Pedestrian Accidents Declined in Baltimore After Speed Cameras Turned Off

When Baltimore shut down their speed camera program after the discovery of widespread errors including speeding tickets issued to stationary vehicles, some worried that traffic safety in school zones would be harmed by the move. However accident data from the city did not support that this has happened. According to the Baltimore Sun:

"According to Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration data, no pedestrians were injured by vehicles in city school zones in 2012 or 2013. In 2012, Baltimore had 83 speed cameras monitoring motorists and generating millions of dollars in revenue. In 2013, Baltimore's speed cameras were turned off for all but about three weeks. They have not been turned on since.

Citywide, 261 pedestrians under age 18 were injured by vehicles, with one killed, when the cameras were running in 2012. In 2013, with the cameras off, 221 young pedestrians were injured and none killed.

Adrienne Barnes, a spokeswoman for Baltimore's Department of Transportation, called the statistics a "positive development" that shows the agency is improving safety."

Why?

Since this is a known fact then someone should demand these "For Profit" speed traps ran by the City of Salisbury should be taken out of service.

If a child gets hurt in those speed zones then it is because of their own stupidity.

Just propaganda to remove speed cameras.
Similar to "it's for the children".
Besides that , this is piss poor news , nothing else to write about.

I agree. It was a perfect article that makes a lot of sense. Get rid of those damn speed traps that are nothing but a nuisance.

I bet he drives a Prius Hybrid and voted of Obama.

Data is insignificant to directly relate the change in pedestrian related accidents to on/off status of speed cameras. The signs haven't been removed from the areas, the boxes are still there - what's the variable that accounts for the drop in incidents?

To all,

In Salisbury, there was not significant number of pedestrian accidents in these areas BEFORE the money boxes were installed, and that condition has continued since; except for the incident that did happen AFTER we had cameras installed for a year.

They are nothing but another tax on our visitors.

How many of the pedestrians hurt in Salisbury were the fault of the driver? Speed camera or not you can't make people use a crosswalk and stop them from running across the road in front of you. I have watched people fly down route 50 Westbound from Beaglin Park til the speed cameras. They all slow down at the camera and speed up directly after them.
