Indiana girl’s cold case murder solved via DNA website

Indiana prosecutors have obtained a guilty plea in the cold case murder of an 8-year-old girl that was solved using a genealogy website.

John Miller, 59, agreed to serve an 80-year prison sentence as part of the plea deal, according to reports.

Miller was charged in July with raping and killing the girl, April Tinsley, in Fort Wayne 30 years ago.

His arrest came after DNA from the crime scene was uploaded to the GEDmatch website.

Those DNA sites are making a full court press in their efforts by reducing the price to $60.The fourth cousin is close enough to identify a perp. The confidentiality clause means nothing.

I don't think that any police agency should be using DNA from these genealogy websites. Did they agree to allow these websites to give their DNA to the police? I bet you will see these cases overturned when the right attorneys get in there.

Before someone says that I am supporting the murder, that is wrong. I did the DNA on a genealogy site and I never gave anyone permission to use my DNA for any purpose other than genealogy.

I am happy that they are solving these cases, but 4:03 has a point. Even if someone did give permission (which he did not) that does not mean that it extends past that person and includes all their DNA linked relatives. This is a tough one to contemplate.
