A Viewer Writes: Breathalyzers On Planes

A SkyWest Pilot was removed form the cockpit yesterday by TSA agents at Rapid City Regional Airport. He had been drinking the crew members smelled alcohol on his breath. The flight was delayed for 2 hours until another pilot could replace him. Breathalyzers are installed in cars. Why can't the TSA find a way to install in planes?

#1 The TSA cant do it because they dont have the authority...yet. The FAA might be able to make that happen.

#2 Planes already fly themselves while in the air. Not sure about take off and landing but it would not be a stretch to make that a reality.

Large commercial planes pretty much fly them selves as it is now. Pilots control the plane on the tarmac and during takeoff and landing. There is no way they will ever mandate interlock devices being installed on every commercial plane. Incidents of pilots being impaired by alcohol is extremely low.

That's a good point. Being the apprehensive flyer that I am it would be a great idea. About the planes flying themselves that's great. But taking off and landing safely is very important also, I'd like someone who hadn't been drinking to do that please.

Truly one of the silliest comments/questions ever! Breathalyzer!

The system worked; his condition was identified before flight and he was apprehended. His career is over!

Safety sensitive jobs with airlines face pre-employment, and on the job random testing for drugs and alcohol. Being human, some will make mistakes in judgement.

No defense for his actions. Job, career, profession are done for.

1:25 There is always Trailways or Amtrak. Much better safety records than the airlines.
