A Viewer Writes: Royal Farms

Joe, I knew that kids today were not getting much of an education from our local schools but on Tuesday of this week I went to Royal Farms to purchase some diesel fuel for a garage heater. I went inside and asked the cashier for 7 gallons of fuel. She said you mean 7 dollars? I told her no 7 gallons. She asked me how much is it and I told her the sign says $2.80 per gallon. She was totally confused. I told her 7 gallons x $2.80 would be the correct amount. Honestly she could not do the math. I told her just to give me $20.00 worth. I asked her where she went to school and she said she finished high school at Bennett. Joe I guess I’m just an old f—t but even with a calculator she didn’t know how to do the math. This girl was dressed real nice and looked like she came from a nice middle class family, and for those who will scream racism she was white. Joe, the future of our country is really in trouble.

Good thing she didn't have to figure how much change to give you back! Assuming that you were able to fit that extra .40 cents of diesel in your container.

It is not their job to do the math for you. If you want to buy fuel by the gallon go to a full service gas station and ask for 7 gallons. Simple solution is to use a debit or credit card and pump the exact amount you want. Don't be sofa king high and mighty.

Most people just give a dollar amount not gallons. At 2.80 per gallon it's 19.60 or around 20. The math is easy, but without a calculator at a busy convenience store, I don't think I could be johnny on the spot with that calculation either without a calculator. I would just round up and say 3.00 x 7 = 21.00 Working in retail, I know the public can be difficult. When I go into a store and ask for gas, I would just say give me 20 dollars worth. You sir are a jerk!

A young lady came into our office one day for an appointment. A few minutes later, she came and asked me what time it was. I pointed to the clock on the wall because I was on the phone with another customer. She looked at the clock, had a puzzled look on her face and finally turned her cell phone on. She had no clue as to how to read a non digital clock!

Its not just RoFo, its everywhere.
if you give a cashier change after they enter any ammount into the cash register most of them are lost

It's that stupid 9/10 of a penny that made it confusing. BTW, who goes into a Royal Farms and orders gallons, and not a dollar amount? If she DID the math, and did it correctly, there would be .3 cents to be accounted for. What about your math skills? You were a difficult customer, and did not order your product in a normal manner. Don't blame the clerk, or the school she attended.

Anonymous said...

The sign didn't say $2.80 a gallon. What about the 9/10ths of a cent? Your math (or reading) skills could use some help, as well. Where did you go to school?

I'm an old f--t too and even I know you can't say she's white.

And for those that for even a moment, should consider this fact that the dumbing down of generations is something other than strategic design by a domestic enemy, then you are in fact just as ignorant as graduates that cant count. These generations are purposely kept ignorant not just of basic knowledge and skills but just as important about God, History, power and corruption. If we do not seek out and destroy the enemy within or education systems then our future is lost.

So sorry for this young woman but the issue would be more about not being taught and pushed through by the powers that be. Some are just not good at math but even with a calc? In 5 years time maybe she will be the manager of the same store. Sad future.

It sounds like she might have been new at the job and didn't know how to put gallons into the pre-pay machine. Usually people ask for $XX worth, not gallons.

Ever hear of rounding up? He was not a difficult customer and nothing abnormal about ordering a "product" in the manner it is for sale, per gallon. Why don't you people stop making excuses for people's ineptitude? This young woman is there to perform a function, adding items prices, collecting payment and returning change. She quite simply could not perform that function even with the help of a calculator. I am not condemning her. She needs further instruction that she obviously did not get at her school before being allowed to graduate. This customer went there with a container that held a certain amount and that's what he ordered and he should have been able to receive it without doing the calculations for her.

I get where the guy is coming from, but common man, seriously??? .40 fucking cents???? Not to be a dick to this guy but you could have just went with the whole 20 to begin with, or said the actual amount you wanted... I wouldn't leave it up to them to figure it out, not for a second... Furthermore, it is technology that is making people stupid next to common core, but you all love your phones though right? As you walk into polls with yuor face stuck in the screen....

You clowns need to understand that everyone is good any different things, and just becasue you can do something they can't, doesn't mean they are stupid... I can do calculus, but not in my head since it has been 10 years and you forget what you don't use, but can you do calculus in yuor head??? NO, then that must make you stupid based on how you all think about others... What about not being able to swim??? Because you can't swim, does that make you stupid????

OMG...I can't believe the people defending a High School Graduate that can't multiply

Anonymous said...

