Interim Deputy State Superintendent Comments On Fewer Than Half Of Students Passing Tough New Tests

Fewer than half of Maryland elementary and middle school students can pass tough new standardized tests and school officials are blaming a teaching and testing standards overhaul in recent years.

Dr. Henry Johnson Interim Deputy State Superintendent for teaching & learning spoke to WBAL's Bryan Nehman on yesterday's release of the individual PARCC results for elementary schools in the state.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the results announced Tuesday show that teachers and students haven't adjusted to the higher expectations of the new Partnership for Assessments of Career and College Readiness.

Biggest problem is many teachers aren't educated properly. Unfortunately, their schooling has be dumbed down as well.

No the problem is many parents aren't educated properly. Unfortunately their children have been dumbed down as well.

That's got more to do with it than anything. Poverty has less to do with it, than parental involvement in the child's formal as well as informal education.
