Another Horse Struck By A Car On Assateague Island National Seashore

Assateague Island National Seashore

Yup. It happened again. On Monday, September 15th, another wild horse was hit by a car on the causeway from the bridge to island. Just after 10pm, a driver witnessed a horse being struck by a small sports car. The sports car left the scene, so the witnessing driver immediately called 911 to report the incident. According to the witness, after being hit, the horse fell down and then got up and walked away. Based on the witness’ description of the horse, we think that N2BHS-CK (Johnny’s Star) was struck.

After the incident, the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene searched the area and could not find any injured horses. On Tuesday morning, we accounted for and assessed the health of all of the horses in the area. All horses were accounted for and none appeared to be injured. Johnny’s Star [middle] was spotted grazing on the marsh with N2BHSX (Jester) [left] and her dam, N2BHS-C (April Star) [right]. There appeared to be nothing physically wrong with Johnny’s Star. We will continue to monitor all of the horses in the area to watch for any signs of injury.

Drivers – you must be alert at all times when driving on the island and especially around wild horses! This is the third wild horse/vehicle collision this year; we’ve been lucky that no horses were killed. However, since 1982, 29 horses have been killed by vehicles. Help us ensure that this number never climbs to 30. Please do your part by obeying all posted speed limits and driving SLOWER than the posted speed limit when approaching horses in or on the side of the road.

they should build a parking lot on the west side of the bay and make people walk or have a shuttle to take people onto the island. time has proven that people have no respect for this wonderful place.

4:27 PM: That IS government property that they are on, and the horses are government property. "Government intrusion,"
my foot! Telling a property owner they can't protect their property with cameras is asinine. You're the idiot.

You TWO are the idiots. The government owns no land. It is all ours you imbeciles. Stop giving our rights away. Just go sit on your tailgate of your 4x4 and drink another beer. Leave decisions to the adults.

The government owns it. Bought and paid for from the CITIZENS that USED to own it. Check the taxpayer records and see who OWNS it, you fool. If you think it is "yours", try to build a house on it. Geesh, what an imbecile.

3:13: You are apparently too thick to get the point. All you are is a name caller. To think the government owns no land is just ignorant. The government is the biggest land owner in the country. They own it, they control it, and they tell YOU what to do on it, and whether you can be on it, or not. You are correct about one thing though. I do have a 4X4, and it probably cost more than your last 3-4 cars put together. Its really nice. You should get one.

People just do not pay attention. There is just to much distracted driving. When people are there they are looking around and not paying attention to the road. Im just glad this horse was not injured.
