$7.55 Million Supplements School Breakfast in 485 Schools
BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has awarded $7.55 million in State funds to 485 schools selected to participate in Maryland Meals for Achievement (MMFA), an alternative breakfast delivery program that provides students with free, in-classroom breakfast.
The funds supplement the federal reimbursement that schools receive through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s School Breakfast Program. In School Year 2018-2019, 258,984 Maryland students will benefit from this program. Of the 485 schools participating, 26 schools will be participating for the first time due to an additional $650,000 provided by Governor Hogan in the Fiscal Year 2019 budget.
Schools are selected annually by MSDE based on eligibility criteria, previous participation, preferences of the school districts, and the amount of State funds available. Maryland law also requires the selection of schools to represent geographic and socioeconomic balance.
Alternative breakfast delivery models, such as the MMFA, increase students’ access to a healthful morning meal. Additionally, recent legislation allows participating middle and high schools to serve breakfast in the school building through Grab and Go kiosks while still requiring students to consume the meal in the classroom.
School administrators credit the MMFA with improving student test scores, behavior, attendance, and well-being. Parents praise the program for assisting children to prepare for their academic day.

Why are we as taxpayers responsible for feeding these parasites? Don’t the parents bear some responsibility for feeding these uneducatavle slugs? As a taxpayer, I’m tired of handouts to these leeches that don’t appreciate any of our efforts to raise them out of their sorry existence. Have we become so indoctrinated and desensitized after so many years of government treating them like protected species that we don’t see what is happening to our society and culture? Please wake up and rebel against this nonsense.
This is a good program, but SNAP benefits should be reduced to the recipient to prevent double-dipping. Even though this program is working, reducing the double benefit will increase accountability to the SNAP program and the families who participate in it.
Not a fan of this at all. At what point do the parents take responsibility for feeding their own children? Is dinner next?
lovely! hogan wont be happy until they are all put up at the ritz with free rooms service! what a rino pos!
i do not like seeing a child go hungry, with that said. Most of these families already get food stamps. Why do they need a free breakfast and lunch to? Now the ones that should get that free breakfast and lunch are the ones that have a single parent taking care of them but have a job and dont qualify for food stamps, the ones that work hard but fall thru the cracks. I am so tired of my tax dollars propping up a bunch of dead beats. I bet if they were all cut off they would all find miracles and all of a sudden are able to work. Many that get assistance are plain out lazy and just are not, will not work. I have had to work my way thru this life and these losers are no better then i am. If you are getting assistance then you must not be allowed to have any more children, If you try to have another then you get cut off. End the babies make extra in those food stamps and check. If you cant take care of what you have then you must not be permitted to have more. If you cannot have doctors verify that you are not capable of working then Get your lazy behinds out and find a job! enough is enough
My issue is that I feed my kids at home, only to find they are required to also take a school breakfast. Most of the time it's sugar junk. But they have to take it to keep numbers up for funding. BS.
So much of that food goes straight to the trash cans. Way too much of what's actually eaten is sugar laden and sugar covered, with a sugar crash coming just in time for lunch, when it's all repeated for the afternoon crash.
