Made Change to Comcast Internet Service Yesterday - My ISP Speed Is Now 12 times Faster

Hi Joe

After being frustrated with Comcast for months - I finally decided to schedule a Comcast technician for a site visit to determine where the bottleneck was happening as I informed them that I was about to go public on SBYnews. My previous internet speed would start at about 27-30 Mbps - and fall down to around 9-10 Mbps within just a few days each time Comcast would do a remote modem reset. It appears that the older Comcast modem - (Ibee - name brand) - was breaking down intermittently - and not allowing my full bandwidth.

So Comcast came out yesterday and they swapped out their older modem and I got their latest newer model combination CISCO modem/router.

So far so good as I have been experiencing blistering internet speed at 124 - 126 Mbps. It's almost as if everything is happening instantly, and, it is 12 times faster than what I had before.

There are quirks however, as the newer modem supports their newer email service operating platform - IMAP - whereas before their older modem supported a (POP3) email platform - which they are now doing a way with. So - the transition hit some snags that required me to employ a Microsoft technician to make the transition - because my Microsoft email stopped working.

Take - look at the speeds I am now getting.

You are always free to purchase their recommended modem and stop paying a rental fee.

They are still a monopoly and its and internet speeds are an embarrassment to the region.

If the shore got better internet access, I'd guarantee that we would see high tech job growth.

Thanks Joe, I am also experiencing similar problems with my internet speed.

They sent out a notice about 3 months ago regarding this. I went to their site, signed in, ordered, and in about a week I had a new modem. (free).

DOCSIS 3.0 came out about a year ago when they sent the letter to upgrade your modem.

Comcast knew that the adverse publicity from Salisbury News would have crippled them. I would have given the customer blast speed to considering the consequences. I have never received internet speed anywhere close to the results that were posted in the link. I think I am going to give them a call too.

This is the first I have heard about this upgrade. I just checked my comcast modem and it is a Ubee and so I will be calling them. Thank you Joe for keeping us posted.

You had an end of life modem and simply got an upgrade...The technology is changing so quickly I get a new modem every two or three years.

12:07 Poster that said SBYNEWS would have been adverse publicity

My response: I would have given the customer unlimited band width to as Comcast decided they did not want to get on the bad side of the areas largest main stream media.

Your cable modem and Comcast's email services are not related at all. If anything, they set you up with a new class of account which put you on a new email system.

My modem has been dropping connnection during the daytime. I always have to reset it when I get home from work.

Comcast doesn't give a rat's behind about us or SBYnews.

Yeah your email has nothing to do with your modem. Also microsoft will almost never set up your email. most of the time its scam companies from India that pretend to be any company your asking for.

They will offer you support for a fee but then steel your credit card number later and at times install malware into your PC if you allow them remote access.

As an example if you google "Microsoft Support" the first three results are scam companies that will make you think your talking to Microsoft.

Bottom line your email will never ever change just by replacing you modem. The modem just brings the internet into your home but it has absolutely no effect on any of the content that is on the web. This Includes email.

I real hope you were talking to the real Microsoft otherwise I would consider replacing what ever card you paid them with.

Depends on how he has his email set up. They might have it set up using outlook and it's grabbing his comcast email. Some still do that. That would be the reason they have to change the preference from a pop3 email to imap

4:26 - you need to go back to school.
4:33 Poster is correct, he probably had his email set-up using Outlook(Pop3) and Comcast new email platform is Imap - so the incoming/outgoing preferences change to Imap format. This can be really tricky trying to make the transition as there are thousands & thousands of people who are not upgrading from Microsoft Office 2003 - (Pop3 format)

Another thing 4:26 - FYI Outlook 2003 has a lifetime license whereas the newer versions of Microsoft Office have an annual fee for their newer versions -(ie. Microsoft 360, Microsoft 2013 etc.). For the consumer - Microsoft's newer versions are a money pit. At least until another competing rival comes along equipped with a better mouse trap.
What Microsoft doesn't want people to know is that the older 2003 Outlook can be reconfigured to look like the modern day Office 2013, and the email essentially works the same.

To 6:27 - Wait til enough people start using Windows 8. They'll soon wish they had their older Window 7's back especially when they try to open multiple windows and try to tag them for easy access.

Windows 8 was a let-down for me as was the newer versions of Microsoft Office suites. No matter what version of Microsoft Office you have, whether or not it is the newer or older - they all do essentially the same thing. I also have the older Microsoft 2003 (unlimited machine license) - and use it everyday. Eventually I figure I will have to make the transition - but not today.

Maybe by the time I get around to upgrading, possibly there will be another good operating system like RED HAT. Until then I will just try and keep milking my Office Outlook 2003.
