DeVos: Teachers Unions Have a ‘Stranglehold’ on Many Politicians

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Tuesday said that teachers unions have a "stranglehold" on too many politicians while criticizing the lack of progress on school choice for American students.

DeVos, a longtime champion of school choice in the form of charter schools and private school vouchers, told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo that students need "many more kinds of educational experiences" and criticized the "forces protecting the status quo," the Hill reported.

"We need to combat those, break them, and, again, empower and allow parents to make decisions on behalf of their individual children, because they know their children best," she said.

"Is it the teachers union? What outside forces are stopping us from making the changes required?" Bartiromo asked.

"The teachers union has a stranglehold on many of the politicians in this country, both at the federal level and at the state level, and they are very resistant to the kind of changes that need to happen," DeVos said. "They are very protective of what they know, and they're protective, really protective of adult jobs and not really focused on what's right for individual students."

As recently shown in Wicomico county, the voters released both Normie and Liberal Jim from the teachers' unions! Yes, it took us two tries to get them both - but they needed to go for what they had done to the school system in defiance of the will of the voters!

Unions are the only thing keeping people like DeVos from running our schools for private. Excluding those without the financial means to make it into the best of the best schools. Institutional racism continues. Her family continues to profit from conflict and poverty.

Being an employee in the wicomico school system is frustrating at times!!! We are all about testing and making ever kid fit in the same mold, not realizing every child learns differently, and that having them all fit into the same mold is what’s setting them up for failure, causing behavior issues and making the teachers, administors and counselors jobs that much more difficult!!! It wouldn’t take long for an outsider (especially the politicians making all the “rules”/decisions and not having a real clue what it’s actually like in the classroom!!!) to come in spend about 10 minutes in a classroom and see the issues/problems, because it wouldn’t take them long to see that the education system is setting the kids up for failure.

There is not flexibility in being able to teach a child in a way they can learn and that sets them up for success, being able to teaching them some of the basics that they will also need in the real world, like being able to get along with others, understanding emotions and feelings, learning how to communicate their needs instead of acting out in complete frustration because again they are being asked to fit in a mold that they don’t have the skill set to fit in. Something needs to change for sure, but until we all come together and stop ignoring the big elephant in the room nothing is going to change.

Some of us are in the union out of fear, but at the end of the day isn’t it the unions job to represent us as teachers and not the politicians!!! It makes some want to stop throwing our money away to part of a system that is setting us all up to fail. I mean let’s ask the questions that need to be asked - Like for one what are the union dues really for us as teachers or the politicians? Where does our money really go for / towards???

Let us as teachers stand up for our kids and ourselves and FIGHT for what’s right!!!

Why we have sub-par, failing government/public schools...
1. Generations of teachers and administrators have been indoctrinated NOT educated...
2. Teachers Unions ALL...to include the Experiments tried on our children from year to year that NEVER worked...No more Classical Education; only Socialist/Communist teaching.
3. U.N. Agenda 21/Common Core dumbing down our students/children at an alarming rate and very few speaking out against this.
