A Viewer Writes: Delmarva Price Gouging

Good morning Joe,

I am sure with everything going on in our community as this corona virus seems to get worse and worse that you have also been out shopping. I thought it was so nice to see so many of our people out supporting small local business and finding what they need as well. I have been to many stores looking for cheese and some other things. I found myself in a state of absolute disgust when I was at the deli at pecan square off of Nanticoke rd and they are selling a pack of hot dog buns for $5 and a gallon of bleach from Holt keep in mind for $12. Then have the nerve to put themselves on Facebook as they are helping the community... no they are hurting us right now. I am absolutely ashamed personally I will never spend another cent in the place but I feel the entire community needs to know that is the kind of people they are at the deli at pecan square. Just wanted to pass on this small bit of information. I have seen some other people posting on Facebook about it as well so I am not the only person that noticed. Thank you and please stay safe in this time of need.

Report them and they will be forced to make amends. It's the law. Do nothing, and you may as well be condoning their actions.

Anonymous said...

It's important to remember who acted right and who acted wrong. Keep receipts so you don't forget after this is over. It will be more important than ever to support those that supported us, and let the other greedy bastards fail. Karma is a bitch.

Anonymous said...

i don't go there anyway but if that is what they are doing, they are scumbags.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they're just dumping their inventory to cover all other lost expenses... I mean it's easy to accuse someone of something without understanding their motive.. But most p think with an employee mindset instead of an owners... If you dont lime the price dont buy it, pretty simple...

The Chinese virus is mainly spread by TDS and trolls hoarding toilet paper...

Agree 100%! I just wonder what their business license allows?

We went to Walmart yesterday and thought their prices were higher as well.

They told me that (Maryland) is going into lockdown tonight.

Anonymous said...

Then go to the big box stores, they have plenty of those things at lower prices.
Regardless; it's called supply and demand. Not everything is "price gouging".

Anonymous said...

I so agree. I saw this morning Deli at Pecan selling eggs. 2 1/2 dz for 8.99. Really people, how greedy are you. People are suffering and you are price gouging your neighbors that support you. I see it from several businesses and I will never support you again. You are disgusting individuals and want to cry and moan when your business declines because of downtown renovations. Why can't you keep your prices the same, you see a pandemic and your eyes light up with dollar signs. Shame on you!! Kudos to Fratelli's for looking out for the kids with a free meal. Greed on the Eastern Shore has arrived!! Again. SHAME ON YOU. I hope the Governor shuts you all down.

Jim said...

To the OP - take some pictures of that, because you know that they are going to deny everything. And thank you - we need to shame the heck out of these people for price gouging.

Anonymous said...

Food Lion too. 12 pack of coke NOW 6.00$ Usually 3 for 10$.

Anonymous said...

I think they are just a hardworking family that is trying to survive. This is a terrible time and they prob have a lot of money in inventory and the bill is coming due. Let’s lay off on hard working people. If the price is too high just don’t buy it.

Brenda Griffith said...

Covering their loss?? Their motive appears to be self centered, in a time when we need to come together and help each other!!! Guess I know where I'll not be going after this is over.

Anonymous said...

I heard from someone that a 'pharmacy store' in Princess Anne near the Food Lion was selling 4-roll toilet paper packs for about $9 and little electronic thermometers that would usually be about $13 for $40.

If you see it, remember it and tell all your friends. And tell the store manager too-- tell him to enjoy that little bonus profit, because it's going to cost him dearly.

Unknown said...

I've seen the same thing in a lot of stores in Wicomico and its a shame. Even the discount stores are inceasing their prices by .50 to dollars on things that were only under a dollar just last week.

Anonymous said...

Send the ass back to there own country. We need to support our people not them. That is not helping our locals Steve you are wrong and we will not support you

Anonymous said...

There is no need to gouge people now. Your staff has been reduced. You still have the inventory so why are you gouging people. Your overhead has been reduced. You are part of the problem and people need to stay the hell home. Don't support these morons and don't forget when things are back to normal who the price gouging businesses were. Support local, what a joke! They sure are supporting us, NOT. We live in a sad society of self absorbed, money hungry idiots. I agree, I sure do hope Governor Hogan shuts everyone down today!!

Anonymous said...

I dont feel like that is price gouging. When resturants buy these things they buy them at slightly higher price because it cost the company that is selling these things. They have to pay their drivers. They have to pay for fuel. They have to pay for maintenance for trucks. Im most of you dont understand that. Somebody always wants something for nothing!

Anonymous said...

I saw let's black ball all establishments that are gouging. Post it on here and get the word out. I agree, don't buy it!!

Anonymous said...

Price gouging is illegal. Contact Attorney General Frosch and report this; Deli at Pecan (if they are in Maryland) will pay the price. So sad that for what ever the rationale for raising prices a vendor would take advantage of a critical time.

