Let's Look A Little Closer At Governor Hogan's Coronavirus Plan

Interesting how he's left so many businesses open, yet very few people recognize he doesn't want more then 10 people together at a time and they need to remain 6 feet from each other.

I've spoken to some people who have already attempted to file with unemployment and were allegedly rejected by their employer because they have NOT been terminated, they just don't have work at this time. Just imagine how much money the state will have to pony up for unemployment alone.

The money Hogan stated yesterday set aside to help EMPLOYERS is practically NOTHING in the overall scope of the losses. I am shut down. Fortunately on my end we can afford to be closed, hence why we are NOT competing with other local businesses selling food and alcohol to go. However, don't think for a second we too aren't losing tens of thousands of dollars a month. I wish we could do more for other businesses but we are doing our part by remaining closed for now.

Please don't take my losses wrong. I feel for ALL of the thousands of local people/employees currently out of work. Heck, I've even thought of opening a hand car wash just to give some people work. If you have any other ideas don't hesitate to mention them in comments.

Many people are asking, will schools reopen. Here's what I think a LOT of you don't understand or haven't grasped. Today there are over 30,000 people infected in New York. While our numbers are much lower at this point, they should be, for now. However, all it takes is ONE kid, ONE teacher, ONE custodian and the virus spreads like there's no tomorrow. THINK, how often did our children come home with a cold, flu, lice and then WE got their symptoms. This virus is no joke. We learned yesterday that the virus lasted 17 days on a cruise ship. Scientists are still learning. Schools at this point have not been disinfected. We would be playing Russian Roulette with our children if they did in fact go back to school.

STOP acting like this thing is over, it's NOT! Follow Italy and France. REMEMBER that we are three weeks behind them. We have a very long way to go before we can see some relief. We must keep our distance, (social distancing) in order to stay ahead of this virus. Hogan is doing his best to allow us to act like responsible adults by doing so but let's remember, 17 days it could last on a shopping cart handle. Up to two weeks before you feel symptoms, New Yorker's and other residents from other states coming here to break away from their infected areas coming to their secondary homes on the Shore. Again, we are a long way off from this thing going away.

Wash your hands AND FACE regularly. We've been taught to cough/sneeze into our elbows. Don't forget that those germs bounce back into our faces. Everyone is talking about their hands, wash your face often as well. By the way, we cough into our elbows and then we're being told not to shake hands and instead elbow bump. DUH! The virus lasts longer in CLOTH.

I look forward to your comments.

Completely correct we'll know how good or bad this whole thing is going to end when it's over and it only takes one to make it move dramatically to one ending or the other.

This is not intended as a back-handed compliment. But I must say that while I find that you are often one to over-react and blow stuff out of proportion, you are 100% on the money here, Joe! This is going to be a looooong ordeal. And we're only in the beginning stages.

I live in Sarasota Florida. This morning I went to Costco and the line was around the building at 0800 hrs. Don't panic - it was the seniors who could get in at 0800. They were not 6 feet apart nor wearing masks. Don't know if was a new crop from New York.

Joe, your comments about schools is absolutely correct. That is why I believe that the remainder of this 2019/2020 school year will indeed be “cancelled”. Schools and homes are not set up for remote teaching and learning. In fact, if they were, why not simple create a permanent “public” home school program. No need to waste money maintaining existing or build new schools? Just close them and kids can turn on their computers each morning and attend school from home. Teachers could then teach from home. What a great concept and think of the money savings? Of course, that’s going to happen. What will happen is every public school student will simply be required to repeat their current grade in the 2920/2021 school year. That shouldn’t be any big deal. You can’t expect to just “push” kids into their next grade level having been out of school for 6+ months. I know teachers, the WCBOE and local and state elected officials read your blog so, with my comment, I’ll bet they are thinking about this option. May be an interest topic for your readers.

