This is true for a lot people-democrats come to mind.
Algebra is more than math because it teaches organization and most importantly logic, both important skills that people use everyday.

I am 65. Academically speaking, the only class I took in high school that benefited me as I went through life - and that I still use today - was typing. Yep - old manual Royal Typewriters with no "correctribbon". Later to be called "keyboarding" and nowdays - who knows what..... I still use it as witnessed by this post.

I learned alot about life in high school and I really enjoyed some of my classes but Alegebra, Geometry, Chemistry, even Latin????? Nah - never did me much good, either.

Think about it though 7:28, all you mentioned taught you thinking skills and more importantly forward thinking skills.
All this is lost in today's US public "education" system, where students are taught "to the test" which only involves memorization. This is why US graduates can't compete esp in the tech fields.

Bring back the basics!! I was shocked too find out that basic math is not being taught anymore (old math), and have been told by more than one math teacher that they don't teach it anymore....we have a business where our grandchildren could not give change, after we worked with them, even their math grades have improved dramatically, we also do not allow them to do a "Wal Mart" and plop the change in the customers hand, they "have to" count it back... a whole new experience for them and all this is an eye opener for us...I also now see them totaling prices in their head and not using a calculator which was also a challenge in the beginning...and Bless the math teachers that keep coming back and "testing" their progress : ))

7:28: A grammar class would have taught you that a comma between good and either was incorrect.

People use Algebra every day and don't even realize it. If you stop and think about some of the more common place things you do daily, you will see where some form of Algebra and/or Geometry comes into play. The three "R"s plus a healthy dose of American history will go a lot further to help us survive than any social acceptance or diversification class ever will. Tom Goslee

Common sense and logic replaced Algebra a long time ago.

Bring on year round school! We are turning out idiots! They are taught to the test, and there is no time to teach real lessons for actual living.

Most people use algebra every day. Going to work - how many miles do you have to drive to work? How fast do you drive? What time do you have to leave for work to get there on time? Running late? How much faster do you have to drive to get there on time? How much overtime do you have to work to pay for the speeding ticket?

All algebra. :)
