5-year-old boy suspended after school claims he made bomb threat, parents say

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A 5-year-old was suspended from school in California for reportedly refusing to take his backpack off, and telling a teacher he had a bomb inside the backpack.

Jackson Riley was suspended for one day from Great Valley Academy for the incident.

The kindergartener reportedly told one of his teachers there was a bomb in his backpack, which would explode if he took it off.

“So, they look in his backpack, and my son’s 5 years old; obviously there’s no bomb in my kid’s backpack. They called me at work and said, ‘There’s been an incident at the school.’ They told me everything that my son said, and they said, ‘You need to come pick your son up, and this is going to be a one-day suspension,’” Riley’s father said in an interview with KTXL.

The school sent Riley’s parents a letter saying he was suspended for his intent to “threaten, intimidate or harass others,” but Riley’s parents said the code applied to students in 4th through 12th grades.

Okay, we are at day 13 or so at school this year. Where did this kid get such an attitude about taking off a backpack and where did he learn to threaten with a bomb? Is that what he learned in 13 days at school, or is that what he hears at home 24-7?

And secondly, why is there such a confrontation between a teacher and student to enrage the student to make such a threat?

Both sides need to decide to NOT let these children become the next generation of Antifa.

Parents apparently haven't taught the kid much if he thinks this is acceptable behavior. Yes, even from a Kindergartner.

But if he'd made a "clock" he could have gotten a free trip to DC

7:36 I agree he is getting the attention of a threat though he might not understand it, his actions were over heard or talked about at home and maybe parents let him hear too much news. The worst fear is suppose the bombs could be real bombs sitting at home and he could pick one up and possibly put in his back pack, children pick up loaded guns at home and accidently kill someone all the time now.

I am this young mans father, and I am happy to answer any questions or concerns that people may have, regarding our situation.
As I probably will not get notifications from this site if there is a comment, people may email me at iankhop@gmail.com

I would just like to clear a couple of things up though, as most of the articles give a very shortened version of what has happened. My son was pretending he was a super hero, and when it was time to stop playing and take his backpack off, he didnt want too, and said he had a bomb in it, and if he took the backpack off, it would explode. The teacher asked him if she could look inside, and he said yes. She did, there was no bomb, the backpack was removed.

People seem to think that we, as parents, are absolving him of any wrong doing, and we most certainly are not. We had a very stern conversation with him about following his teachers directions. We also then had a conversation with him about what words are, and are not safe at school.

Our issue is not with the teachers. They are outstanding, and have done wonderful things with our children. Our issue is with the administration who at first, had a hard time finding an education code to suspend him under, and used one that only applies to children from 4th grade through 12th grade. When we raised an issue with them that A. the code does not apply, and B. he is 5 years old, it is far to soon to be marking a childs permanent record, when they are only 3 weeks into his first ever school year, they changed the code to terrorist threats, and informed us that THIS is now what will be on his permanent record.

Again I encourage anybody with any questions, to please send me an email, and I will be happy to engage in civil conversation.

Have a wonderful Thursday,
Ian Riley

Ian,

As the owner of SBYNews, thank you for making your comment and clearing the air on this matter. ANY parent clearly knows this child didn't have a bomb. I publish such articles in the hopw that comments will call them out on just how ridiculous the Mainstream Media can be.

Keep us posted, Joe
