Maryland could catch distracted drivers on video

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —Maryland lawmakers are considering legislation that could lead to videotaping drivers who text behind the wheel.

In the words of the bill sponsor, this technology has a "wow factor," but it also sparks privacy concerns. Supporters want to start with a study to address all the issues.

Susan Yum's crusade against distracted driving is going in a new direction. Her story may sound familiar. Her 5-year-old son, Jake Owen, died after a truck driver distracted by his cellphone rear-ended the family's vehicle. The court slapped $1,000 fine on the man responsible.

Yum successfully lobbied for stiffer penalties with a statute known as Jake's Law.

"What is the next logical step?" Yum said.

Next thing you know you won't be able to take a dump without the government say so, permit and of course you'll have to pay taxes and user fees.

Dave T: Sure, who cares about peoples privacy. It's the "wow factor" that matters. Funny how these liberal hypocrites claim to be such staunch supporters of the constitution on one hand, then completely disregard it on the other. Liberal Maryland, what a joke. I'm embarrassed to live among people who are this stupid! Relocating outta this joint is looking better every day.

Test it on law makers.

Let's fine all the crooks in the government for making these laws for every time they screw up

Those lawmakers that even think about doing this need to be removed!

I'm a right wing nut job that jumped on The Trump Train as it first pulled out of the station. I don't like big government and hate drivers to text while operating their vehicles. How many times do I have to remind good folks that the main job of government is to keep us safe. I support this democrat 100%, did I just say that? As for as privacy, is that more important than life? If so, what the hell are you hiding? This or anything else to help people from texting behind the wheel is great with this nut job. Thanks to the retired policeman for his invention, thanks to the democrat for sponsoring the bill. Sorry for the death of young Jake Owen. A $1000 fine for taking a life, do you believe that? Go for it Sen. Kathy Klausmeier.

Why not just disable manual text programs on phones while in motion? Talk to text allowed - hands free.

You liberals always play the victim or a story of a victim. Why is that? Asking a irrational question to make your point might not be a good point.

I also agree with Kathy on banning alcohol because it kills more drivers then cell phones.

Your a typical oc worker who got arrested for dwi now you will bash cops.

You would be extra safe if the government put cameras and microphones in everyone's homes. Safer still if everyone also had a RFID chip or a barcode tattoo.

Not bashing homey......telling the truth for abnormal speed....sooner or later you will strike another civilian....than there goes your pensions

Stop crying!

Why do some always defend police for doing what the rest of us are prohibited from doing? Then call others names and belittle them for asking questions. It really doesn't help their case in my opinion and drives a deeper wedge into an already divided relationship.

thanks Sir......glad everyone does not support the lawlessness of those who enforce the law with our tax dollars

Let's just do like they do in China. Summarily execute the drivers who break the cellphone laws. Guaranteed to practically eliminate violators. It would positively eliminate repeat offenders. What? Too harsh you say? It you want the big brother state to solve the problem, then don't propose anything less. $1000 fine not enough? How about $10,000? A million? Life sentence? Nothing is going to bring back her son. She wants a vendetta against everyone else for the ACCIDENT that killed HER son. If the risk is too great for being involved in an accident, don't drive the highways, or be alert and defensive when driving. Don't expect everyone to obey the laws, existing or newly proposed. It'll never happen. Escalating penalties have never solved the problem of people disobeying existing laws. Need proof? How has gun control made cities safer? It is the perfect example.