Anonymous said...

WHEN THIS IS OVER THEY CAN KISS THERE BUSINESS GOODBYE POS.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 9:24 am. All of you complaining about the higher prices do not understand economic conditions in time of crisis. For example, if we had a hurricane and a lot of houses were damaged, it's important that the hardware store raise the prices of plywood for instance. If not all the hoarders who don't necessarily need the plywood would buy it up and then the ones who really needed the plywood to repair their houses wouldn't be able to get any. Those who would really need it would pay the higher prices because it is crucial to them. This is why you have all the empty shelves right now people who really need the product can't get it because the hoarders bought it up at the regular price. Anybody who's complaining here can disagree with me but that is the reality of things it's not necessarily greed.

Anonymous said...

Signed the scumbag OWNER.

Anonymous said...

I resorted to Acme but it was hard to tell since they are typically more expensive for the same things walmart sells.

Overall tho and from my receipt it seems that prices are increasing.

On a good note they are very busy restocking their shelves.

Anonymous said...

It is price gouging when you double if not triple the original sale price. They are selling their inventory they already have. People just want fairness. Taking advantage of a world wide epidemic. I don't know about you but I find this repulsive and unacceptable. No compassion for your fellow neighbor.

Anonymous said...

At the last comment made at 10:22 am.
Clearly you are an intelligent person commenting on this post.
You are exalt right!!! Prices for MEATS, eggs. Bread etc for the Deli and Pecan Square ARENT as cheap for them as it will be for food lion or Walmart!!!
God people grow a damn brain!!
And, they don’t have to go buying these foods, they do it to help us get what we CANT FIND AT THE Coria infested bigger chain stores anyway!!!

I saw older people THANKING the owners for supplying this stuff for them at a quick “in and out” more sanitary experience! I saw people RELEIVED to not have to park in a huge parking lot and just pulling up curbside and getting their food!
They don have to do this.... trust me. They have made out just fine with the restaurant end because they are. STAPLE to this neighborhood...

How can the originator of this blog live in peace trying to cause war within her town??
It just shows the caliber of person she or he is... shame on them.

Report price gouging or any other scam to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline: (410) 528-8662 or via email at consumer@oag.state.md.us Take a picture also.

“Post it on social media and contact those establishments to let them know the frustration. Because right now, it's very difficult for everyone, and I don't think that we should be taken advantage of,” Jennings said.

Violators face up to a $10,000 fine for each infraction.

You have heard by now OBX is closed to all non residents and all beach house owners - well I have rented a beach house which I probably won't be able to use. There are promises of a refund (right). I would rather reschedule. Getting to the point of price gouging. When I first heard of OBX closure I checked the calendar (and price) of moving to May or June. I know those dates would be more expensive (in season). About 400- 500.00 more. A day later I checked availability again and guess what (you got it) the price for the same week - $1,000.00 more. Owners hoping renters will reschedule so they feel the need to raise the price. Why not just move the renter to another date without raising the prices. Guess we'll alot more will happen? Sad

I will NEVER darken the doorway of Deli at Pecan Square again! You now see the owner does not give a fat rat's a$$ about the community that supports him in good time. He turns his greedy back on the community when the going gets rough. He is all about money and screw the people who have made him and his business a success. Well, no more, buddy boy. You have cut your own throat. Please people, do not give the Deli at Pecan Square another cent of your hard earned money. He doesn't deserve our business. There are too many honest and respectful places to eat in and around Salisbury. He shunned us in bad times, now we shall shun him in better times. Bye bye, Deli.

Anonymous said...

10:22 is right.
I'd look up the price for a gallon of Holt Chemical bleach, but they're closed for the duration and their website isn't functioning.

The two and a half dozen eggs they're selling are about 29¢ per egg, not much higher than the $2.79 per dozen eggs from the grocery store, about 24¢ per.

Of course, if you come into the restaurant, they'll cook an egg for you and charge 75¢ (while most places charge at least twice that.) That's the calculated cost per item to cover business costs and allow for a small profit in a competitive market.
And don't forget to leave a tip!

When restaurants and every for-profit business buys an item it's with the expectation and need to sell it a reasonable markup.

Pepsi 12pk is on sale @ Food Lion this week (3/$10). I guarantee that FL is not price gouging!

There is a specific amount a business can raise prices before it's considered price gouging. Not. Sure exactly what that % is, but they are clearly wayyyy beyond that.

I don't know where you get your eggs but you better shop somewhere else. I just saw on Deli at Pecan Facebook page, "Kindness". What a laugh I got. Wake up people!! Don't give in to these bussinesses! We are enabling these businesses to take advantage of these unfortunate circumstances.

