OCEAN CITY — After gaining assurances from the promoter on certain controls, a divided City Council this week reversed a denial of liquor sales at OC BikeFest and will now allow mixed drinks to be served at the event.
Last week, OC BikeFest officials appeared before the Mayor and Council with a handful of requests related to a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the town for the annual event in September including a desire to add liquor in addition to beer and wine at the weekend-long events at the Inlet. The request was denied last week after a contentious debate involving the virtues or evils of alcohol in general in the perceived family-friendly resort.
In the week since, the city received an email from event promoter Kathy Michael renewing the request with a handful of controls in place. For example, OC BikeFest would only serve limited types of liquor in carefully measured amounts of one-and-a-half ounces with an appropriate mixer. The drinks would be poured by certified bartenders with strict identification checks and no shots would be allowed.

Purple Moose lost the fight.
The OC sales tax on alcohol is 9%. I guess they realized they could tax a $1.50 can of beer or an $8 cocktail. Revenue is revenue...
Great leadership council. Short term $'s instead of safety. Real chickensh#t move.
Bring your own.
Call "Bikefest" what is really is! "Boozefest" bikers and booze what a great mix. I stay clear of O.C. during this event, not a positive event.
Yeah, because nothing goes together better than liquor and motorcycling.
Sure there's a few that over indulge just like any normal weekend in OC, but this is the largest grossing weekend each and every year in OC. With very few problems for OCPD
Bikers For Trump!!!
Enjoy yourselves brothers!!
The 9% tax goes to the state not OC
I can't believe the council let this group of noisy thugs. arm twist them. I guess behind closed doors they were scared to death they wouldn't hold their noise fest in OCMD anymore. That's what this is about. Not the so called family resort image. You don't see Bethany, Dewey or Rehobeth jumping to grab their business. I live in OC and I can tell you 90% of us have to either leave during that week because we cannot sleep due to 24/7 noise or suffer with it. The city council does not care that most locals are against this group's repeat business. They are only concerned about sayisfying the business owners. Liquor is just going to fire them up like crazy and mind you they are on two wheels, screeching, speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, popping wheelies...i wish they would go to New Jersey beaches as most of them are from PA. Thanks for nothing Mr Mayor for your widespread advertising of our MARYLAND beachtown.
