In North Korea, that rice cooker is a persons prized possession. Sad to think, I know. And NBC celebrates fake cheerleaders. But Asian students keep their own customs, some of which we find really strange. To him, using a vending machine is probably weird.
7:09 They have vending machines all over Asia and they are so sophisticated that you can pay with your phone. They are years ahead of the US in mobile technology.
Never understood why people want/need a rice cooker. Rice is the simplest of all food to cook. 2 cups water, 1 cup rice, pinch of salt. Bring water to boil, put in rice, reduce to simmer, wait 20min done. Optional: 1 TB butter, onion flakes, adobe seasoning, parsley flakes, etc.
Why do you need one more appliance on the counter to create clutter?
"Never understood why people want/need a rice cooker..."
Because few people in North Korea, Cuba, etc. have access to a range/cooktop/hotplate/burner. For many people the rice cooker is the only electrical appliance they have.
I like my rice cooker. Add rice and water, close the lid, push the button for what kind of rice it is, walk away. Come back in a few minutes for perfect rice, every single time. For some of us old folks, it's a lot safer than boiling water on the stove top.
