After First Event, Trailer Ordinance For Cruisin’ Event Viewed As A Learning Experience In OC

OCEAN CITY — While one single event might not be a large enough sample size to make any long-range assessments, the new ordinance governing parking for oversized trailers on city streets during vehicle-related special events during last month’s spring Cruisin’ event appeared to have achieved the desired results.

As part of the ongoing effort to rein in some of the behavior associated with the vehicle-related special events, including but not limited to the spring and fall Cruisin’ events and Bike Week, for example, the Mayor and Council spent much of last winter working on an ordinance requiring participants to purchase a permit for parking oversized trailers on certain city streets. The idea was borne after a particularly troublesome spring Cruisin’ event last year when residents complained of trailers and other oversized vehicles parked along main thoroughfares and side streets throughout the resort, taking up vast areas of street parking in some cases and causing traffic obstructions in others.

Essentially, the new ordinance allows only those officially registered for the events to park oversized vehicles on city streets. The stickers have to be prominently displayed on the trailers and those “hangers on” not officially registered for the events are not allowed to purchase them. Another component of the ordinance prohibits parking oversized trailers anywhere on Baltimore Avenue.

The new ordinance only allows registered participants to park trailers on public streets from May 1 to Oct. 31 and only after purchasing a permit and affixing it to the trailer. The permits cost $50 and apply only to the event prior to or during which they are purchased. In other words, they aren’t cumulative for the rest of the vehicle-related special events throughout the year.

The news here is O.C. Government money grubbers.
I guess soon if your not properly "registered" ( show me your papers) for an officially sanctioned event on the island and are just there as a
Loitering "hanger on" you may be subject to a "presence" fee, in addition to all the parking sanctions ( don't we already pay taxes for road maintenance?) , flush tax, room tax, entertainment tax, food service tax, automatic gratuity.
Seriously? 7 minutes for a quarter to park a car in a spot you already pay through the nose to fund? If you can find a meter that takes real money!
City Hall needs a hurricane.

I see the Pottsville Fire Department is trying to take advantage of this ordinance. They are trying to get them to come park on some acreage that they own. I don't have a problem with that but they should give that money back to the county since they get a lot of money from the county.

Lots of folks with land outside the "island" promoted an alternative to park trailers than the $50 decal - THANK YOU!!! Still in the stone age eh City Hall - word gets around real fast to circumvent your revenue generated gimmicks. Plus mom nature didn't give you good weather for Springfest or Saturday cruisin did she??? Should never EVER bite the hand that feeds you!!! June Bugs are coming...another group that doesn't bring any $$$$ to the island - but you promote them to come and then gauge the gray beards with bikes/classic cars and loads of cash....your business model is woefully outdated!!!!!

Why don't the mayor and council just close ocean city? Problem solved.

they are doing there best to eliminate the car events. I hope the event promoters tell OC to pound sand and move to VA beach.

Well the idiots that attend the events do nothing but cause harm you doofus 11:23am. They do burn outs and donuts that tear up the road. They speed up and down the road putting citizens and visitors at risk. They run from the cops putting everyone at risk and end up in multiple body parts on the ground. The young punks are a danger to society.

The town of OC assumes that every "oversized vehicle" and trailer is there for the "Cruisers" event. They aren't.
