Troopers Investigating Serious Crash-Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach - The Delaware State Police is continuing to investigate a serious crash that occurred earlier today.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:42 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018 as a 1998 International concrete mixer was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway (SR 1) just south of John J. Williams Highway (SR 24). A 2008 Mercury Mariner passenger car, was traveling northbound in the left turn lane of SR 1, approaching SR 24. For unknown reasons, the Mariner left its travel lane, crossed a concrete median, and entered the southbound lane in front of the concrete mixer. As a result, the front of the concrete mixer struck the Mariner within the left lane of southbound SR 1.

The operator of the Mariner, a 48-year-old female from Lewes was properly restrained and was trapped in the vehicle. She was extricated by the emergency crews and the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team. She was transported to the Beebe Medical Center and later transferred to the Christiana Hospital where she was listed in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the cement mixer, a 34-year-old male from Dover was properly restrained and was transported to the Beebe Medical Center where he was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.

SR 1 in the area of SR 24 was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation.