Hey Old Fart,

It is apparent and obvious that you are the one with the issues. Who does that? Who goes to a cashier and demand they solve multiplication equations?

You should have stated the dollar amount you wanted to begin with, it's not their job to do that for you. If you're so smart, why didn't you figure it out? When you said just give me $20.00 worth, it shows that you couldn't do the math either, idiot!

Not only that, you felt it necessary to write to a blogger about what an inconsiderate idiot you are! As my accounting professor would always say, "That's wrong with the world today." You. You are real piece of work. Now go back out and scream at the kids to stay off your lawn! Schmuck!

Anonymous said...

On behalf of the older generation, I'd like to apologize, as that "old fart" has no common sense.

I'd bet the cashier could do the math, she was just shocked someone would ask such an asinine question. Or perhaps she thought she was talking to Allen Funt and was looking for the hidden camera.

You see, that old fart is the type of person who goes to Taylor's BBQ and orders two ribs.

Or goes to Thrashers and says "I'd like 17 fries please".

Or to Fisher's and says "I'll have 22 popped kernels please".

Is today "Big Block of Cheese Day" on the blog? How else to explain this post.

I just think it's funny how people go to a convenience store and expect the 5 star treatment. I worked in one when I was in college. People treat you like crap all day long and expect their low budget rear ends to be kissed. I fully get what the person who wrote the article is saying. But is your life so bad that you have to call out someone who is at least working for a living. Well Mr. Perfect think back on your life to everything you have done. Was it perfect? Were there times in your life you may have been overwhelmed and screwed something simple up? Liberal's have ruined the schools in our country. They don't teach the basic skills for the students to function in the real world. The Libs want them stupid and dependent on the Government.

So at 2.80 that wasn't the issue. My point is she didn't know how to multiply 2.80x7

Anonymous said...

Wrong. I have never heard of anybody trying to buy fuel by the gallon

Anonymous said...

If you can't do decent grade school math, what are you doing working at as a cashier for?

Anonymous said...

Since this guy is so smart, I'm surprised he didn't just go in and say "please give me $19.60 worth of gas." Of course, when he went to pump and came up just short of 7 gallons because it was $2.80 and 9/10ths per gallon, then he would have self-righteously marched back in there and started yelling at that poor cashier and made everyone else have to wait while he had his hissy-fit, just because he had a chip on his shoulder that day. That being said, yes the school systems suck, but this is a very poor example of an attempt to demonstrate that.

Anonymous said...

I have been to a gas station many times with my 5 gallon red plastic gas can and asked for 5 gallons of gas. And, no, that other .40 cents probably won't fit in there, either! It is a cashier's primary job responsibility to be able to do the math either with the calculator on a phone or countertop or in one's head no matter what color that head is.

Why don't you all get that?

Anonymous said...

Who orders gas by the gallon?

Thank you 10:59. I was exhausted reading these simple comments. The old fart even stated he was NOT picking on the employee. Thank you old fart for stating a pure fact about today's society. The post wasn't about the girl, but about how students are not prepared in school today. And I'll go on to ask what do we expect from school with conduct so far out of control. May I add, the last resident of our White House did not help one bit, but set us so far back it will be difficult to return from whence we came.

I lived in Middleburg VA and if anyone knows anything about Middleburg it is the home to the extremely wealthy. Still a lot of full service gas stations around there and they tend to ask for gas by the gallon. Same at the deli counter. They would order 20 slices of cheese, 30 slices of ham. At the seafood counter they would say 4 pieces of fish. Never ask for anything by the pound.

Anonymous said...

There is no shortage of rude people, as that customer proves. Rude, and oblivious that he is rude, like most other assholes. Orders 7 gallons, Geesh! He knows the clerk can only set the pump for dollars, not gallons. As for the old fart that only learned how to use a calculator, I bet that clerk is immensely more educated in the use of computers than he is. Heck, I bet he couldn't even use the register she was operating. What a dolt. She is way smarter than he is. An he is stuck in the 20th century.

I wish it was that old fart's daughter that someone else was chastising for their own shortcoming in not knowing how to order a purchase of fuel. I bet he would feel differently. I guess he thought she was supposed to go out and pump it for him. If he didn't know how to order fuel, I'm surprised he knows how to use the pump, if he does. And WTF does her looks have to do with his "complaint?" That old man is just a jerk. If he had asked one of my daughters where she went to school, they would have told him, "it's none of your business creep."

