Response from Rick Green
First of all, let me say that I attended the council meeting, seated in the front row.
Councilman Kilmer misstated with respect the "hassling" of the CAFO farmer from Hebron. Truth is ALL attendees listened carefully and politely to the gentleman with absolutely NO comments or murmuring at all.
Councilman, please refrain from trying to stir up animosity and division in an effort to further support your position and that of two of your fellow council members who are IN FAVOR OF THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT AND close minded on residential concerns.
We are not anti-chicken farming at all! We are opposed to commercial ventures of the magnitude of the proposed project, owned by people who do not live here (and correction is needed - the family resides in Virginia and is not intending to live on the property).Tyson(Virginia) would provide the birds etc.-truck the mature birds to Virginia for processing-ship the meat overseas leaving our pristine AG land with "FEATHERS AND FECES".
Chicken growers contribute a great deal to the local and state economy and we CHERISH them and all farm operations on the shore. We want to protect them as well against big commercial farm operators while at the same time retaining acceptable air quality levels and the protect the purity of the Paleo Channel.

Kilmer's just another uninformed koolaid gulper. He states- "I'm fine with farmers raising food for the farmers' market, but that type of farming is simply not going to provide the economic activity to our area that poultry farming does. I think that's a reality that most people in Wicomico County understand."
The reason why "that type of farming" is generally not economically feasible is because "that type of" farmer doesn't get all the government entitlements that a contract farmer is entitled to. And then if Kilmer had an ounce of business acumen he would know that more chicken houses means prices paid to contract growers will either remain stagnant or drop and will not "simply" "provide the economic activity to our area" that resident should hope for. It's offensive that he says "I think that's a reality most people in Wicomico County understand". For his information a lot of people are smarter than that and realize more chicken houses are not good for the local economy. The guy's a dunce.
Mr. Green you are a liar. I was there and Mr. Wright was heckled by your people and someone yelled and him and asked him if he was going to buy their houses.
These people would oppose this if it was only 2 chicken houses. They just don't want it done at this location.
There MUST be someone on site to run that operation in the even of a power outage. This means there must be at least one trailer residence available for whomever they hire to be on watch unless there is a residence already there.
Has anyone ever been told the name or the names of the person or persons that are attempting to attain all the government assistance in Maryland for this chicken mega farm?
Are they coming to Maryland because they have gotten all the government assistance they can (maxed out) in Virginia?
I thought if you have a business in Maryland you must have someone in residence responsible for that business.
I will admit that I have been unable to attend the meetings due to health...but I really would like the answers to these questions.
Good point made about the facility only here to serve Virginia and not MD. And, taxes paid from one minimum wage trailer tenant won't begin to cover the costs of all the waste disposal and runoff treatment.
Go to Somerset County and talk to the owner of the Mega chicken farm there and ask him how many federal programs he is entitled to. Ask him if he is taking full advantage of ALL these programs. :)
You might also want to ask him how many other types of businesses he owns that are not in Somerset County.
Once again, the local government puts the cart before the horse, acknowledging that regulations are not all that they should be for mega-chicken farms, yet moving toward approval without the protective regs.
Kilmer will not make it next election. The guy is spends his entire day talking to children at home. I guess he forgot to leave that at home. He really talks down to folks.
