Ocean City Police Distribute Bike Lights to Violators

OCEAN CITY, MD – : The Ocean City Police Department recently completed an initiative designed to improve the visibility of bicyclist during night time hours. While the number of pedestrian collisions has dramatically decreased over the past several years, bicycle collisions have not followed suit. A prevalent safety issue that the Department noticed was the lack of bicycle lights being used during the night time hours.

In an effort to correct this issue, the OCPD was awarded $800 in grant funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office to purchase 60 bicycle lights which were then distributed to officers certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association as Bike Maintenance Officers. The certified Bike Maintenance Officers then stopped violators that were observed riding their bicycles at night with no front and rear lights installed on their bicycles, most of which were visiting international students.

“Rather than ticketing the individuals, officers educated them on the importance of riding with bike safety lights and installed the lights on their bicycle during the stop,” commented Police Chief Ross Buzzuro. “This was an extremely successful initiative, receiving multiple positive comments from those that were stopped.”

Bicycle lights are essential to remaining safe during a night-time bicycle ride. “It can be nearly impossible for drivers to see cyclists that are not equipped with front and rear lights,” Buzzuro continued. “According to Maryland law, all bicyclists must have a white front light facing forward and visible from the front of the bike, and a red rear light facing backward and visible from the rear. Lights can be either steady or flashing and must be used during night-time hours. Violators can face a citation along with a $90 fine.”

How about educating foreign students on our traffic laws? Courtesy laws are that you move to the sidewalk when a bus shows but too many ignore it.

Good week to do this since the crowd in town is relatively sparse. Inlet parking was plentiful today (Wed) with plenty of open space on the beach. Lots of vacancies too - folks are still going south to get more bang for their buck!

Wonder how City Hall will spin this one!

Use your head, you should do everything you can to be visible.

For the cost of a week in Ocean City, food, drinks, transportation, ect I can stay at an all inclusive resort in Riviera Maya Mexico and not have to deal with drunks, punks, trashy t-shirts, bad music and Sysco food.
I only go for the beach. I won't spend a dime there anymore.

****
That is not a law. Bicycles are suppose to abide by the same laws as other traffic.

One reason for increased bike accidents is there is an ever increasing number of bikes each year and you see more people riding incorrectly both visitors and international students.

The homeless drunks in Ocean City have bikes now.

Recent bike accidents are giving me pause about getting back on mine which I would like to do after being forced to take two years off. Bikes are a little like motorcycles with out engines.

Well now... THERE is one great vacation! Get on a plane, travel for hours, then go to ONE resort; eat at all THEIR restaurants; don't ever leave the compound. Experience the same beach, the same food, the same atmosphere, the same everything.
OR...
Get in your car and go to a resort that offers about 50 or more good, and some great restaurants; to a city with clean, white sand beaches; a beautiful bay that offers all sorts of water sports; take exciting and interesting day trips (Assateague, to see the ponies; Berlin for an old town experience).
Experience your choice of over 50 (again) amazingly different bars - some quiet and intimate, some crazy and full of fun - and even one that is ranked as one of the Top Ten Nightclubs in the COUNTRY (Seacrets - "Nightclub and Bar Magazine 2016").
To each his own. But your idea of a vacation is certainly not mine.
If you want to save money on a vacation, go to, say, Cleveland, and stay at a Super 8 for a week. You'll save a ton of money.

Lights are MUCH more important than those stupid helmets that the STATE mandates that one wears on scooters.
Light 'em up - or get a ticket!

9:06 by spending your money in Mexico you are supporting the drug cartel. The government is totally controlled by criminals. Also you are supporting a country that is assaulting our country with millions of illegal aliens. Your vacation comes with a price.

It is a BIKE LANE. Cyclists are under NO obligation to ride on the sidewalk. Bicycles are prohibited from the sidewalk by State Law

The bicycle officers of the OCPD seldom use lights. Are they above the law?

12:18 AM, certainly they are, don't you know there are two sets of laws in this country?

Now that is a grant I can get behind. Hopefully the concept of being visible while on a bike at night is contagious.

Now the other issue at hand. Ocean city is not for everyone. We rarely go there and we are 15 mins away. If we want to goto a local beach, we goto AI. However I have noticed over the past few years it has become more and more crowded with the type of people I personally avoid by not going to OC. We travel south for our vacations like many. It's cheaper, cleaner and often times less crowded.

More folks are going to "AI" because they cannot afford the prices on the island. Notice how many businesses have left the island to West OC? Rent is mucho less and West OC has become a business boom, not only retail/restaurants, but familiar big named hotels are popping up. City Hall mindset needs to change...even now (10:11am) lots of parking available at the inlet, lots of open spaces on the beaches....Being the July 4th week, you'd think the island would be packed. Last night, very little traffic up/down coastal highway...and lots of vacancies! Guess businesses/rentals love empty rooms/houses/condo's??

I suppose the cities/towns SOUTH (NC and SC) don't want City Hall to change their mindset..so they can keep reapin the bennies!!

Sad!
