Maryland leaders, it's getting so that this is on you for not doing something about this dangerous intersection, e.g., protecting us from ourselves. Do your jobs!
It’s not the intersection. It’s the impatient idiots that won’t wait to cross over. If they are in that big of a hurry, they should have left home sooner.
I drive Route 50 at least 5 days a week for work - I have been doing it since 1991 - I HATE THIS INTERSECTION!!!! You would not believe the accidents or near accidents I have witnessed and almost had - thank goodness I have not been in any serious accident - but I have had at least three close calls - one morning I literally felt the hand of a high power guide me when a car pulled out right after another car had crossed - they must have thought it was a light - it was probably the most scariest driving experience of my whole life - and I have been driving since 1982 - this is an incredibly dangerous intersection!!!! And yes, I did see that accident this morning.
I can not comprehend how anyone with half a brain has an accident at this intersection. You can see down the highway for what? 1/2 mile? Can someone explain how you get hit here? What is causing driver confusion?
Problem is with the angle of the intersection, the people trying to cross route 50 have a blind spot on the "A" pillar of the car. The "A" pillar is the piece on the front windshield, passenger side that comes down from the roof to the dashboard. A quick glance by the driver and an on coming vehicle is in that spot and blind to the driver. The driver thinks it is clear and pulls out. Result is an accident. I guarantee the first words out of the peoples mouths is something like "I didn't see you". That's why there is a sign "LOOK AGAIN". The only answer is re-do the intersection and put up a stop light.
If people’s A pillar is the problem then they need to adapt to their vehicle or get something they can see out of. As for the angle of the road it is just like 9:13 and 11:07 said the intersection is as plain as can be with a view at least a 1/2 mile. Maybe people need to stop blaming the intersection and realize it’s moron drivers and impatience causing the accidents. Plus you only need to look one direction, it is not that complicated!
11:13, I think that one is the "B" pillar, but yes, it is in the right looking line of sight at the angle one is stopped there. Rt. 50 traffic comes through there in waves created by traffic lights up the road, more prominently on the eastbound side as the last light is closer than the one in Berlin for the wesvtbounders, but waiting for the break in traffic does make crossing there easy as pie. I think a J-turn may be in order here, but you are still going to have stupid out there going the wrong way somewhere.
11:13 a stop light is not the answer. It will only create more problems elsewhere. The answer is close the intersection since the idiots that use it won't learn.
God only knows how many times I have used this intersection for many yeats. Never had a problem. Stop look both ways and proceed with caution. Lights not needed. Responsible drivers are.
Most commenters, maybe all of them, didn't get 7:58 AM's comment, which was satire, saying that government has to protect people from themselves at every turn in life.
I thought they were putting a light there? They did put up signs calling for mandatory headlights. That hasn't helped either, but it does give the police a reason to pull you over if you forget to turn them on.

This has been mentioned before a while back. You are correct about the "pillar" but if someone knows it causes a blind spot they should make allowances for it and position their vehicle that it will not interfere with their line of sight.
The lack of driving skills and patience is the cause of most accidents I would bet.
Older people do slow down in their reactions but to issue such a blanket statement is not only wrong, inaccurate, ignorant but just plain disrespectful. Young punks wrongly think they know how to drive, think driving fast is a skill, and even if it were they can't do that right either.
Just because there is a "hole" in traffic does not mean you can or should put your vehicle in it. Stop, look, judge how fast traffic is moving and if you can get your vehicle across in a safe manner. (without anyone having to hit their brakes or change lanes, much less cause an accident)

The allowance made is the sign "look again". If people would do that by the time they looked again the vehicle that was in the "A" pillar blind spot would be visible to them. Kind of simple really if people would just follow directions. The sign is there for a reason.
EVERYTHING that's done through SHA comes from Baltimore. Our local SHA districts have to get in line to get anything done. It's OBVIOUS Many of you don't realize this. Education would help...Yes, it is a dangerous intersection. I agree with the 'blind spot'; but I also say certain times of the day the 'sun' blinds people as well; and then there's the angel and the Impatient people. Many reason's for accidents.
SHA does have this project in line and it should start soon. Again; NOTHING is going to start when you think it should. Out of the hands of the LOCALS.
5:08 it is kind of simple if people would just follow directions. Only problem is 25% of the population are stupid zombies just floating through life. Just go on any website (not just this one) and look through the comments section. For that matter just watch TV and listen to the dribble that comes out of the mouths of supposedly intelligent people. The democrat lady socialist running for congress in New York is a perfect example.
The red light will cause more accidents of less severity mostly rear end collisions look at Walston Switch rd. So the red light crying people need to get off a light is the fix all.

An intensive study is in order to address this.Everyone thinks they have a solution, but this may be more comprehensive than meets the eye.
7:58 we need the government to protect us from ourselves ? That sounds exactly like a stupid Democrat statement.

The only way to fix this is to remove the intersection. You can’t fix STUPID.
The Sha boss needs to be Arrested.
I agree.
8:05 I go through there often, looks pretty plain to me. I don't understand what's so complicated about it either.

The problem is the elderly there attention span is reduced and this is causing the accidents.
Wasn't it approved over 2 years ago to put a light in here? Why has it not happened yet?
Amen to that statement !!
for what???? Not protecting "stupid" was not what he was hired to do.

Come on folks...the problem is the Confederate statues and assault rifles...not people being patient and cautious
I see boc is doing a story on this and calling out SHA .
