End of Daylight Saving Time Means an Opportunity for Increased Crime

Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention Urges Marylanders to Pay Attention to Surroundings
ANNAPOLIS, MD – The upside to the end of Daylight Saving Time is an extra hour of sleep. The downside means longer nighttime darkness when criminals are more likely to prey on victims since daylight often lessens violent crimes. As Standard Time replaces Daylight Saving Time this weekend, the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention has produced a list of safety tips to help keep Marylanders safe as darkness comes earlier in the day.
Research shows a statistically significant correlation between an increase in crime when the time changes along with higher rates of aggression,”said V. Glenn Fueston, Jr., GOCCP Executive Director. “In particular, the time shift results in earlier and longer periods of darkness which can lead to more street crimes such as burglary, thefts, and rapes. Between the hours of 5-7 p.m., most people are leaving work or school and walking to their homes, cars, or buses. The cloak of darkness is an opportune time for criminals who can get away quickly, leaving their victims unable to identify them. The best advice is to be aware.”
Tips to keep you safe:
  • Walk with confidence and purpose.
  • Stay alert and listen to your surroundings; the more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are.
  • Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, and poorly lit areas.
  • Trust your instincts about a person or an area. If you are unsure or feel unsafe, leave immediately.
  • If you feel you are being followed, change course and head for a store, lighted house, or a well-lit area.
  • Avoid distracted walking. Keep your eyes on what’s ahead and away from your electronic devices.
  • Avoid noise-cancelling headphones to ensure you are aware of your surroundings.
  • Travel with a friend if you can and walk to vehicles in groups or pairs.
  • Make sure your keys are readily accessible when approaching your vehicle and always check the backseat before getting in.
  • Carry a small flashlight and whistle to make yourself visible and heard if necessary.
  • Consider downloading a safety app for your phone that sends your whereabouts to trusted friends and family if you are in trouble.
  • Call police immediately if something happens to you or someone else, or you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Add one to the list: Always carry a firearm of your choice regardless of stupid state laws that only protect criminals and restrict law abiding citizens.

I've got a better idea than worrying about who pays attention to our surrounds, let's go back to daylight savings time.

Whenever I see people post this generic comment "just carry a gun no matter what the law says" I cringe. Let me make this short and sweet. I am a huge supporter of law abiding citizens to carry guns . I think that a vetting process to receive a concealed carry permit is necessary however it should not be next to impossible to get one in Maryland. HOWEVER, that being said, I am a law abiding citizen and smart enough to know that getting caught with a gun on your person without the proper permit can and most likely will land you in prison serving what is known as a mandatory minimum sentence and once released it will be illegal for you to even handle a gun let alone own/possess one.

Maryland’s strict gun laws, including making it all but impossible for a law abiding citizen to secure a concealed carry permit, has worked very well at reducing gun related crimes in the state. Wow! What would it be like without all those restrictions? Daily bloodbath? Those laws only effect those willing to obey them. Appears to me you have a significant number of your citizens who are already ignoring your laws and they have no fears of being challenged by experienced and well trained citizens who are denied the right to defend themselves.

Keep cringing, 11:45....
Will you also cringe when you are arrested for posting a letter critical of a political figure?
How about when they say you need permission to travel out of state?
Or when you get arrested and jailed for saying mean things about muslims, or black people or homosexuals??
ALL of that is very possible. Ask some British citizens, who gave up their right to bear arms. And go to jail for things I just mentioned
Carry a gun all the time and NEVER think you need another gun-toting man's PERMISSION. You don't.
That's why Jury Nullification is in the Constitution---- the PEOPLE decide what is right and wrong in a court. Pass all the gun laws you want. CITIZENS on a jury get to decide if they like them or not AND, in the jury room (they HATE this part), the LAW is whatever "we, the people" SAY IT IS..... Not a judge or a prosecutor. "We, the people". The law? A guideline, at best.
I'll take my chances with a jury before I take chances with my life.
AND, I don't give a F what anyone thinks about that.
Just don't be the guy who thinks he's going to be the one to take my gun from me. Could be a problem, my man....
Keep cheering.

Yeah, don't pay attention to the fact the criminals walk around with firearms and your not allowed to by our know it all leaders. We have no right to defend ourselves, but they have armed guards around them. Be aware of my surroundings? Kiss my azz.

"My man"... You obviously has no idea about the responsibility of the jury as far as determining guilt. A jury doesn't "decide what they feel is right or wrong" and find someone innocent or guilty based on that, they are to determine whether or not the person is guilty based on the law as it's written, not how they feel about it. Again, I am 100% pro 2A for those people that know how to follow the law and carry responsibly, however being a tough guy about it on the internet or certainly in real life may not end the way you expect/want it to.

Thugs and hoodlums don't go by the clock, so they don't do their deeds according to what time it is. What the clock says do not have any bearing on them. They are very flexible and can adjust to any time we happen to be on. It would be nice if it was that easy to fix, just change the clocks? I don't think so.
