Arizona Amends Education Standards, Adds Cursive Requirement

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona will require public schools to teach cursive handwriting as one of a number of new education standards approved by the state Board of Education.

The move amends the state’s current standards, which are based on federal guidelines known as the Common Core. Common Core has become a politicized topic and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas campaigned on a promise to replace it.

“We now have new standards that have been worked on by Arizona teachers, parents and been vetted by anti-Common Core experts,” said Douglas.

When the Hell did Wicomico County Public schools stop teaching cursive writing and why?

Did you know that the Snowflakes coming out of the Wicomico County Public Schools can't even sign their names on a check or a contract!!

8:46 You can name call all you want if that makes you feel like a big man, but I don't think it was up to the students as to whether or not they were taught to write in cursive. 🙄

It's true they let you print your papers..made me extremely mad as a Catholic school graduate I was very proud of how I was taught to write. Made me so angry they require so little of thier students. Most teachers are phoning it in now days and pushing the kids through.

I'm currently a Junior and I started writing in cursive in 3rd grade. The County gives the teacher the freedom to teach cursive or not.... Not a lot of the new young teachers were teaching cursive back in 3rd grade. I was in the only class.

Doubt that anyone under 25 even has a check to write. Only people I ever see write them are old people holding up the grocery store line. Young people do everything electronically. The last several properties I purchased/sold in the past year, the contracts were done over the internet and were signed by typing your name/initials. Welcome to the 21st Century.

Taught my kids in elementary school how to write cursive they are now 13 & 16. I also have been teaching them the math I learned. I'm not perfect but I taught my kids before school and teach them what I know...I kinda figured it was my job as a parent.

It not about whether cursive will be used-It about actual learning as opposed to memorizing or recognizing. When you learn something you use your senses and motor skills and you are more likely to retain the information. Cursive teaches forward thinking skills because one letter must flow cohesively to the next in a word. It teaches how to integrate visually. It teaches patience and perseverance but valuable life skills.

Hey Obvious 917, of course it wasn't children who made the changes. It was PRIOR SNOWFLAKES (now Adults) who "thought" (insert laughter) Common Core was the next best thing! Simpler styles (i.e., its the 21st century) doesn't get you from point A to B faster in the game of LIFE. Common Sense does! Part of identifying one self is writing ones name. If you can't do that and must rely on automation - we "older" folks feel for our future.

I used to joke that I could write a private note to my wife about the kids and leave it in plain sight, they would never understand it!

Guess what Snowflake!! Not every bill that has to be paid can be paid electronically!! Most contracts are not done electronically either so quit banging on your chest when you don't know what the Fk you are talking about!! I have money and I do everything I can electronically and I am over 25. So Merry Christmas my little Snowflake friend!

It's not your job as a parent you idiot!! That is what is wrong with America. Your job is to educate yourself and then go to the Board of Education and engage in their conversations about your childs education.

You failed your child and you failed America!

2:26 You are part of the problem. I went to the worst school district in MD (somerset co.). My parents both had advance degrees and took the time to provide me with additional classroom time at home year round. I hated it at the time, but today, I am thankful. Parents should invest time and energy to ensure that their children have the knowledge necessary to succeed in life and not rely of just is taught in school. If you just send your kids to school and say that is enough then they will be doomed to the same life you lead.
