Grant creates alternative to jail for opioid offenders

HAGERTOWN, Md. (AP) — Gov. Larry Hogan is announcing a $540,000 state grant to test an alternative to incarceration for those convicted of nonviolent crimes linked to heroin or opioid addiction.

It’s called a day reporting center, and it’s planned for a vacant office building near the Washington County Sheriff’s Office near Hagerstown.

Hogan said in a statement Monday that the center will combine drug-addiction treatment with supervised probation. Offenders who are sent there will have to be employed or actively seeking employment.

Or we could secure our borders, stop having our soldiers in Afghanistan protecting poppy fields, and eradicate the heroin supply. Heroin production in Afghanistan pre 9/11 was nearly zero after the taliban wiped out poppy fields. 3 years after we invaded it was around 25% of global supply and by 2009 it was at a record 94%. Now you know why we went there and why we remain. And remember how heroin use in the late 90s early 2ks was nearly nonexistent? And now its a pandemic. Coincidence? Or the result of a conspiracy? Either way it is real.

The government needs to finally admit that we own our bodies.

I suggest that you change only one word in your comment: "We"

"We" didn't invade Afghanistan.
"We" don't control the poppies.
"We" are not the enemies of the Taliban.

It is the Evil Empire (USA Government) that has done all of those nasty deeds.

"We" People of the US should not be judged by the government that oppresses us and everyone else in the world.

Thank you

Heroin is a fantastic moneymaker! From hiring more cops to jailing work release customers, and employing all the judges and lawyers in between!

CHA- CHING!

Now who in the government would want to stop that money train?

I assume 'non-violent crimes' relate to stealing from their loved ones or others to support their habit.

Hardly victimless!

Very stupid! Now they are still out stealing to support their drug habit! 100 days in jail is a great way to kick the dope!

If they steal, they will be prosecuted for stealing.
Not for using drugs.
Get it?