I've been going there for years.
They are decent hard working family and they support the community in many different way.

We meet there the first Saturday of each month for the Men's prayer Breakfast and I usually go there at least a couple times a month for lunch or dinner.

They helped with my rehearsal dinner for my Son's wedding and did a fantastic job and the food was wonderful!

I went there yesterday to buy some eggs and Chicken to support them. I consider them my friends and they need our help and support during this difficult time.

We should also support all our local businesses both here and on the shore.

They need us more than ever!

price gouging...thats hilarious. Its a restaurant not a walmart- ever notice how groceries are at least twice as much as a grocery store? You pay for convenience and if you dont like it dont buy it.

11:41 Good try, Steve. It is also hard working families that keep you in business only to be taken advantage when things get tough for us. It's just as bad for us as it is for you! You had your hayday, and now you can kiss it goodbye. You best join the mens prayer group cause you're gonna be praying for business when things get better. You have taken advantage of the community during their worst possible time. Remember citizens of our community......... STAY AWAY FROM PECAN DELI when we all recover from this terrible time. Let him see that we are not the backward, illiterate bunch he thinks we are. He has ripped us off good and proper.

If you have a private business, it should be legal for you to raise the price on any of your products to whatever level you want. If people don't want to pay that price then they don't buy it. But what you want to do is have the government Force people to do the will of the mob. Wow, you people really are pretty stupid. I bet you're the same people that are afraid to eat at Chinese restaurants too.
Price gauging (in Delaware at least) is increasing the price of a product by more than 10% during a crisis when your costs have not increased as well.

Frankly I have never heard of this deli, but their cost are going to be much higher than a global corporation like Walmart. It's all about quantity. They will go through fewer hot dog rolls in 25 years than Walmart does in a day. If their costs are higher their prices will be too. Unless you can prove they have raised their prices more than 10% in the past 2 weeks, all you are doing is causing more potential hardship for a small business and in turn your local economy and yourselves.

Also saying the government needs to cap gas prices at $.89 per gallon forever is the most asinine thing I have ever heard of. Not even considering the fact that it is not legal for the government to do it, it would likely make gas nearly impossible to find as nearly every gas station would close because they would be selling it for less than they paid. Most individual gas stations make less than ten cents per gallon as it is.

And to whoever said that food lion is gauging because they are selling soda for the regular price instead of the occasional discounted sales price, I really hope that for the sake of society that you are still a child and not an adult of reproductive age.

I am certain that most if not all of the criticism comes from people that have no clue what it is like to run a small business. I don't know Steve's motive for selling these items at this cost but as a small business owner myself who is struggling to make payroll and keep my staff employed, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He has likely seen his revenues crater and he is doing what he can to stay afloat. To think that he saw an opportunity to make lot of money is to not think at all. Steve and his family are good people and they do not deserve this criticism. Shame on you all!

It's kind of funny how hidden prejudices can come out when there is a national crisis.

You couldn't ask for a nicer person and family man.
He always greets you when you come in and always says hello.

This is a time when everyone should band together and help one another, and this is helping to support our local businesses and community.

I will continue to do business with him during this crisis and afterward.
I am not Mike, and yes my name is Jeff and I will say I consider Steve and his family to be my friends. The one who would kick a man and family when he is down, not so much!!!!

The worst pricing gouging is by the local gas stations. Wholsale gas prices are nearing 50 cents a gallon. That's right, 50 cents a gallon. Retail prices are usually just 50-70 cents a gallons above wholesale. We are being gouged by almost every gas station right now. Buy from the cheapest station and screw the rest.

Funny none of you are talking about hospitals that have been charging 7 bucks for one tablet of Tylenol or 36 for a bag of saline. This has been going on for years. I also know that Steve has supported local emergency responders for years. The man put some items up for sale and I agree the prices are high. What we do not know is what he pays in rent and utility bills for that location. Maybe he is taking a beating just like the rest of us. If you do not like the prices do not buy it. It is not like those items are necessities and in critical demand. Steve funny how people who do not know about the people you have helped over the years or how you and your family treat all your regular customers like they are family. To those who are talking out their butts this man migrated from a hell none of you have experienced. There was no stores to buy from and death all around. This is a f'ing flu people not the end of times. You are the same people that bitch about Hispanics taking all the jobs lol. America has become a nation of cry babies. The only jobs they take are the ones your children are to lazy to do. Farmers here would never get the crops out of the fields without immigrants doing the work. All of you criers want something for nothing. He is in the food service not welfare service. Bigots and racist make me sick. Good luck Steve hope your wife and children are well.

Supply and demand in a time of crisis is not the same thing when you are describing every day essentials people need to survive. It is illegal. But more importantly it is a disgrace to them as a human being. So many people barely make it day to day on a normal pay check. Now many are not getting that check and you think its ok to take advantage of that ? Self reflection is a thing many people need to do.

