Charges Expected After 30-Girl Fight At University Prep

Officials Initially Believed Fight Started With Argument Over Boy

A large police presence was called to a school in the Hill District Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, a large fight broke out inside the University Prep School around 10 a.m.

According to Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh, the fight was the result of a neighborhood rivalry. The victim said she was jumped in the hallway. It escalated to about 30 girls being involved in total and involved screaming, kicking and punches being thrown.

Initially, officials believed the fight started with two girls arguing over a boy.

One girl was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.

9th grader Amina Morris said she was attacked in the hallway.

“I was in the corner, and they started hitting me, so my friends came in,” She said. “This is a school where you gotta fight, you just gotta fight.”

School is located adjacent to one of the traditional tough areas of Pittsburgh. Was created in recent years to serve a small student population (just over 500) from grades 6-12. Even split boys/girls but no other diversity in student body.

Pittsburgh has about 3.5 times population of Wicomico but only about 2 times the student body. This particular school is a partnership between the school district and U of Pittsburgh School of Education which is close by.

Familiar with the general area but numbers in my comment are from wikipedia. Gaines Hawkins may dream about coddling of this sort as educational platform, but student's carry their upbringing to school each day.

Unfortunate, but accurate.

I'm like 7:18, gotta be white kids, "NOT" !! Nice curriculum they're being taught there to by the one girls statement "You got to fight". No child left behind right !

they were fighting because their free prime rib lunch wasn't cooked to their liking that day, and their free breakfast wasn't much better
