Man becomes Marine after he was told "you'll end up dead or in jail"

"See the thing is; my ROTC teacher told me I was gonna end up dead or in jail. I grew up without a father figure in my life. I wore most of the same clothes from middle till I graduated. We were on food stamps and lived in the hood. Those are circumstances that I did not let dictate my life. I did not become a product of my environment. Some of my friends called me stupid. Now look at me. I became aware that I control my destiny. I became aware that I could be the Man that I was intended to be. I became aware that there was only one branch that could build me into a Man. I became a Marine!"

Proof once again it can be done. Life does not have to be so desperate, there are opportunities. This young man will see the world and be better for it. He will have responsibility and a sense of purpose. The best part is he will have an opportunity for a better lire when his service is done.

The Few the Proud the Marines! Turning boys into men, and teaching to live life at a higher standard. He worked hard and he has earned the title "U.S. Marine".

Our military have been recruiting in lower income areas since the ending of the draft. Thousands of great stories just like this young man - where an opportunity to LIVE exists.

Unfortunately there are tens of thousands of sad stories where this type of choice "LIFE" was frown upon and the unfortunate consequences that resulted.

Nothing wrong with our military. Its still a respected job, still have an adventure and at the conclusion MOST will hire you over a thug ANY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you knew the truth about why this country goes to war you would never sign up for the military. Don't get me wrong if we were ever invaded I would fight side by side with my neighbors for this country. I will not however be ordered to some third world country to shoot poor people based on a lie our Government and Media fabricated so that their greedy SOB friends can set up shop there stealing the natural resources and shipping American jobs to slums where the people have to work for pennies a day. I think that kid could have joined the Cryps or Bloods and the leadership would have more integrity that the scumbags that run this country.

A couple of years of Military service should be mandatory in our country like in other countries. It would do a lot of good for certain types of people.

Congrats young man you made a fantastic choice. You can be a shining example to the ones in your hood that were too stupid to control their destiny the joke is on them. keep up the good work.

I agree with you 9:42 , Every resident in Baltimore , male or female should be forced to serve in the military. This could be a program that could give the blacks a fairly decent name again. Of course it would be hard after the obama brain washing of our nation.

Not just anyone can "join" the military like years ago. The military seeks the elite so to speak with the physical attributes as well as mental capacity to critically think and carry out objectives. The age of "ground pounders" is over. I know, I am aware of a situation where a young man tried to enlist and couldn't pass the math aptitudes.

Wonderful story! This young man didn't blame others or have the victim mentality. This is a true man making a choice to rise above his circumstances. We need to hear more stories like this on tv , Facebook, so the younger generation can see it is possible. Everyone needs to experience a boot camp experience in school, outward bound or the military. Bring back the draft! Learn about respect, hard work, how to work together as a team and discipline!
