Surgeon General Urges More Americans To Carry Opioid Antidote

As opioid-related deaths have continued to climb, naloxone, a drug that can reverse overdoses, has become an important part of the public health response.

When people overdosing struggle to breathe, naloxone can restore normal breathing and save their lives. But the drug has to be given quickly.

On Thursday, U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams issued an advisory that encouraged more people to routinely carry naloxone.

"The call to action is to recognize if you're at risk," he tells Morning Edition's Rachel Martin. "And if you or a loved one are at risk, keep within reach, know how to use naloxone."

Obesity and tobacco combined KILL 1 million Americans every year. 60k die from opium overdose. However when I ask a politician what is the biggest epidemic they tell me opiates.

Totally wrong approach. Manufacture and use of that drug should be a felony offense. It allows folks to get so high they're all but dead the go out and do it again. When that's the person's lifestyle let them go so they are no longer a burden to society in multiple ways.

Not only will I not carry it, I would not render aid if I saw an overdosed loser. I'm not going to catch Hep C to save your life so you can OD again tomorrow. Call that evil, I don't care. They made the choice.

I heard it has a very small shelf life. Then what? Keep buying more? Big Pharma and our government mouthpiece spewing more propaganda for big pharma to obtain more of our $$ because they aren't making enough.

Big pharma created the problem and now they want to profit off the solution to the problem they created by grabbing more $$ out of our pockets.

Anyone that doesn't see this is not very smart.

Gonna go with Jim Kirk on this one...."let them die!".

Believe it or not, if you take the on-line training, and pass, you receive a prescription that is covered by most insurance companies.

This is a very bad idea.. our local Sheriff and the ambulance chief have both told me that people often go berserk as they return to consciousness.. sometimes 3 big deputies have their hands full restraining them. The Sheriff does NOT want his deputies to carry Narcan, especially when they would have to administer it to many of the same people over and over, and have to keep putting themselves and the public at risk responding to ODs at Code 3.

Now let's suppose Johnny's mom or sister gives him Narcan and he goes berserk on them..

4:38-- you are on the right track. I wonder whose buddy is going to get rich as a result of creating such a huge market for Narcan.

Kinda like the flu vaccine.. (it's STILL not too late to get your shot..)