The schools need to step up and make hard decisions and be transparent about it. The private schools have been up and running since day 3, and we have heard nothing from the public schools. I do not have a senior, but if I did I would be more concerned about them then the rest of the school population. Maybe they could concentrate of them, get them to graduate thru an online program, and then concentrate on the rest of the students.

Perhaps before bashing the schools about Not Disinfecting you should call them for some clarity to find out what has been happening in our schools.

Dear readers,

There is a state board of education meeting today, and I would expect a press release
from MSDE shortly after that.

If the schools are going to be closed, and I totally understand that, I hope they are putting something together to help keep the kids on the proper curriculum path while they are out. I mean, televising or remotely teaching, anything would be helpful at this point. I understand that we are scrambling right now because this is an unprecedented event, but I hope we can learn from this and try to find a way for kids to recover what they are not earning and put a contingency plan together for any future event like this.

Thanks Joe, for thinking about those other businesses that cannot afford to close. I look forward to stopping by when this is all over.

Everyone stay safe!

I don’t think anyone is bashing the schools. I think we are looking at all the “REAL” options that are immediately available that can offer Wicomico County’s nearly 14,000 public school students (and let’s ignore the number of Maryland’s entire public school enrollment for the moment) an option that will ensure an uninterrupted continuous education. And at this immediate moment, there aren’t many options.

And at the head of the table, we have Allan H. Kittleman who lost his election as Howard County Executive to African American Calvin Ball.

The crybaby got appointed to a cushy 12-year job by RION Larry paying $146,000 per year for 12 years.

"Hogan appoints outgoing Howard County executive to the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission"

"The job requires confirmation by the Maryland Senate, and it comes with a 12-year term and annual salary of at least $146,000. Kittleman will begin work after he leaves office Monday"

It looks like Allan Kittleman has a habit of being appointed to free jobs. "Kittleman and was appointed by Governor Bob Ehrlich (R) to fill his seat in the Maryland Senate."

To answer your question 9:17, NO, there isn’t an immediate plan in place to help keeping kids on the proper curriculum path while out of school. While setting up a remote classroom for the teacher may be easier, the problem is setting up the remote classrooms at home and assuring that the student(s) with parent supervision, logs into school each morning and remains attentive throughout the entire day. Good luck to that. Having been associated with a local “public” school system, I can tell you that “maybe” 25% of Wicomico County students have the means, work ethic, desire and parent supervision to make this work. Another 50% of students will loose interest by week 4 and will ultimately fail this school year. And what about the remaining 25%? You know, the trouble makers in Wicomico County schools, the thugs with parents that have absolutely no parenting skills? They simply won’t participate and will fail.

This school year needs to be cancelled and every public school student in the State of Maryland will need to repeat this entire school year in 2020/2021. Again, this shouldn’t be any big deal.

Italy isn’t the best example to compare ourselves to. They have one of the oldest populations in the world and 90% of their deaths are people over 70. They also don’t have the healthcare system in place that we have. Germany is a better comparison and their overall death rate is one of the lowest because they have one of the highest #s of ICU beds/rooms in Europe,

I agree that the order yesterday didn’t change much. Until the states get serious about citing people for being out, the behavior isn’t going to change. At this point, it needs to be martial law or open back for business and let he virus run its course, because this middle ground isn’t doing anything to slow the spread because people aren’t listening but it’s also killing the economy.

10:01, I understand what you are saying but not trying at all is a mistake. Many kids are at a critical age of learning certain things. I get that they will have to repeat the school year but that doesn't mean that we just shut them down without any resources. I am using ABC Mouse for my son (kindergarten). Delmar Elementary did a good job giving us a packet to follow for where they left off.
Yes some parents are idiots, I get that, and no amount of repeating will solve that problem for their kids. Troublemakers are going to make trouble whether they are in school or not. Do you agree?

