(WALDORF, MD) – Maryland State Police is investigating a fatal collision in Charles County after a vehicle fled from a trooper making a traffic stop early this morning.
The male driver is not being identified at this time, pending confirmation of his identity and notification of next of kin. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel from Charles County. His body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
A preliminary investigation conducted by the Maryland State Police CRASH Team, with the assistance of troopers from the LaPlata Barrack, indicates that around 1:00 a.m. this morning, the driver of a 2005 Toyota Scion was traveling northbound on Route 301 in the area of Acton Lane. A trooper assigned to the LaPlata Barrack observed the Toyota traveling with a tag light out.
As the Toyota approached Acton Lane, the trooper activated the emergency equipment on his marked State Police patrol unit. The Toyota refused to stop and proceeded through a steady red signal turning onto Acton Lane. As the vehicle continued westbound, it accelerated to elude the trooper.
The trooper slowed his vehicle to safely clear the intersection losing sight of the Toyota Scion. As he proceeded on Acton Lane, a short distance later, the trooper observed the Toyota on the right roadside just prior to Timberbrook Drive. The Scion struck a utility pole and overturned onto the driver. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
Due to the severity of the crash, the destruction of the utility pole, and the amount of debris, troopers closed Acton Lane for several hours. Charles County Public Works personnel assisted with road closures.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to contact the Maryland State Police LaPlata Barrack at (301) 392-1231. The Charles County States Attorney’s Office has been notified of incident.
A detailed crash investigation will be conducted. The investigation is ongoing.

This result is from his own stupidity, just like attacking a cop and trying to grab his gun, you are going to die! Don't be stupid, obey the law!
Yeah,
That car was a menace to the public, with that tag light out. And if he did stop, he would have been shot (maybe like many of the recently reported events). Unless there's video available, one might want to take their chances outrunning a cop, rather than stop at one in the morning, one-on-one with a "bad" cop. If I had to pull over now-a-days, I would try to make sure it is in range of retail security cameras, so that there is at least a witness to what the cop does.
They will get away with murder, if no one is watching. And we all know how a police force's "internal investigations" turn out.
Again..... Over a tag light. Why even bother? This kid was wrong..he ran. He did it to himself. It one has to wonder how many people would be alive if cops didn't engage over petty crap like a tag light.
He drove off because he had something else in the car, no one is so stupid to drive off unless they got something to hide. Drugs, illegal guns, booze...
Agreed 10:14!!
Petty crap?? It's the law. If you don't like it then get the law changed. The dumbass ran and broke the law again. He was speeding. Broke the law again. Ran off the road, wreckless driving. Broke the law again. When criminals do dumb things they die. It's not my job or cops jobs to allow dummies to do stupid things.
Obviously he was running for more than an tag light and committed for serious offenses while fleeing. BYEBYE dirtbag.
I never said it wasn't his fault. Take one of your pills. And yes its the law. A very stupid law that is there for two reasons..... One to generate money.....the other to engage people. Go fishing! Stfu with your rant. If a cop can't read a tag with his head lights on it then they need not be a cop. What is a tag light hurting? Few criminals and a lot of hard working joes that now have to fix a bulb and go show a cop its fixed or possibly go to court. Cops can write a repair order or a ticket. I mean seriously what's next? Get pulled for distracted driving while singing along with the radio? Missing a hub cap?
We need to go back to the 1970's when cops fired at fleeing cars, then car chases ended real quick when the bullets started flying.
6:31.....that's funny!
Like they STILL don't fire at fleeing cars....????
