Cardin Children’s Dental Health Amendment Included in Senate FY2016 Budget

Amendment 364 establishes deficit-neutral reserve fund to improve oral health care for children and pregnant women under Medicaid

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a longtime advocate for pediatric dental coverage and member of the Senate Finance Health Care Subcommittee, issued the following statement after his amendment relating to pediatric oral health was included in the Fiscal Year 2016 Budget Resolution (S. Con. Res. 11). Amendment 364 establishes a deficit-neutral reserve fund to improve oral health care for children and pregnant women under Medicaid.

“Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease in America. Bacteria associated with early childhood cavities and tooth decay are often passed from a pregnant woman to her unborn child. Despite our best efforts, 80 percent of dental disease in children is concentrated in 25 percent of the population. Children from low income families face inordinately high barriers to receiving needed care. We know that dental disease can harm a child’s performance in school, we know it can cause other health problems, and, sadly, we know it can be deadly. We also know that dental disease is preventable, and that is why I am glad the Senate adopted this amendment.

“The overall budget was a bad deal for the American people, it fell short on the most basic test of fairness and proportionality. While I did not vote for final passage, I am pleased the Senate has gone on record as being supportive of federal programs designed to improve dental health in expecting mothers and children.”

Senator Cardin led the effort in the Senate to ensure that pediatric dental care was an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act. In 2007, Senator Cardin began fighting to ensure all children could access quality dental care after a 12-year old boy from Prince George’s County, Md., died from complications following an impacted tooth that should have been addressed by basic dental coverage.

Sorry, but children's teeth fall out. Instead of making sure they are covered, they should be adding dental coverage to adults medical coverage. It's widely reported that gum disease can cause inflammation issues elsewhere in the body. If you start getting dental problems taken care of, you can probably lessen your chance of other health issues. Therefore saving money on regular medical.

Expectant mothers and kids.
Translation: single welfare (God, I hate to c0al them "mothers" -- they barely fit the most generous of descriptions) women with a brood of kids with all different fathers.
Again, paid for by working citizens who can't afford dental insurance on health insurance policies that THEY actually PAY FOR to insure their OWN families! Liberal goofs see nothing wrong with that picture.
Makes a LOT of sense if you're ON welfare, but is rather depressing for the ones who pay but can't get it for their own children.
If we had only saved $2500 like obama promised.
Do welfare recipients have that $5000 deductible, too, or is that also paid by the already devastated middle class?
MORE politicians figuring out ways to TAKE from productive people and give to people whose entire family hasn't worked in GENERATIONS. And why should they?
Your "leaders" continue to take food right off your plate and all you do is vote for them over and over. Sort of like thanking them for robbing you.
Keep cheering. It's working out GREAT!

Right lmclain. Bill Maher of all people hit on it on another post on this site with liberal political correctness gone too far and this has allowed these slimeball "mothers" to reproduce bastand after bastard with no repercussions from the decent moral society. They and their children need to be looked down upon as the low class trash that they truly are. Public scrutiny and humiliation work.

In order to be "deficit-neutral" either:
a) Another program is cut and the monies used for this or
b) A tax/fee/charge is levied to pay for this.
Neither is mentioned in Ben's release.
Can the Nutria Final Solution & Fairness Act be far behind?

The child who died was named Deamonte Driver. Look his "mother" Alyce up on MD Case Search. Maybe if she weren't so busy being a criminal and sleeping with men who can't pay for the children they are so good at creating she could have afforded dental care. Looks like she's got about 4 Baby Daddies going on.
God took this child for a reason. With "mothers" like this spitting out children they are doomed themselves from the moment they are born to a life of crime and poverty.
I bet if you look the "fathers" up they have extensive criminal records.
This is par for course for these people who have their hands out. Only good at making babies and committing crimes and running around looking for freebies.

Mother's got all kinds of Baby Daddy's going on looks like. Funny how Cardin shifts the blame instead of placing it where it belongs and that is on some skank who after having one child she couldn't afford continued to spit out more she couldn't afford. People like her are nauseating and are not to be pitied. She needs to learn how to keep her pants on instead of dropping them for every loser that gives her a second look. The child died because of her and her bad choices and for no other reason no matter how Cardin tries to lie or spin the situation.