Anyone who patronizes Pecan Square Deli after the way the owner has taken advantage of the very people who keep him in high style, should think twice about ever going in there again. He doesn't deserve our loyalty when he sure has none for his customers. There are a lot of nice places around to eat that have a better menu and better food than he has anyway.

Talk about price gouging? Shame on you Jeff Sherr at Apple Drugs for making hand sanitizer 4 oz for $13.00. Why don't you try to help the community instead of gouge us. CVS here we come!

I just wish we were all as passionate about prescriptions and medical as we all seem to be about the Deli. We Americans have been paying anywhere from 58% to as much as 1000% and even greater for meds. Our seniors and the average American has carried this burden for the last fifty years. Have you looked at the price of a new truck these days. I may not agree with these Deli prices but it is minuscule in the grand scheme of things really. My meds run me around 150 a month and that is with Blue Cross and Blue Shield. America needs to do something about the everyday fleecing of Americans. Maybe this Pandemic will open some eyes. These corporations that produce these items have made our politicians rich. They sit there on Capitol Hill getting inside information and millions from various lobbyist. We need to hold government accountable. This so called stimulus money they are issuing is our money to begin with. Have you had to get your car repaired lately it is freaking ridiculous. The gouging has been going on for years and we have allowed it to happen. I am not even about to go into attending a sporting event look at what you pay for a beer and a hotdog. A small bag of pop corn at Regal is seven bucks. It has gotten way out of hand hopefully we have all found some value in being home with our family and friends during this self quarantining. We live in a country where people line up the day before to buy the latest cell phone. I am sorry if I do not see the anger in this Deli thing. I ate there once it was packed but I just did not like the food so I did not go back. What I did see was a table full of police officers so I knew he was giving them some kind of discount. This country is just a shadow of what it used to be. Time to go back to our core values.

I have dealt with the owner of the Deli at Pecan Square and all he was interested in was getting everything for cheap as possible. I was not aware that he was driving a Massarati around town so that explains why he can. Everyone needs help right now and to try to rip someone off by selling items double the price is totally wrong.

Steve, The owner of the Deli at Pecan Square is NOT A GOOD PERSON. so many of you have bought into his BS. I attend the church the men's bible study is from and because they have meetings at that Deli, I can not be apart of it. He preys on young women, offers them money for sex, treats his employees horrible, and has always ripped off the community. You people who support him and his actions are no better than he is. My wife and I loved it when it first opened until we learned just how horrible a person Steve is. We have not stepped foot in there in years and I hope you all see him for his true self, because you won't either.

I purchased ham from there last week and was a bit leery because it was pre-sliced and he guaranteed it was Boar's Head and was sliced that morning. NOT!! Within 2 days it was bad. Never trust a place that doesn't slice or weigh the food in front of you!

Where are you getting these prices. The bleach is 4 gallons for 11.00 or 2.75 a gallon. Hamburger 10 lbs for 39.99 or 3.99 a pound. Pork Barbecue 4 lbs for 24.00 or 6.00 a pound. Boneless chicken breast 10 lbs for 29.99 or 2.99 a pound. Scrapple 5.00 a pound. How is this price gouging.

Gasoline should be 99 cents & No more !! The BIGGEST GOUGER !!!!!!!

Less Demand = More Supply PERIOD !!!!

At 2:54 p.m., you are an idiot. Don't you know that the government makes more on a gallon of gasoline than the private company does? Did a little research and Enlighten yourself.

I hope they 👁️👁️ this because when this is Over they are Toast.

I t was 96 cents in Virginia this week at some locations !!!!

At 11:18 p.m., I paid $13 for that sanitizer. Yes it was expensive but I needed it at the time and you can't find it anywhere else. That's called supply and demand. Get a life.

CVS can't compound drugs or other products. Think of it like a McDonalds vs a made to order restaurant with a chef. This is no different than griping about a $15.00 entre when it'd cost triple that in ingredients to make it yourself at home, and you're using the dollar menu as a pricing reference. Apple doesn't make hand sanitizer at cheaper prices the rest of the year. This is a new one for them and they're scrambling to fill a void while operating under higher overhead than your chinese made commercial hand sanitizer.

This place needs to be boycotted by everyone and run out of business. At a time when people need supplies to do this they should never see another person cross their door. I hope that people remember this long after the virus ends so should this business and anymore like it. I am truly hurt to see those places that are known by this country as supporters of the down and out and those needing help, and history of supporting this country advertising and holding themselves up and don't even reach out to their own elderly, the seniors in Salisbury. It only takes a phone call to someone housebound, and living alone to brighten their day---someday it could be you.
