detect and interdict other illegal drugs which surely hurts public safety and may contribute to violence and other crimes. These are just a few of the many reasons why marijuana decriminalization is bad public policy and injurious to public safety.

Collectively, as partners who represent Maryland law enforcement, and as advocates for the safety of every citizen and visitor of Maryland, MCPA and MSA are opposed to SB 364 and SB 658. We invite members of the media to discuss this legislation and learn of the negative impact should it become law. Please join us at Lawyers’ Mall in Annapolis on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 11AM.

Army historian says report on deadly Afghan battle was altered to absolve faulty gun

Survivors of bloody battle report M4 jams

A former Army historian who chronicled the infamous Battle of Wanat in Afghanistan, where nine U.S. soldiers died after their M4 carbines jammed, tells The Washington Times that his official account was altered by higher-ups to absolve the weapons and senior officers.

M4 critics have long pointed to the Afghanistan battle on July 13, 2008, as evidence that the rifle’s design was flawed. They cite reports from soldiers on the ground that their guns overheated and jammed that day.

But the gun’s supporters have pointed to a single sentence in the official Wanat history issued in 2010 by the Army’s Combat Studies Institute at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. It blamed the gun’s sustained rapid fire that day, not its design, for the malfunctions.

“This, not weapons maintenance deficiencies or inherent weaknesses in weapons design, was the reason a number of weapons jammed during the battle,” the sentence read.

Maryland Announces $20M In Utility Bill Help

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O’Malley has announced $20 million in additional help for low-income Maryland residents to pay higher utility bills from colder weather.

The governor announced Monday the assistance will be made available to all income eligible households that apply for the Electric Universal Service Program in fiscal year 2014.

The administration says households that have already been approved for assistance as of July 1 will see the benefit automatically post to their account.

Applications are still being accepted for residents who qualify for the program but have not yet applied. The supplemental benefit was made possible by a higher than anticipated award from the Federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and an increase in proceeds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

3 Things You Don’t Know About Obamacare That Could Hurt You

Nearly one in three Americans have little familiarity with Obamacare, and the ramifications are playing out in the media. Since each day brings headlines highlighting Americans who are surprised by changes in their health care situation because of President Obama’s signature achievement, The Heritage Foundation compiled three Obamacare items that might surprise you:

1. Your doctor could be outside the network of your Obamacare exchange plan. This could be true even if the insurer said that physician is in its health care provider network. The California state exchange, called Covered California, has had a systemic problem with this issue. Earlier this month, the exchange pulled its physician directory for the second time because of all the errors.

Since the health plans took effect January 1, many Obamacare enrollees in California have complained that doctors won’t take their insurance, despite being listed as part of the plan’s network. Insurance expert Edmund Haislmaier, senior research fellow in Heritage’s Center for Health Policy Studies, says it’s a combination of insurers rushing to get information to the exchanges and the exchanges not updating their directories quickly enough.

A Letter To The Editor: Improving Salisbury

What is the major difference between Salisbury and all the little Eastern Shore towns that main streets seem to be making it. I will be sending a series of suggestions in the following days that I hope will help.

I have heard all the negative and all the impossible ....so I thought I would give it a go.

The first thing that comes to mind is everything on the plaza needs to be taken out.

No Monuments , no trees in the middle of the street (and I'm a tree lover) and 2 way driving returned.

Every small town on the eastern shore that is making an improvement for the better (such as Berlin) has parking and 2 way traffic.

The monument can be moved in front of a building or set in a much more appropriate place. I myself, would just sell it for scrap metal and use the money to start all the new and wonderful
renovations that I have in mind.

FIFTH MEGA WINDFARM PROJECT SCRAPPED IN JUST THREE MONTHS

Plans for a huge expansion of the world's largest windfarm, the London Array in the Thames Estuary, have been scrapped. The consortium running the project blame the abandonment of an additional 65 giant turbines on "various factors", but especially the requirement for a 3-year study on the potential impact on birds. The Thames estuary site is a designated environmental Special Protection Area.

The decision represents a major blow to the coalition government's renewable energy goals. Not least as it is the fifth major UK windfarm project to be scrapped or scaled back in just three months. In November 2013 the Atlantic Array, a project for 240 turbines off the North Devon coast was scrapped. That was followed in December by the abandonment of the 300 turbine Argyll Array due to "uncertain costs". Since then plans for 350 turbines covering two windfarms off the Lincolnshire coast have also had the plug pulled.

Obama’s News Police

The Obama administration is planning to send what critics characterize as government spies into the newsrooms of the nation’s media outlets.

This unprecedented assault on Americans’ First Amendment freedoms is part of the Community Organizer-in-Chief’s political war against the few pockets of media resistance he has encountered at Fox News and in the world of talk radio. Sending federal bureaucrats to meddle in newsroom affairs by conducting an alleged “study” will chill news coverage and make government-licensed broadcast media think twice about airing stories that place the Obama administration in a bad light.

Uninsured Patients Get Better Care Than Insured

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – According to a recent study, severely injured patients are less likely to be transferred to a trauma center if they have health insurance.

Researchers from the Stanford University of Medicine found that patients with insurance are less likely to get the best care than those who do not have insurance. They found that insured patients taken to non-trauma hospitals were 13 to 15 percent less likely to be transferred to trauma centers than uninsured ones.

“Insured patients may, ironically, get worse outcomes because they are taken care of at a center where there’s a lower volume of resource for critically injured patients,” Dr. M. Kit Delgado, a former Stanford emergency medicine instructor, and the study’s lead author said in a press release obtained by HealthDay News.