So Public School Students will repeat their current grade? Private Schools will not? Because I can tell you right now, my child's school has been sending all the normal day to day work that they would be doing in School. They do their work all day, scan and email to their teachers. It is a Shame Public Schools here can't get it together. VA Beach all teachers are online doing the classes and have been.

But hey, don't you all FELL GOOD now that the Maryland economy might shutter, and on to of all that, THEY PASSED KIRWIN PLAN OF 2.5 BILLION in TAXES???? You all sure are good slaves, some of the best I have ever seen!!!!!!

You can't work, work won't let you file for unemployment, no checks, and no relief bill due to dems putting more crap in the back, as they always do, and so where are you going to get money to pay your bills??? Your back bills???? Oh well, as long as you have that 2.5 billion in tax hikes, that should cover your unemployment situation huh?????

That is just plain lazy and stupid. Then, the idiots criticize others for not doing more, when all they are, are trolls. Keyboard pussies.
Riding Joe's coattails, assuming as much credit for their comment as Joe for all his reasearch, sources, and dedication to starting and maintaining this site. "With my comment, I bet they are thinking of this option." The absolute dumbest statement I've read all week, and there has been quite of a lot of them lately.

10:01, so lets say 25% are dying to get back into a program. Let them. If that 25% includes students without a laptop or internet, then lets provide it to them. I am sure the county could manage a few teachers to get this started. There will be no shame for those who don't, no body will care, they can go on next year. However those 25% are losing out in a big way.
I guess this all does not matter, because there is no plan at this point. Shameful and embarrassing.

"You can’t expect to just “push” kids into their next grade level..."
Um... Some kids have been "pushed" to the next grade level for decades.

"I know teachers, the WCBOE and local and state elected officials read your blog so, with my comment, I’ll bet they are thinking about this option."

That is the dumbest sh!t I have ever heard. For one, kids need supervision, oversite and discipline. Who is going to do this for each student? What parent is going to give up a full-time job so that they can stay home with their child to make sure they get their schooling done. Or maybe the taxpayers can just foot the bill for a 1:1 adult/child ration to make sure the child gets his proper education, breaks and lunch.

Again, this is the dumbest sh!t I have ever heard. But if it makes you feel better that is just fine by me.

Signed: An elected official reading Joe's blog.

I would rather they sneeze into their hands and then go wash their damn hands with someone opening the door and turning the sink on for them. They use a paper towel to turn the sink off and to open the door to exit said bathroom. The paper towels should be self-dispensing as well. If a paper towel is not already hanging please turn the knob to expose the next towel before washing your hands.

And to you dirtbags that handle your little noodle to p!ss, flush the toilet and then open the bathroom door with your same dirty hands without washing your hands, SHAME ON YOU, YOU FILTHY PIG!!!

3:00PM, you are a part of that upper 25% I mentioned in an earlier post. The problem is the public schools do not have an immediate plan and the equipment in place to start remote teaching to the nearly 14,000 students enrolled in Wicomico County schools. Keep in mind that equipment needs to be in place at the student’s home and read to go. It’s those remaining 75% of students who will lose interest in 4 weeks and who’s parent’s will become overwhelmed and those students and parents that simply won’t bother or try. My wife and I had 3 kids in the public school system, all in different grades. Hard to imagine the supervision that parents (or a single parent) would need to play in ensuring their kids maintain their studies. I commend your attentiveness to your studies, your work ethic and desire to succeed. Again, you’re in that upper 25%.

Make decisions on online school or not. Make a decision on closing, make a decision on the remainder of year.

About the ideas they have, perhaps someone in our community can help facilitate and idea.

Private schools have been teaching online since day 3.

How can you force my child, who is a senior, to attend 12th grade again next year? He has already taken his SAT, scored well and been accepted into the college of his choice and into the major of his choice. A better option would be, consider this their summer break. Return when possible and run school until August. Give them a couple of weeks break and then start the next grade. It will still impact seniors as they will have to be on their college campus early, especially those playing sports for a university.