As a former employee of a full service gas station at Hensler's Auto in Pocomoke, when going to highschool in the early 90's, I feel like I can put this to bed with some expertise on the subject.

First, the only full service gas station left on the eastern shore of MD is on Race St. in Cambridge. This is the only place where it would be acceptable to ask for exact volume amount, rather than price. This being that an attendant can be present to pump the requested amount.

I can only think of one other reason to request a specific gallon amount rather than price. There are still places that you can get propane tanks filled on demand. That's about it. I recommend Camden Petro. Very good prices.

These two occasions are the only times where it makes sense to request specific volumes and not dollar amounts.

The author of this post needs to move to, or move back to New Jersey or Oregon. Only then would the obviously older person, get the service they are expecting, which ceased in most places in the early 1980's, back when a guy stood out by the pumps with a stack of bills to stop the pump or add a solution to leaded gas engines.

This "author" is an angry, unabashed and unapologetic dinosaur. I will never claim to be a professional gas "nozzler," but I bet I have more experience than any poster on this thread.

He obviously thinks he is at a service station, but this is actually what's called a convenience store. HUGE DIFFERENCE. I believe that is his first failure. He then insults the clerk by demonstrating he cannot do multiplication and therefore insults an innocent person to build up his ineptitude.

To further compensate for his inability at an erection, losing his "business," or just being another liberal moron, he had to write to someone, three days later, who could provide a forum that can "potentially pat him on the back," given this site's recognition of the ineptitude of some Millennials.

My final thought, if he is a business owner, there is no way in hell that he is paying cash for gas. This person, forgive me for referring to the poster as he and for all the quotation marks, has been full of it from the get go, or just can't help to constantly lie. A bitter coward with a lot more time on his hands than any employer of over a dozen people should have. Probably the Shell station owner from across the street? Whatever, I just believe the poster is truly what's wrong with the shore and most definatly not the solution!

There is no predisposition that fuel must always be ordered by the dollar amount.

You are the one that doesn't get it. The man's a jerk, and can't do the math himself. And he has lots of experience to go with HIS HS diploma, if he has one.

KC Sr is an uneducated fool himself. He expects a convenience store clerk to do the math that he can't do. And then he complains about the type of education he ASSUMES she has. He can't be a bigger jerk or fool. He has no basis for his complaint. Just an old crybaby.

KCSr.. “Thinking is difficult, that’s why most people judge.”

That's what America is all about. Someone figure it out for me. talk about the high and mighty. People are going to rip her blind. What is wrong with our .Schools

Anonymous said...

Lol sounds like you just want to complain. You've never had a day where you're not on top of things?

lol wow these butthurt teachers still making excuses. lol. I would be embarrassed too if I was the one responsible for this cashiers fail

10:07-This writer does not have your level of comprehension. We used to have idiots coming in asking for a specific # of gallons instead of a dollar amount. They become agitated when a clerk has not encountered such a dumb thing like that before. They most likely have never conformed to anything in their lives.

LOL to funny

She should have told him that will be $19.66 and 3/10 and then watch the old fart figure out what he was going to do.

Self-Reliance? A better tomorrow exists when we treat others as we would like to be treated. Friend, do your own math and try to be kind to yourself when you eventually don’t know the answer to a seemingly simple question.

You are exactly right! And of course the arrogant (but stupid) old fart would ask why everybody hasn't heard of rounding up, or down. But if this asshole really had to have only 7 gallons, and that's all he wanted to pay for, he couldn't get it without that .3 cent. He would get a little more, or less fuel than what he was demanding. The funniest part of his whole story is the fact that he himself coundn't do the math that he accuses the clerk of being unable to do. That old goat is as stupid as they get. He can't even purchase fuel without getting into an argument.

Cut the girl a break. It's possible the way her register is set up, she can't ring up a sale by the gallon. Maybe ROFO doesn't allow cashiers to just punch in amounts in their registers.

Let's look at this from another side. Here's a young girl who is accustomed to handling her job a certain way. Then she gets a customer who requests something 99.9% different than how she's normally required to handle things.

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I was that age and had someone staring at me expecting me to do something a different way than I've been trained and how I normally handle day-to-day work, I'd get flustered, too. I might even "forget" how to do a simple math calculation with a calculator.

I equate it to someone looking over your shoulder as you do something you've done hundreds of times. All of a sudden, you're all thumbs. You can't type, you forget how to spell.

Doesn't make her stupid. Doesn't mean she didn't get a good education. You can't tell from this ONE episode.
