NEW SIGNAL NOW OPERATIONAL ON WESTBOUND US 50 NEAR SALISBURY

Maryland-T Configuration Will Improve Safety, Access at White Lowe Road Intersection

(October 3, 2019) – A new US 50 (Ocean Gateway) traffic signal is now operational and will improve safety and access at the White Lowe Road intersection just west of Salisbury. The new half-traffic signal directs traffic along westbound US 50.

The signal is part of a Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) project to convert the intersection to a “Maryland-T” configuration. The reconstructed intersection also includes a new merge lane onto eastbound US 50, conversion of Stanton Avenue to a right-turn only intersection and a restricted median to eliminate cross-traffic.

These enhancements will enhance safety at the Wicomico County intersection by eliminating median queueing, cross traffic and left turns from Stanton Avenue onto westbound US 50. The new signals at westbound US 50/White Lowe Road will facilitate safe access onto eastbound US 50.

Maryland-T configurations enhance safety by reducing the number of potential conflict points at an intersection. While designs can vary to fit specific locations, a typical Maryland-T on a divided highway will feature traffic signals controlling one side of the highway along with extended merge and turn lanes and median access restrictions.

MDOT SHA awarded the $2.3 million construction contract to George & Lynch of Dover, DE. Approximately 25,000 vehicles travel this part of US 50 each day and volumes are significantly higher during the summer tourist season.

The signal went live on Thursday the 3rd. The flashing yellow to warn of red signal ahead malfunctioned shortly after going live and was corrected shortly thereafter.

The intersection is configured identical to the intersection of Idlewild Avenue and Ocean Gateway in Easton.

Another item to slow down rte 50 traffic!
The better idea would have been to put in an overpass - or close the intersection completely.

I wonder who got pandered to on this one!

Still won't help. Just like the light at 60 ft road.
Idiots are going to be idiots! Should have just closed the cross over.

If only people would learn how to use the merge lane.

MDOT said the same thing about putting up a light at 60 FT Road and RT 50 and that one has stopped very little safety concerns. Just another MD Agency spending money on someone's stupid ideas instead of returning it to the general budget and you wonder why taxes / gas taxes go up. Hogan has done nothing to rein in this wasteful spending.

Omg,

We need to reduce air pollution

Effective immediately, all Route 50 traffic is to not drive more than 25 mph.

Violators will be subject to a 1, 000 fine, 30 days in prison or both.

3:50pm it doesn't slow traffic heading east on 50 as no stop light there. Only on demand for westbound.

Correction to my previous post.

The issue with the the flashing yellow to warn of red signal ahead malfunction may not have been corrected. I have twice had to stop for the red without seeing the flashing yellow when approaching the intersection at the posted 55 MPH speed limit.
