Lowe's Cos. is cutting thousands of workers and shuffling the jobs of thousands more, according to people familiar with the matter, as the home-improvement retailer tries to adapt to shifting shopping habits.
The company plans to eliminate less than 1% of its workforce, or fewer than 3,000 jobs, said a person familiar with the matter. But it also will shift many workers' "back-of-house responsibilities and activities to customer-facing ones," the person familiar said, aiming to redeploy them to help answer shoppers' questions about products or home-improvement projects.
The move comes after the Mooresville, N.C.-based hardware retailer in November cut its profit outlook for the year, citing weaker-than-expected store traffic.
"We've got to make sure that as the consumer is changing the ways they engage with us, we continue to be nimble," said Lowe's Chief Executive Robert Niblock in an interview at the time. Lowe's employs around 285,000 people.

I thought home building had increased.
I wonder if the new minimum wage laws had any effect with their decision.
Thanks Trump.....bringing those jerbs back by the millions already...
Heck - here in Salisbury if they cut any more personnel they might as well shut down. Every time I go over there I can't find anyone to help me. I'll go down aisle after aisle and I can't ever find anyone around there to help me.
In the summertime it is hotter than he_ _ because they are allowing the utility to cycle their electricity - and the lights are all turned off on virtually all of their aisles so I just leave mad. The last time I saw a similar action was with SuperFresh -(located off College) - and we all know what happened to them - they are GONE!
Good luck finding support at the SBY Lowe's. They hardly have anyone now.
I go to Ace whenever possible-I can get assistance fast and I don't have to walk two miles for a roll of duct tape.
I can usually find help in Home Depot, I can never find help in Lowes.
I do not shop at Lowes anymore.
Maybe Trump will pay all of these people being layed off to build his Great Wall of America. ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Their website makes it so easy for customers to find and purchase items from other online competitors - ie Amazon. I can see why their sales numbers suck. Imagine the impact on Sears.
With new MD sprinkler laws now in effect - lookout for Lowes in Salisbury, Easton, Pocomoke to close.
I used to try to support Ace until I caught the cashier ringing MY sale up using HER rewards card. Don't believe me? I have it on video.
4:43 Trump does not even have the keys to the White House and you are blaming him. You must be a left O Bla Bla fan.
You sound so stupid.... Sprinklers have always been mandates for years.... MD Sprinkler law doesn't require existing structures to convert. Get yourself educated on facts
I don't believe Salisbury Lowes is going to make it. MD officials are ripe to try and eradicate any concept affiliated with 'private home ownership'. Instead - they want Section 8 subsidized housing and will try and do anything to stymie private citizens in trying to fulfill their lifelong desires. The above poster is right - sprinkler laws, BAT septic systems, mounds, tier maps, regulations, you name it MD has got them.
6:17,right on because it's controlled by democrats.
4:43 It's jobs not sure what jerbs are. Now everything that was in your little affordable healthcare bill will come to light and because of the regulations and taxes more business will downsize but not to worry Trump will do his best with the utter ruin he was left with but you will not here him blame anyone else for 8 years as the current administration has. Last thought, just because President Obama is telling you everything is better doesn't make it true. If you would actually do your homework you would find out how bad off we really are.
5:57 - Get a life! You are so wrong - all Maryland jurisdictions now require fire sprinklers to be installed in all new construction. However, in many MD jurisdictions, if you add a room or addition, guess what, you are going to have to install a residential sprinkler system.
Right now only two States in the union have this law, you guess it, MD is one of them and CA is the other. Who is responsible for this - guess again, one of your own here on the shore, Jim Mathias. Now let's get his ass out of there and send him a real message, DRAIN THE SWAMP!
IMHO Jim Mathias is bad news. I hope everyone reading this post remembers him.
So something that can save your life is bad? Just asking.
6:56 PM - Speak for yourself, look at the States housing starts since this statewide ordinance was enacted. They have plummeted. And as for the poor - especially the black minorities, the sprinkler ordinance costs has taken the american dream far, far and away for these people.
5:57 - It's actually worse than that in AA county. If a person gets a building permit to add an addition - and the addition exceeds a % of the sq. ft. of the house - then the whole house has to be sprinklered. That's TERRIBLE!!!
That's outrageous! I can't believe you should do something to save life and property!

Don't worry about finding the employees, after all even if you found them they don't want to help you at all. I been there several times and found employees and guess what they acted as if helping a customer is a pain even if it's their job.
I agree - they are offended if you bother them with a question.
Lowes Knows .......
