(TNS) — On the first day of a new school year in the midst of a pandemic, tens of thousands of students will likely be left behind, unable to show up Tuesday to greet their classmates and teachers on a computer screen.
Despite efforts by Baltimore-area school systems, students who lack internet access or a laptop won’t be signing on to the live online classes, their only opportunity for instruction until schools reopen. And they aren’t likely to get connected quickly.
The Maryland Department of Education has no reliable data on how many of its approximately 900,000 public school students lack access to a reliable internet connection or computers. Neither do many school system officials who say they’ve spent the summer attempting to reach disconnected households.

Wicomico has Definitely failed. This is unacceptable. Obviously the techs are not doing what they are supposed to do or don’t know what they are doing. Been to school three time to get fixed. Still no good. And zoom that worked yesterday does not work today .

The online stuff is honestly really stressing some kids out and it's only week 1. Some of these teachers are coming at these kids like the kids know how to navigate all this stuff. Well guess what? Some of us are good parents and haven't had our kids spend their entire life in front of a screen. My elementary school daughter is stressed AF with the Zoom, Google Classroom, Kahn Academy, Mentimeter, Kahoot, Google Slides, Google Docs, Clever, Nearpod, and PowerPoint she has been asked to deal with in only TWO live days online. I am working during the day so I can't oversee it and some of these teachers are doing way too much with technology and not explaining how to do it. GTFO Wicomico County. Put these kids in classrooms.
Sounds like you are the problem just by the language you choose to use in your comment. I seriously doubt that the teacher is “not explaining how to do it.” My children are in elementary virtual learning in Wicomico County and their teachers are explaining and showing the kids how to use these programs. Most of these programs the kids have used before at school. Like you said, it’s day 2 so give virtual learning a few more days before spitting out your negativity. I am sure your children pick up on your bad attitude and reflect that towards their teachers which isn’t going to help.
Cost of educating kids per county look it up. Wicomico $14,882, Worcester $18,472 in 2019. Send me my voucher. I live in Worcester County and I could send my kid To Worcester Prep for that kind of money.
All property tax payers in Wicomico County should get a property tax rebate on their property taxes since a good part of our taxes go the the board of ED and they are basically not working this year!

Didn't Hogan brag about money going to the counties for high speed internet? I think WiCo got 100k or something like that. I am sure that will just go to a newly created job to assess the lack of broadband in our area. We have DSL, with 3 students, I for one will not hold my breath for any chance of high speed internet in my home.
Worcester County: parent of 2 children near me says she doesn't have internet and is waiting until 9/28 for her kids to start school as HERS have all ready been "invited back" on that date. So, if you are a Worcester parent banking on your kids returning to school 9/28, and maybe have taken some sick or vacation leave to just get through the next few weeks until then: I assume if you haven't received your "invitation" yet, you can FORGET it. Better come up with Plan B

Until the lawsuits start. There is a school already being sued for unequal education. Apparently being taught in class is not equal to being taught at home. You guys can keep blaming the teachers but the lawyers are running the show. If they stop all the lawsuits, things would be so much better.

This has been a sh** show. HS Week 1- zoom hacked multiple times, chaos ensues, teachers crying or just sitting and watching. Power point hacked, some , NOT ALL , teachers are not at school teaching as they are supposed to because they have their own children and want to put them first. (Too bad we don’t all get that option and even if we did we are not TEACHERS) One of my kids teachers was 35 minutes late in first day to a zoom she scheduled. Second day Same teacher claimed to have “ connection issues” , third day did a short class then announced everyone needs a “mental break” and cancelled zoom instruction for today, start over next week. 2 other teachers doing great and totally engaged , 1 is at least trying and the one I described in detail should turn in her resignation because she doesn’t care at all. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen, and i for one am waiting. This is bs and these kids are going to have ptsd from all of this. Teachers had instruction over the summer for this technology but kids didn’t get any at all, iPads are issued and that’s great but they don’t know how to use all of these programs so they are struggling. Put them back in the classroom!

You must be one of the teachers of which they speak, overwhelming kids with too much too quickly with inadequate explanation. News flash- not everyone is good at teaching online, and not everyone is good at learning online.
