Elks help cover costs of infant heart surgery

While Stephen and Amanda Lowe accepted a check of $1,500 from the Ocean City Elks Lodge in small ceremony on Friday afternoon, the guest of honor was fast asleep in a camo-colored carrier.

When he did wake up, 2-month-old Coleton Lowe was more interested in the people around him than a piece of paper.

But to his parents, the check from the William J. Jernick Memorial Fund – a grant designated for children under 21 who face illness or serious medical conditions – was another symbol of how much the community cared about their son.

“It’s unbelievable all the help we’ve been getting throughout this time,” said Stephen Lowe. “But all the support helps us be with [Coleton] during this time.”

Most of the local Elks lodges have been doing things like this for years with little or no public recognition. It is a real shame that the media would rather focus on stories about how terrible things are instead of stories showing how real people help their neighbors.

Today the Salisbury Elk's Lodge and members of the Boy Scout Troop 817, delivered 125 boxes of food to needy families in Wicomico County. The items included everything needed for a Christmas dinner and breakfast. Toys and blankets were also delivered.

The OC Elks are a special group of people, Elks or otherwise.
