Md. SNAP Recipients Will Soon Be Able To Buy Groceries Online

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Maryland is one of seven states that have been chosen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take part in a pilot program that will allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants to purchase their groceries online.

The program was announced Monday by Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen.

Three Maryland retailers – Amazon, Safeway and ShopRite – will participate in the two-year pilot program, which is slated to begin this summer.

“SNAP is our nation’s first line of defense against hunger for millions of low-income families and their children,” Cardin said.

NOW the internet is the front line. Better yet, you can play the horses online before placing your grocery order.

Who elected these idiots?

Seen lots of of SNAP users paying for cabs to get home from walmarts before. Might save them some money and less fraud than shopping at the little corner stores that sell them approved items at 2x the price or let them "return" items for beer or smokes.

If 2 MD democrats support it, it's gotta be a bad idea. Run SNAP like WIC and it will be fine. Then, root out the abuse.

Also, this would help some older folks who have to pay a service because they can't drive...the real people who need help...not the users.

Wow now you won't even have to leave the couch
What's next direct deposit so you won't even have to go to the mail box?

The problem is that people who should be on it could benefit greatly from not having to go out. The chronically ill, disabled and elderly....this is wonderful for the helpless. Unfortunately, most people on the system, are not helpless.

awesome, hope fatboys delivers to the hood!

6:29 How is it that you can use a computer or smartphone to post on the internet and not be informed enough to know that benefits are done electronically? EBT = electronic benefits transfer. No such thing as a welfare "check" to get at the mailbox.

I don't know if any of the bureaucrats read this site, but the problem with the welfare system is that there is little incentive to get off it. Why not wean them off of it: make them work or volunteer, and once their income reaches a threshold, DON'T cut them off right away. Slowly reduce benefits so they don't have the incentive to quit their jobs. And MAKE THEM TAKE DRUG TESTS. I've talked to so many people who work in the system who have been saying this for a long time. It's nothing new. The system can be fixed.
It's like me telling my kids: "Get a job and I'll let you pay for your phone, insurance, car payments and school" Yeah, you get the same reaction from welfare recipients.
