U.S. chicken farmers latest caught in Russia sanction crosshairs

(Reuters) - Russia's threatened ban on U.S. poultry imports, the latest move in a sanctions skirmish over Moscow's support of rebels in Ukraine, has agriculture companies alert to the risks of a conflict that's already roiled trading of crops ranging from soy, beef and fruit to California pistachios.

Moscow has struck back against trade sanctions following the downing of a Malaysian jetliner last month by imposing food restrictions, and would add U.S. chickens to Ukrainian soy and other products Russia has blocked since it seized Crimea earlier this year: Australian beef, Latvian and Lithuanian pork, Moldovan fruit and Ukrainian juice.

Sanderson Farms Inc, the third-largest poultry producer in the U.S., is among American agricultural companies preparing to respond if Russia carries out plans, reported in Russian media this week, to restrict imports of U.S. poultry.

Russia is "using foreign trade as a political football" by threatening to limit poultry imports, Sanderson's Chief Financial Officer Mike Cockrell said. The Mississippi-based company is lining up other buyers for its chicken in case Moscow imposes a ban.

"We'd be crazy not to be making calls to alternative markets right now," he said.

I wish the United States would sanction ALL food products from China. They hate use, the drywall they sent proves it. ALL China food products are the lowest of the low and what they have intentionally put in them, only they know. I'd like to see a complete ban on ALL imports from China and many other countries. It's the only way $$$ will start investing in the U.S. workforce. ALL politicians have sold the American public out. They're traitors, period!

I agree with you 5:35.
On this sanctions issue, we won't win this battle. President Putin will throw it right back at us and American businesses will suffer. Russians are way too resourceful. They will raise and process their own chickens on a scale like we've not ever seen before causing US exports to suffer infinitely, making a fool once again out of obama.

I, 5:35pm, was aware that the story was on Russia, but Communist China is by far, the biggest threat to America's well being, it's citizens and our economy. They are single handedly destroying America and ALL our politicians are helping them in every way they can find to help. Politicians easily know that tariffs on imports or the outright ban on selected imports could turn our economy around quickly and open the job market right back up, but the do nothing traitors only give self serving Obama type lip service = b.s.economics. They've sold us/America out to the EU. The majority of our politicians are Not So American traitors. They want money and power at anyones expense, including the country they were elected to represent and serve. Dollars and power is their mantra.
